Hi, Does anyone have any information on NICHOLAS GROAT (Niclaas Grad) listed in the 1800 Census in Onedia Cty. He moved there from Columbia County some time after 1781. He died in Western (I think) sometime between 1814 and 1824. His wife was Marie Weiler (Marytje Wiler). What were their children's names. Are they related to John and Phillip also in the 1800 census. Why aren't they in the 1810 census. Did any relatives stay in Onedia County? Thanks Janet

I checked the 1850 and 1860 Census Indexes for these two names. No Boucher is listed in Oneida Co. in either year. No MacRae is listed in Oneida Co. in either year. (these indexes are not perfect, remember!) I tried some variations on MacRae and had two hits with McRay. Maybe sloppy writing of Utica? There is a city of that name in Oneida county. I think it's a City, but I may be wrong. Hey listers, I can't seem to find anything out about my BROWN family. You would think for such a common name that it wouldn't be too hard, but I think that's making it all the much harder. In referring to the political subdivisions in NY State one should be aware that there is no "township." There is a Town of Lee, for example. In the Town of Lee is Lee Center. Bordering the Town of Lee is the Town of Annsville in which is located the Village of Taberg, e.g. -- G. M. Freeman Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes

For what it's worth, my NY atlas also shows a hamlet called "Marshall" in Allegany County, looks like part of the town of Belfast, and located about five or six miles southwest of the center of Belfast, where Gleason Road becomes Punkey Hollow Road, about four miles south of Rushford Lake. He would not have given the wrong information. When the census takers wrote down names they often spelled them the way they sounded. Not necessarily how they should have been spelled. Also when the names were copied from the census by individuals and written up in the index, the person reading the census may not have been able to read the census takers hand writing. Those old styles of writing can be pretty tricky. A C could possible be mistaken for a G, etc. That is why it pays to look for other spellings when you can't find the one you are looking for. Oneida is the county and Lee was (maybe still is) a town in Oneida county. I will take a look at all of the possibles I can think of for Cray and Hicks in Oneida County. I will get back to you with that information by Friday. In the mean time if you have any other questions I will try to answer them. Julie

Julie, How close are the two counties..Lee and Oneida and I wonder if the G in Gray should have been a C. I don't know why he would have put down the wrong information. Of the 194 Evans in Oneida Co., NY 1850 census index, only four lived in Rome in 1850 Ann, Catherine, David and Eran (this may well be Evan). None in Lee or Delta In 1860 there were the following Evans in Rome: David Evan Hugh Hugh Jane John John John H. Mary Owen Thomas L. William M. 1860 in Lee Owen Evans no Evans in Delta These indexes are not perfect. I have access to the 1850 Oneida Co. census but not the 1860. will do a lookup for you if you think any of these Evans may be yours.
