    3. Joanne Garland wrote about the changing boundaries of Paris: >These facts might help clarify early census records, especially the 1790 >census, which would have included this area in Herkimer County. But, ... No one but the Oneidas, Tucaroras, Stockbridge, Brothertowns, other communities of Indians, and a few white squatters or traders lived in most of that area until after 1792 or so. Clinton was settled in 1789, and people were starting to trickle into the New Military Tract (Onondaga County, etc.) but the vast Oneida Reservation was still very much intact and the Governor's 20 Towns were not yet sold or settled - leaving nearly all of present Madison County and much of western Oneida County uninhabited by whites. Has anyone ever tried to break down which people on the 1790 census were in what present counties / towns? I'm able to do this with some accuracy with the 1800 census of Cazenovia which covers an area now split into the present townships of Cazenovia, Fenner, Smithfield, Nelson, Sullivan, Stockbridge, Lenox, Lincoln, part of the City of Oneida, and the very northern portion of the Town of DeRuyter in Madison County: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/Census/Cazenovia/1800Cazenovia.html Dan W. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/

    3. MWalt, Yes this area of upstate NY was sparsely populated prior to 1770 but the great influx mostly from Mass. and Conn. began after the rev. The major populations centers then were the future Utica area, Deerfield (just north of Utica) and a few around the area of Fort Stanwix (Rome). Unless your ancestor had Palentine roots you should assume that they migrated here after 1770. 1. [NYONEIDA-L] WETMORE'S of Paris, Ny
    2. Hi, I am trying to find information about the Wetmore family from Paris, NY. Elisha Wetmore b. 1768 Connecticut d. Aug 03, 1846 in Paris, NY Cynthia Guild Wetmore b. 1768 Connecticut d. 1848 ? They had 12 children, i am a descendant of their daughter Cynthia Wetmore b. Sept 1799 Herkimer (Grafenberg, I believe I have the wrong spelling) she married Daniel Driggs Nov 1825 then married Nathan Hatfield Nov 1829 ( My 2nd great grandfather born about 1796), don't know the location of either marriage I have been unable to find any information about Nathan, so I do not know what county he was from, but i know this was also his second marriage, he had two daughters from his first marriage, wife unknown. Nathan also had a brother William Hatfield that married Cynthia's sister Polly Wetmore in 1811 another brother Perkins Hatfield that married another of Cynthia's sisters Rhoda Wetmore in 1817 and a sister Polly Hatfield that married Cynthia's brother Elisha Wetmore in 1815 I have been unable to confirm that all the Hatfield's were siblings, but I know all the Wetmore's were siblings. Nathan and Cynthia moved to Ohio about 1833 I would appreciate any help in locating references for this time period Thank You Jean Rowcliffe ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 1. [NYONEIDA-L] Early boundaries of Paris, NY
    2. Joanne Garland
    3. More on early town boundaries: I was intrigued by the following passage from the 1881 book, History of the Town of Paris by Henry C. Rogers. On page 55, Hon. Lorenzo Rouse writes: "...Paris was originally included in the town of Whitestown, then a part of Herkimer County. In 1792, the town of Paris was organized as a separate town, and included not only Kirkland and Marshall, but also the present towns of Sangerfield, Brookfield, Hamilton, Cazenovia and Sherburne. These five latter towns were taken off in 1795, and Kirkland, including Marshall, in 1827, leaving the town of Paris with nearly its present boundaries, the only change being the addition of a narrow strip from Kirkland, in 1839, to accommodate a few individuals." These facts might help clarify early census records, especially the 1790 census, which would have included this area in Herkimer County. Joanne Garland

    3. A correspondent just sent me the following, which may be useful to some Oneida County researchers: Joanne Garland ...a chronology of the towns...and as >you will see, there were a lot of changes. which means that a census >showing someone in a particular town/city, and then in the next census >showing them in a different town/city..doesn't necessarily mean that >they had moved to a different city/town/village..but rather, that a new >town had been created/ceceded . > Chronology of the Towns >--------------------------------------------------------------------------- - > >1795 Town of Brookfield formed from Town of Paris, Oneida County, > 5 March 1795 >1795 Town of Cazenovia formed from the Towns of Whitesboro and > Paris, Oneida County, 5 March 1795 >1795 Town of Hamilton formed from Town of Paris, Oneida County, > 5 March 1795 >1798 Town of DeRuyter formed from Town of Cazenovia, 15 February > 1798 >1807 Town of Eaton formed from Town of Hamilton, 7 February 1807 >1807 Town of Lebanon formed from Town of Hamilton, 7 February 1807 >1807 Town of Madison formed from Town of Hamilton, 7 February 1807 >1807 Town of Nelson formed from Town of Cazenovia, 13 March 1807 >1807 Town of Smithfield formed from Town of Cazenovia, 13 March 1807 >1809 Town of Lenox formed from Town of Sullivan, 3 March 1809 >1815 Town of Georgetown formed from Town of DeRuyter, 7 April 1815 >1823 Town of Fenner formed from Cazenovia & Smithfield, 22 April 1823 >1836 Town of Stockbridge formed from Towns of Vernon & Augusta, > Oneida County and Smithfield and Lenox, 20 May 1836 >1803 Town of Sullivan formed from Town of Cazenovia, 22 February 1803 >1896 Town of Lincoln formed from Town of Lenox, 18 May 1896 > >Good example would be: >Prior to March 5th 1795, Hamilton, Madison Cty did not exist. >Checking the Plat maps one can see that not only were new >towns created, but county lines were also changed. >SO, that the physical location of part of the Town of Paris, >Oneida County on March 6th 1785 was now..Village of Hamilton, >Madison Cty. >

