Dear Folks, I would like your help please with the children of James Grove Jewett, born in Sangerfield, NY 1/29/1829, died 9/27/1913 in the Village of New Hartford and buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica, NY. Harriet Maria Stillman , his first wife, was born 3/14/1831 in Whitesboro, NY, died 11/16/1899 in Chadwicks, NY and buried in Forest Hill Cemetery. On page 378 of the book, History and Genealogy of the Jewetts of America, James Grove is item number 3907 listed under children of David Langdon Jewett and Anna Kellog. The book, to the best of my knowledge does not mention him further as to descendants, etc. I would like help and advise about locating this information plesae. Does anyone have a newer volume of books, etc that might have Jewett material in them that they would be willing to a lookup for me please? I would apprecaite your help and advise please. Thank you very much. Hope all of you have a nice weekend. Susan :) Harriet Maria Stillman was the daughter of William Stillman and Sarah Stebbins.
Help and advise with my g-g-g-grandmother, Sarah Stebbins, of Oneida County, NY please. Sarah, per her daughters, Betsy Elizabeth Staffords death certificate, was born in Connecticut. I believe she was born in 1796 and died in Kirkland, NY 2/22/1871, she is buried in New Westmoreland Cemetery in Westmoreland, NY She was the second wife of William Stillman who was born in 1777 in Wethersfield, Conn, married Sarah in Deansboro, died in 3/1/1841 in Kirkland and is buried in New Westmoreland Cemetery. They had many children including my g-g-grandmother Betsy Elizabeth born in Clarks Mills, NY in 1813, died 7/11/1894, buried in Deansboro Cemetery and married William Harrsion Stafford. Betsy and William had a son Pernett Myrtle who married Fanny Buckley, whose family also lived around Deansboro. Another daughter, Maria Harriett married James Grove Jewett, he was a prominent businessman in Oneida County, she was his first wife. If anyone knows about Maria and James Jewetts children I would be most interested in that, the Jewett book I have found does not have that information, either does the Jewett group. The family information I have is that Sarah and William Stebbins had 17 children, including the two daughters mentioned above. William Stillmans first wife was Betsy, she is buried in Old Westmoreland Cemetery. I would like to learn more about her parentage, have found Stebbins in the county but have no idea who her parents are, where she was born in Connecticut, if she was born there, her siblings, etc. I can not find the family Bible, if there was one, do not know if it would be Stebbins or Stillman, our part of the family does not have it. Perhaps Stebbins was not always spelled Stebbins, does anyone know how else it could be spelled and what the family history of the name is, etc. I believe that the names Stebbins, Stillman and Stafford, Bailey, VanVetchen, etc were numerous in Oneida County, other branches of our family have come from Connecticut. Thank you all for your help and advise. I appreciate it. If anyone would like family information I will be glad to share it . My e-mail address is MrmrsD4387@aol.com, my name is Susan DeHart. Hope all of you have a nice weekend. Susan :)
Lairdsville is a small hamlet in the Town of Westmoreland, Oneida County, located on State Highway 5. It does have a church and a Fire Department. Phil. Munson
Ethel Irving was born on 31 May 1885 in Lairdsville, Oneida, NY, daughter of William Willis Irving and Nellie Florence Cornish. According to her social security application, in 1936 she lived at 18 Hampden Place, Utica, NY and worked at Sturges, Mfg, Co, Inc., 2020 Sunset Ave, Utica, NY. She married Arthur Shackford June 12, 1906 according to a GenServer posting. I'm looking for others interested in the Irving or Shackford name. I'm also curious - Lairdsville isn't listed on the town listing on the Oneida WEB page and has only nine links when I search under HotBOT. It does have a zip code but is it still a town? You should look in the 1880 Oneida Co Census for this family. The 1880 census is soundexed for households with children under 10yrs. This family should soundexed. The soundex number for Bell would be B400. The soundex makes it easier for you to find exactly what town they were in. (It is a roll of microfilmed cards with the family names, ages, and where they lived at the time of the census.) It saves searching the entire census if you don't know for sure which town they lived in. If you don't know how the soundex works here is a great place for you to start: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/ click on lesson 9 It will tell you all there is to know about census info! (and it's all free!!) It also gives you ideas on where you can access census, places you can order it, etc. I wish you the best and if I can be of any more help please contact me. I have a Millin C. Groat who lives in Oswego County,Ny in the 1850 census. I copied this from the census records so I imagine a while ago so I imagine it could be Milton. His is living with his parents. William A. Groat 55 Farmer born NY Melinda 45 born NY Millin C. Groat 22 (M) born Ma Catharine 16 born NY Sylvia 12 born NY In 1860 there are no Miltons or Millins in the NY state census index. (checked all gro** spelling variations). Willliam appears to have moved from Oswego County in 1860 as well. I have a couple of Martin Groats but they are in Coumbia County from 1830 on. Let me know if you want their info. I 'm perpetually disorganized so I'll keep an eye out for Milton as I go through my notes. Janet
I noticed the surname Groat. Do you have any information on a Milton Groat who married Mary Elizabeth Olcott (1828-) on 3-Jul-1858 (per her father's will) in Lakeport, Madison Co, NY? I have some info on this OLCOTT family and am looking for more.
