I have read that the graves from Delta cemetery were removed to a high point on the northwest short of Delta Lake before the town was flooded. In what town would this cemetery now be? Does anyone know the name of it and if it has been transcribed? I am sure that some of my Smith ancestors are buried there. I am specifically looking for the grave of Israel Smith.
Valentine Hanicker, HerrNecker, Harrneckar, (you get the picture) m Mary Beurlein about 1856, possibly Oneida Co. Mary died by 1861 when Val married wife #3 and produced another family. Valentine arrived in NY about 1851 with several sons from his first wife, presumed already dead since she did not make the trip. Looking for information as to wedding and death records for Valentine and Mary. He is buried at Churchville, but she is not, according to their records. This pair had one child that lived to maturity, Sarah. Have found 21 ways to spell his last name in Civil War records of boys by first wife, so it is very difficult to search. It almost appears that with each wife, Valentine changed spelling of name.. His seachest says HerrNeckar His tombstone says Harrnacker Sarah's vital records say Hanicker After three trips to Rome, and lots of $11 checks to the state, and no luck finding out about Mary, I am desperate for help. Dear List members, I am Audrey C. BOWNE's son, Gregory. I am helping her genealogy, by using my internet service for her to do research. I thought I'd start a bit of genealogical research. A long time ago a family friend related to me that I should study the genealogy of the surname Johnson who are related to Smith, he had no interest in doing the genealogy himself, but thought I might be interested in doing it for him. Though I am not a decendant of these two surnames, I have begun my official research into the links between these two surnames. I am also doing the research of: JOHNSON, HATFIELD, MCCOY and SWENSON. I would like advice on where (what counties and states) to begin my research. Gregory Bowne Seattle,WA

I have several Palmers from the Utica area, but very few dates. If any of the following names are familiar to anyone, I hope they will contact me. Joseph Palmer-probably born around 1800. Died in Yorkville. He had 4 sons: William-probably born in the 1820's Clarence Claude Albert Claude & Clarence moved to Chicago William married Catherine Homer, daughter of Samuel Homer. They had at least four daughters Kate Anna Malinda b. 1846 in New York Mills Imogene b.1848 in Utica I have been told that my grandmother was very proud of her Palmer connection. Whether that was because they settled so early in the Utica area, were a branch of an original American family, were famous for some reason in the Utica area, or were just really nice people, I don't know.
In a message dated 00-01-12 18:07:25 EST, you write: << Does anyone know if there was some catastrophic situation occurring in Oneida Co between 1840 and 1850 that might have resulted in these children leaving NY for WI (the oldest was 22 in 1850). >> Hi Colleen, I doubt there was some catastrophic situation in Oneida County during those year, but I could be wrong. What probably happened was that the government probably purchased large amounts of land from the Indians out west and openned it up to homesteaders. Free land, if you stay so long enough to work it. You may find something on your family in early histories of WI towns were they settled. I have one BUTLER family that I had found a lot of information on the family from 1630 to about 1800 in CT, then they moved to upstate NY and were almost invisible until about 1840 when they moved to OHIO. The Ohio county history book gives a great biography of the family and the in-law families. It takes them back 3 generations and ties me into what I have documented in CT. The children grow up in NY, married there, etc, then moved onto Ohio to homestead on free farmland. The head of the household was a blacksmith and carriage maker. I quess those skills were in demand in new towns and the children probably help with the newly aquired land. The surname Button could have been mis-read by the census index makers in the years you can not find them. You may find them under Butter or Butler, Butten, Buten, Buton, etc. in the indexes. I know I have found BUTTENs in the index that actually were some of my BUTLER family. The person making the index didn't know the family and took their best guess at reading the old script handwriting. Good luck with your search. Dave in PA
Dear Listmembers, I am researching the surname BOWNE and allied families from 1600 to present in the USA, CANADA, and ENGLAND. The ONLY alternative spelling is BOWN . Surnames that are NOT accepted are: BROWNE, BROWN, and BOWEN. Here are the allied family surnames. These families with these surnames should be found to be married to the BOWNE surname. Colleen Can't help you with your brick wall but have an opinion on the exodus from Floyd. Floyd was settled in large part by New Englanders migrating here after the Rev. As most of the settlers seem to have been farmers and the town is not the best farming area due to clayey soil and topographical conditions, expansion of the family farm would have been severely restricted. I would assume that as the children (those born between 1800 and 1830 or so) married, they would have to migrate west to find cheaper, more abundant lands. My ancestors came from Conn. and Mass. to Floyd and a lot of the next generation moved west to Ill., Michigan, Minnesota etc. between 1840 and 1880. I still have my brick wall and need any assistance I can get. My 3rd great grandfather was Riley Button. Riley is listed in the 1830 census living in Floyd and is listed in the 1840 census living in Marcey. He does not appear anywhere after the 1840 census that I can find. I have found three sons and a daughter living in Walworth Co., WI on the 1860 census. I have also learned that these children came to WI in 1850. If you have some time and want a real treat, check this out. Panoramic maps of various cities and towns of the US, including Utica and Camden, NY,can be found by starting at the following Library of Congress site: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/pmhtml/panhome.html This site allows one to zoom in on specific areas of each map and to view them in great detail, sometimes down to individual houses. I just spent quite a while exploring the streets of Utica as they probably looked more than a century ago. Joanne Garland
Hello List... Question...Does anybody know of a very early newspaper from the Rome area called the Columbia Patriotic Gazette? This paper was apparently published on a weekly basis from 1799-1803. There is suppose to be a microfilm in the Jervis Library. Would there be any vitals in this publication? Thank you, Erwin Kirby of Grants Pass, Oregon.