    2. Thanks, Judy, for the information on the towns in Oneida County; however, I'm more interested in the earlier towns. My ggg grandfather was born in abt 1770. I noticed lately that Whitestown, March 7th, 1788 was named in honor of Judge Hugh White, a first settler, May, 1784. I'm wondering if anyone was in New York in 1770 or is it for sure that my ggg grandfather had to be born in another state and later moved to NY. Does anyone know about this? Thanks for any information you may be able to share to shed some light on this. mwalt28373@aol.com

    3. Rooters: The following is a posting to the newsletter of my local genealogical society and thought it might be of interest to the rest of you. As you know, 99% of the 1890 census was destroyed by fire. There is a project to publish a book listing all U.S. residents living at that time. This information will be furnished by descendants of those people. There is no charge for listing your ancestors and when permission is granted, contributors will be listed with the proper reference to their ancestor entries. Submission deadline is April 2000. The data will be published and sold at cost with copies going to the Library of Congress, Maine State Library, Maine State Historical Society and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Library. For submitting your ancestor's vital stats please use the following format: Head of Household-full name, age, date of birth, place of birth (include town-county-state), sex, race (W=white, C=colored, I=Indian, A=Asian). Spouse-full name, maiden name in ( )'s, age, date of birth, sex, race. Information source-list family Bible, family genealogy book, etc. Notes are optional. Some notes will be added, e.g., 1st or 2nd wife, children by which wife, if they died or got married in 1890 or additional surname spellings. NO TE: person who died before 1890 or was born after 1890 will be omitted from the book. Send your submission via Email to:<chinaDoll2@netscape.net> or mail to Agnela M. Foster, P.O.Box 2551, Waterville, ME 04903. Contributions are most welcome.

    3. Ben, Do you mean the one on West Thomas Street? I'm not familiar with a Thomas road in Lee, and the cemetery on W. Thomas Street is in the City of Rome but i'm not sure of its name. Do you know where in the cemetery the graves are located? Can it wait until spring as we have about 18" of snow on the ground now, hard wading through and if the stones are lying down, might be hard to find. If no one else does it before April email me again and I'll try to get your photos. 3. Hi Everyone, I am new to this list and would like to know if anyone is working on a Wilcox Family who is said to have been living in the Oneida area in 1810. I am looking for the parents of Lucinda Wilcox born May 13, 1810. Her father is said to be a Giles Wilcox, possible married a Johanna. I believe this family may be listed in Cutter's Western New York, VOL. 1 page 90. There I think it said they where from the Oneida Area. Children are listed as: Lucinda, Thomas, Liffit, Wilbur, Daniel and Samuel: Can anyone tell me the time period of this family? Every thing and anything will be greatly appreciated. Thank You for your time and Trouble. Karen krihwan@ncinter.net

    2. Peggy Burns
    3. Hello everyone .. I have received some new information from my father's cousin regarding my Mangan Family .... According to her, my g-grandfather Joseph Mangan was born in 1859 in Clayville, NY. I don't have any details on his parents, but I have names of the following siblings: Margaret Mangan Rockwell Patrick Mangan - married Rose Beck Rose Mangan --- father re-married --- James Mangan (1/2 brother) Julia Mangan (1/2 sister) married SNYDER ? Bill Mangan (1/2 brother) - never married. Joseph died in 1903 at the age of 44. Details surrounding his death are very sketchy - rumuor says he was in a trolly accident in Utica. Do any of the previous names show up in the 1860 census or county directory? I don't know if Joseph was the eldest child or not. Looks like I'll need to take a detour to Clayville next time I head to Utica. Any information will be greatly appreciated and immediately acknowledged. Thank you. Peggy Burns
