I have found reference to an Oneida Academy later being called the Oneida Institute located in Whitesboro, for the preparation of poor young men in the ministry and was started by George Washington Gale around the early 1800's. This was later called the Whitestown Seminary. This was a church-backed school, established by the Presbyterians in 1827. The Free- will Baptists took over in the mid 1840's, closing in the 1880's. Ken: I checked the book - "First 50 years of Cazenovia Seminary, 1825-1875" for information on a Prof. W.W. Roller (and Edith Ballou, tou!) but I found nothing. Nothing in the general histories, decade-by-decade histories (1845-1875), nothing in the Trustees and teachers lists, nothing in the students list. Perhaps he was at another "Oneida Seminary" and not the "Oneida Conference Seminary" in Cazenovia. May he have been a bit later than 1875. Does anyone know what happens when old photo studios closed? I have a picture of my great-grandmother that was taken by Finch Studios, 14 Albany Street, Utica circa 1908 and I'm just curious about where any negatives would be (did they have negatives then???). Thanks. Wendy, you might contact the Oneida County Historical Society on Gennessee st in Utica and see if they have any records on the Finch co. As it was probably a privately owned studio, almost anything could have happened to the company records. They may have used Glass plate photography back in 1908, so there may not be a negative record, as we know it. I think that grew from Eastman-Kodak's Brownies and other early cameras that were used by the general public. We have an old photo of my wife's ggm taken by another Utica studio , probably around 1880, and knew it was active for many years. There maybe some photography club in the area that might know, or other old photo collectors, antique shops and the like. The Utica library could have some information, also. There is one famous story of many of Civil War's Matthew Brady's glass plates ending up being used in a greenhouse , but were recognized and many restored to give priceless images. Many cities have studios that do great copying of old photos,if that is what you are after. We had several done here in Kalamazoo of my wife's ggm and sent them to other relative's . Research on the history and methods of photography would help you, also. Good luck . Dave Rafferty
Does anyone have access to the Annals oand Recollections of Oneida Co. by Pomroy James, published Rome, NY, 1851? Roberta
Hi List, I would like some suggestions as to where to go next. I have been researching my Great-Grandfather, William Frank PRIMMAR. I just got his death certificate, but it lists his parents as "unknown". I have two conflicting documents listing his place of birth. My grandfather (his son) Ernest James PRIMMAR's birth certificate lists WF's place of birth as Solsville in 1858. WF's death certificate (which, incidentally, was filled out by Ernest James) states that his place of birth was Oriskany Falls, 1857. I do know that according to the 1920 census, that the William F. PRIMMAR family was living in Oriskany Falls at that point in time. William F. also worked for the Hathaway and Reynolds Co. (according to death certificate). My problem now is "where next?" I have tried my various aunts and uncles and my dad, but none of them know ANYTHING. My father vaguely remembers something about a question of William F.'s citizenship, but my sources say he was born in the U.S. (according to 1920 census, his mother was born in England). Hello: Don't know if this will help, but I knew a Ralph Carey from Oneida / Oneida Castle area. He passed away sometime in the 1980's I think. He had a daughter named Olive (aka Skip) that was the mother of one of my cousins. If you think I can help, please let me know. I am interested in information on my RICHARDSON/CAREY ancestors. My great-grandfather, WESLEY CAREY, had three half-sisters, HATTIE, FANNIE, and SARAH CAREY. Hello Oneida Co Researcher's~ I am looking for ties to my ggg grandfather. James SARGENT(SERGEANT) I know very little about him. I know he was probably born in Schoharie or Chenango Co, NY in 1802. He grew up in Butternuts Otsego Co, NY just barely across the Unadilla River from South New Berlin, Chenango Co. In between his birth and his marriage he had to have spent some time in Oneida Co, in the Camden/Florence/Tabourg. in Oneida Co area as he met my ggg grandmother here in Oneida Co. Her name was Fanny HALE, daughter of Daniel HALE and Polly BARTLETT. She was b. 1805, but her father does not show up in Oneida Co in Camden Township until the 1820 census. I don't know if the Sargent's had family and friends there and that is where James met her or what? The thing is they next appear to be living in S. New Berlin, Chenango Co in the 1830 and 40 census's. I have found 4 of their young children's gravestones at the Riverside Cemetery in South New Berlin in Chenango Co. By 1846, They (according to my gg grandfather's obit) left NYS by means of the 5 great Lake waterways and landed in Milwaukee Port in the Early Spring of 1846. They then went overland by oxcart to Jefferson Co, WI where they settled, and raised their 5 children. Many of the descendant's(like myself) still remain in the SE area of WI. Some migrated North and south. It has been my knowledge in my research to note that when a family went west by ship or boat(Great Lakes waterways) They were many pioneers that went together..Did any other families out there go west about this time from NY?
