    2. Kerry Boehm
    3. Has anyone ever heard of a place called Castle Garden (near Battery Park, NY)? Supposedly it's where immigrants/emigrants came before there was an Ellis Island. If anyone has heard of it, do you know if there is any info on the internet about it? Kerry R. Boehm

    1. Re: [NYONEIDA-L] BEFORE ELLIS ISLAND
    2. Yes, you are right. There is a lot of information on the web about Castle Garden, which I have seen on other lists last year. I would try what ever search engines you have accesss to and type in Castle Garden for the search and you would probably come up with the links. I don't recall what they were anymore. Dave Rafferty

    3. Looking for confirmation that Orrin Kingsley, Jr., who lived in Florence and/or Annsville in early 1800s, served in the War of 1812. Are there any records of Oneida Co. that document service in and/or veterans of War of 1812? The National Archives has no record of him, but his gravestone indicates he was a veteran of the War of 1812. Please respond to me directly, and also to the list if you wish. Thanks. 1. [NYONEIDA-L] Apologies
    2. Linda
    3. Sorry everyone, I received the Pretty Park Trojan Virus and didn't know about it, so of course it attached itself to all my email addresses. I received the following for getting rid of the virus if anyone did happen to open the EXE file that was sent out. Again my apologies Linda Melbourne Australia http://vil.nai.com/villib/alpha.asp Profile Name W32/Pretty.Worm Aliases I-Worm.PrettyPark, Pretty Worm, PrettyPark Variants None Date Added 6/8/99 Information Discovery Date: 5/26/99 Origin: France Length: 37,376 Type: Trojan SubType: worm Risk Assessment: Medium Minimum DAT: 4029 Minimum Engine: 4.0.25 Characteristics This is a worm that infects Windows 9x/NT files. It arrives via email from infected users. It appears as an icon of a character from the animated comedy series "Southpark". Symptoms This program, when run will copy itself to FILES32.VXD in WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. It then modifies the registry key value "command" located in the location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open from "%1" %* to FILES32.VXD "%1" %*. This in essence will cause the FILES32.VXD to run during the execution of any exe file. This worm will try to email itself automatically every 30 minutes to all email addresses listed in the Internet address book. A second function of this worm is that it will also try to connect to an IRC server and join a specific IRC channel. While connected, this worm tries to stay connected by sending information to the IRC server, and will also retrieve any commands from the IRC channel. While on the determined IRC server, the author of this worm could use the connection as a remote access trojan in order to get information such as the computer name, registered owner, registered organization, system root path, and Dial Up Networking username and passwords. Method Of Infection Direct execution of the file "Pretty Park.exe" will install to the local system as mentioned above. Removal Instructions The order to remove this trojan is complicated by the depth to which the trojan hooks the operating system. The following procedure should remove the Trojan. 1) Identify and note the files associated with this trojan as detected by the scanner - do not remove the trojan at this time. If you have already removed the trojan, you will not be able to run REGEDIT steps below on the affected system. Proceed instead to step 11 listed below. 2) Run REGEDIT.EXE 3) Remove references to the trojan from the (Default) key of the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command\ It should read "%1" %* 4) Remove any keys that run the main server executable under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\ and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ 5) Delete the registry key if it exists HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dl 6) Exit Regedit 7) If applicable, edit WIN.INI and remove the reference to the trojan from the run= line in the [windows] section. 8) If applicable, edit SYSTEM.INI and remove the reference to the trojan from the shell= line in the [boot] section. It should just contain the file EXPLORER.EXE. 9) Restart the system. 10) Delete the trojan program(s). If all is well the files should be deleted OK. If you get an error message saying that windows is unable to delete the file because it is in use, then you have made an error in the above procedure. Repeat steps 1 to 9 and try again. 11) In the event that the trojan was deleted before making the registry changes, it is still possible to repair the registry. You will need access to another computer, or at a minimum, access to MS-DOS on the affected system. Using MS-DOS edit, create a file called UNDO.REG with the following content (you can cut and paste): REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command] @="\"%1\" %*" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command] @="\"%1\" %*" 12) Save this file to the Windows folder of the affected system as the file "UNDO.REG". 13) Click on START|RUN and type in UNDO.REG and press ENTER. The contents of UNDO.REG should be now imported to the registry.

