Gee, and all I wanted to do was let it be known that there was a place in Oneida Co. called Stueben. All the mail, whew... But it has been fun! Norma
Thanks for the insight. Must be fun to try and keep up with the district changes! Same thing happens everywhere, just different terms. Dave
After seeing your message, I took out my Adirondack Region NYS map. There I find a little square black mark southeast of Boonville labeled: "Steuben Memorial". Apparently, something of importance happened there. It is about 2 miles southwest of Alder Creek, and about 5 miles southwest of Forestport. While we are discussing that part of the country, from Boonville one can go to OLD FORGE, NY. There I had an old scenic railroad ride this summer. Also took a boat ride on the EIGHT lakes in the area. The history told on the the boat ride was incredible. Also went to the Adirondack Museum, where was displayed the history of the region. Unforgettable logging film with story. If anyone ever gets to that area, you need to plan on at least two days, three would be better. I had one full day at the museum. -----Original Message----- From: MissNH37@aol.com <MissNH37@aol.com> To: NYONEIDA-L@rootsweb.com <NYONEIDA-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, December 12, 1999 4:03 PM Subject: Fwd: [NYONEIDA-L] DUNN, William > >--part1_0.a73aee93.25858f7d_boundary >Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > >There is a Stueben, in Oneida Co., NY. and they change the rules all the time.. There use to be a TOWN of Rome and then the City within Now I think it's all the City of Rome with an inner tax district (city) and an outer tax district (what was the town outside the city) but all identified as the City of Rome. There is a STEUBEN COUNTY in New York State which is south of Rochester bordering Pennsylvania. I looked around the Rome area on the map and cannot find anything similar to Stuben. There is a STANWIX just outside Rome. I had an ancester who died at Trenton, Oneida County, NY. However, today the town name is Barneveld with Trenton written in parenthesis underneath. This definition about a "Town" is a basic item that all of us Midwesterners need to learn when we do genealogy. I remember going to Rome when young, and coming upon the "Town of Rome" sign miles from the town. It was very confusing to me until my mom explained the difference. We were then from Ohio where "Town" means a small city. It's just one little example of linguistic differences currently existing in our country. That's also why we need to try to make sure we are interpreting documents correctly by using definitions that were common during the time period when the document was written. Florence & Michele There is a Township of Steuben in Oneida County. It's bordered by Western, Floyd, Trenton, Remsen, and Boonville. There are no "towns" or "villages" within the township nor any postoffices. The village of Barneveld is in the town of Trenton. It used to be called Trenton but that name caused too many mail problems with Trenton New Jersey so it was changed back to it's original name, which originally was Oldenbarneveld, from it's Dutch originators. I see the "town" of Stueban outlined adjoining Remsen , to the West, NE a few miles from Rome. I am from Michigan and we would call the "town of Stueben", a township, encompassing a geographical area which may contain no notable towns or cities, in some cases. It is a self-governing unit in Michigan. I do see a notation of a North Stueben, and the state von Stueben memorail historical site, a Steuben Corners, STueben Valley, but no evidence of andy organized settlement. Dave
You will find Steuben just outside of Remsen , NY and the area is well marked with signs to a Steuben Monument. Remsen is just north of Barneveld (Trenton) on Rte 28 North of Utica. Spent a lot of time as a boy in the Remsen area. Beautiful and friendly. Good luck.

Still having trouble finding info on parents of Peter Morrison (b. 1853, Hannibal, Oswego Co., NY) of Boonville/Forestport area. What info I do have states that his father's name was also Peter and his mother was a Marinda Powell. They were listed in the 1855 Granby, Oswego Co., NY state census as being born in St. Lawerence Co., NY. That is the only place that I have been able to find them. Peter Jr.'s marriage to Leanora Kingsbury is in the town record at Forestport, NY and it confirms that the younger Peter was born in Hannibal, Oswego Co., NY. Peter Jr. and two brothers George and Daniel are listed in the Boonville/Forestport, Oneida Co. censuses for the years 1900-1920. There is no other trace in any of the Federal censuses for their folks. My grandmother told both my mother and my aunt that her (my granny's) grandmother was a Mohawk (?) Indian. I have done a very small research into the St Regis reservation. Does anyone know if there are Powell Native Americans? Could Peter have lived on the reservation with his wife? Is this permissable? Is that why I can't find them but in one census report. Someone please help me! Thanks. Also, if you have info on Peter Jr, his wife, Leanora Kingsbury, or his brothers, George or Daniel that would be of great interest as well. Norma
Found this in http://www.CyndisList.com. Dave, My Wheelers arrived in Camden, Oneida, NY sometime between 1798 and 1817. Isaac WHEELER fathered a son named Daniel on 29 September 1798 in Camden, MA, then moved through Greene Co., NY and was in Camden for sure in 1817 when he purchased some land. Land records show him there past 1850. His other children were Charles, Samuel, Isaac, Jr., Joseph, Occamen, Russell & Betsey. In 1831, he was married to Letitia, but I don't know if this is his first or second wife. My grandfather always said his people came over on the Mayflower but I haven't been able to get back far enough to make this connection. I know others must be descended from this family and hope they may have something to share. My gggrandfather, Daniel, married Sophronia BRYAN and moved to Warren Co., PA in 1833. JAMES PARKER of Westmoreland married MARY PRATT of Whitestown July 9, 1854. I obtained this information from the Family Bible section of the Oneida County Web Page. I believe Mary Pratt is the sister of my great great great grandfather. However, I need to prove that. If she is her father would be MASON PRATT. If any one has any information on this, please let me know.
I am searching for any information regarding Thomas JAMES Sr. & wife Phebe JAMES who came from Wales to oneida county in 1841 and settled in the Floyd area ... Their children were John E. JAMES born in 1819 who ended up in Utica as a photographer from 1867 - 1881, William E. JAMES born 1835 who also became a photographer in the brooklyn area, Thomas JAMESJr. born 1829 who became a farmer in the Floyd area (marrying Mary EVANS) and 2 daughters who I don't have much information on. Given names: Joseph, Sam, Joan, Charlotte, Salome, who are all children of Daniel WHEELER (b. 29 Sep 1798 in Camden, MA) and Sophronia BRYAN. Also Isaac WHEELER (father of the above Daniel) whose children were Daniel, Charles, Samuel, Isaac, Joseph, Occamen, Russell & Betsey. Isaac was married to a woman named Letitia in 1831, but I am not certain this was the mother of his children. She may have been his second wife. Any insight would help.
