Perry <padams49@id.net> asked for a search for the George SAYLES family in Oneida, before the 1830's. The 1790 Census shows three families with the SAYLES spelling, all in Stillwater, Albany County; p.50. (Oneida County did not exist at this time.) Ezekiah 1 free white male 16 and older, 4 fwm under 16, 7 free white females Silvanus 1 fwm 16 and up, 3 fwm under 16, 4 fwf Stephen 1 fwm 16 and up, 2 fwf There are also two with the spelling SALES. Ahab 2 fwm 16 and up, 1 fwm under 16, 3 fwf Mordican 1 fwm 16 and up, 5 fwm under 16, 6 fwf ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1800: p. 175 Oneida County (no towns named) SAYLES, Darius 1 free white male under 10; 2 fwm 10 to under 16; 1 fwm 26 to under 45; 1 fwm 45 and older; 3 free white females under 10; 1 fwf 10-under 16; 1 fwf 26 to under 45. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1810: As a note, I HATE this census! Oneida County's powers that were, tidied everything..... no towns listed, and only the first initial of the heads of household. Not the whole state did this. Oneida is "special". I am trying to obtain a privately done census, which lists full names, but until then, the listings are for C, D, D, G, T, W More by the end of this coming week. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1820: The only listings are for Samuel and William; not George's father, George Sr. Is it possible that your family is in the city of Oneida in Madison County? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1830: The only listings are for Catherine and for Welcome. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sorry this isn't more help. Please tell me if you wish the listings for any of these folks before checking out Madison County. Hi folks...from an extremely wet North Carolina. Is there any type of business directory, or registry of Rome and Utica between 1855 - 1860, something hopefully just short of a CENSUS record ? Trying to locate any: OHNMACHT / OHMACHT There is an Elisabeth, Daniel, and Christian (Christover)sic Ohnmacht listed in the 1860 census in Oneida County. My gg-grandfather Leo Ohnmacht got off the boat in 1854 in NY. Where he was between 1854 - 1859 is a mystery, but he eventually settled in NE PA (Jermyn,Archbald,Carbondale area) in 1860. In 1869 and 1877 respectively, 2 of his sons were born in NY State (according to PA census records). My question is...why would they travel to NY for the birth of those children unless they had relatives there ? It seems a long way to travel in those days. If anyone knows how to tackle this problem, please let me know what you would do. I'm stumped. Thanks..... <rfinn119@idt.net> requested a search for FINN in Utica from census data 1830-1900. Try the NYGENWEB site accessible thru Rootsweb.com and go to Oneida county site. They have a list of cemetaries, addresses, etc for the county and which ones have been transcribed and put on the net. Other than that, I guess you would have to call , or write each cemetary to go over their list of interments. Hope this helps. Dave

Hello, I have a Hand family Bible that goes back to Seth Hand and his wife Irene or Irena. Their children were born in either Utica or Whitestown, but I don't know where Seth was born. His wife was from Litchfield in Herkimer County, born 1810, but I have no surname for her. Their children were Thaddeus b.1829, Ira W. b.1831, Charles F. b1835, and W.H.H. Hand b.1840. Thaddeus and Charles stayed in the Utica area, W.H.H. moved to Little Falls in Herkimer County, and Ira went to Illinois and later to Minnesota. If anyone has any information on this family I would appreciate a reply. Jane
