Verona was/is a small hamlet on the old Rome/Oneida road now St. Rt. 365. The actual village center is about 1/4 mile south of the main railroad line (the old New York Central) that runs from Albany to Buffalo. I think I have seen on a map a group of houses near the tracks just west of Rt. 31, referred to as "Verona Station". I would assume that a "station" was located there back when trains made stops at every village. Now the area is built up enough so it looks like one continuous village but in the olden days probably would be considered two separate locations. You probably should just search for your ancestors in Verona itself. Wamphe,Miner is listed in Herkimer Co., NY, town of Frankfort page 103. There were also Wample's, Wampole's, Wamport's, Wamsley's. No Wimp's or any variation of Wimp is listed in the NY 1850 Census. There is a Wimple. No Wump's or Womp's or any variation of them in NY. None of these had the first name of Elijah. 1860 index lists an Elijah Wamsley in Richmond Co.,NY town of Middleton page 630. Kathy, Try contacting the Record Room in the ground floor of the Oneida County Courthouse. They have an index of Coroner's Reports. If they go back to 1860 that should give you the date of death, confirmation of the spelling of the name, and perhaps the official cause of death. If it's in the index and you want access to the inquest file, I believe you need to write the Oneida Co. Coroner. I've never had to go that route, but I believe they still consider these records sealed despite their age, so there is no guarantee of success. Dear list members, Does anyone know how I can get info on an accidental death and its followup inquest that occurred on April 23, 1860. There was an item in the Utica Daily Observer (Wednesday evening edition-Vol XIII-#307 which told about the death of an Adolphus Onswald from a falling tree limb as he was cutting down trees at Slayton's Bush in the town of New Hartford on the property of Jotham Gaylord. An inquest was to follow with ? (inkblot) Roberts officiating. There is a possibility that they spelled the name wrong in the paper and that it might be my elusive gggf Baltus Unsel aka Balthazar Unseld. I have seen this surname mispelled many ways. With a German accent it would sound like "O". The time, place and cause of death fit my gggf's death. Can anyone help? As you can see, I am grasping at straws. Thank you. Hello all! I am looking for information on my G-Grandfather, Joseph Mangan. He was born about 1858, supposedly in Utica. Is there a Mangan family listed in the 1850 and/or 1860 County Register? I don't know much about his parents or siblings. Joseph Mangan married Catherine Gaffney (of Westmeath, Ireland) about 1890 (?). They had 5 Children: William MANGAN married Laura PLANTE Julia married Frank SHIELDS Mary married Tom DAILEY Catherine died as a small child Margaret Carolyn b 1898 married James Burns (my grandparents) in 1923. Joseph worked laying the slate sidewalks in Utica, and died (in a Trolly Accident?) when Carolyn was very young .. 1900-1902. Catherine Gaffney emmigrated to the United States and may haved worked in a textile mill before getting married. Her twin brother, William also emigrated, but it's not known if they came over together. According to my parents, aunts and uncles, there were some Gaffney cousins that they went to school with, but don't keep in contact with. The Gaffney families lived in the Utica/Clinton area from 1885-Present ?. After the death of Joseph Mangan, Catherine worked as a practical nurse to raise her children. My father has a pocket watch that was given to her by one of the families she worked for with her name engraved inside the back cover. I don't know the names of her parents or any other siblings, or the family that gave her the watch. I'm looking for any information in the Oneida County census, registers or other documentation that would perhaps give me a clue as to the parents of Joseph MANGAN. I'm also interested from hearing from any Mangan or Gaffney Cousins! Any information would be greatly appreciated and immediately acknowledged! Thank you! Peggy Burns