Both have progeny still living in and around the Clinton - New Hartford area. I have no "Birge"cousins closer than this line (2nd cousins once removed) and would be very pleased if we have a match somewhere. Would be pleased to pass any info that might help...... There were several williams in Saratoga, but that was not the area you gave me, and I'm not sure how far away that is from your location of interest.Dates, etc. did not come close to any information you gave me, so I discarded that search. There are another 125 persons named William to check out. These all have middle names, with only 3 persons who have a middle name starting with P. and none of those three are named Pebble.I think looking into the next 125 is a waste of time, but I want you to be satisfied, so I'll do what I can, but it may take a few days. I don't know if I suggested this before, but if you contact the town, or city hall in the area in which William Pebble and his wife lived, they may have records on his family and the names of his and her parents. Researching my mother's side of the family, I had very little information, however, when I was able to get the death certificates of her mother and father, I was able to find, in those records, the names of their parents. I then got their death certificates, and was able to trace back one more generation. Unfortunately the next generation back was in Germany, and I have now come to the Brick wall, with very little hope of finding any previous information. I'm sure most of it was destroyed when Germany was practically burned out during the 2nd world war. To make matters worse, the name Tombo is not German, but can't find what it was. It could have been French ( Tombeaux ) perhaps Swiss or Itallian. The only thing we both can do is keep posting the inquiries and asking for info. at different web sites. I'll let you know when I have to call it quits. I like challenges and will try my best, but, the way things presently look, please don't get your hopes up. All the information I post on the web is from a book titled " A Short History of the Slocums, Slocumbs and Slocombs Families 1637-1881" written by Charles Elihu Slocum, M.D., published in 1882. I have an original copy, but it is really falling apart. I took it to a local bookbinder and he electro photostatically copied it and made me a brand new book, with a hardcover and gold lettering. It is just like a brand new book directly from the original publisher. It is not a photcopied book like most stores are selling for a high price. My guy charges about $86.00, plus shipping, and possible Ma. tax. but it is well worth the money. If you are interested in purchasing one, I left a message on the Genforum with his name, address and telephone number. Although the information was copied from my book, I do not get one cent from his sales, so I'm not out trying to sell the book for my benefit. If the William, in Clinton, is your line, I can then take you all the way back to generation # 1. Your William is # 7; Samuel Slocum 6; William 5; Samuel 4; Ebenezer 3; Giles 2; Anthony 1. If it looks like it will be a lot of pages, I will then ask you for your snail mail address and will photocopy the material and mail it to you, AT NO CHARGE, but the information will be in your direct line and will not cover each individual from each family. Let me know what your desires are. Regards, Randy > > HI RANDY, MY COUSIN, I FOUND OUT TODAY HAS OUR SLOCUM FAMILY BIBLE. > SHE IS GOING TO SEND IT TO ME. IT SHOWS WILLIAM PEBBLE SLOCUM M. I cataloged the cemetery a couple of years ago and used the original burial book to suppliment the information. According to the Sunset Hill records William Pebble Slocum was born 23 May 1816 (which is one year off from your date) in Brattleboro, Vermont. He died on 23 Nov 1896. He wife was listed as just Emily so your information helped me to complete the name. Emily was listed as being born on 27 June 1845 in Clinton, New York and died 28 APril 1871. She was listed as being the wife of Edwin A. Hatheway. He was not listed and I do not have him in my database. There is also a women by the name of Nancy who is buried in the Old Clinton Burial ground (the first burial ground in the town) who was born about 1809 and died 17 Jan 1868. She is listed as being the wife of a William Slocum. George is also buried in this cemetery in case you did not know. The dates I have for him are born about 1820 died 30 Oct 1849. His middle name is listed with a W. Did this stand for William? You also mentioned that they had a son Charles. I have a marriage for a Charles C. Slocum in New Hartford NY on 5 Feb 1846 to a Evelina L. Payson. I know this is not the same person but since New Hartford is so close to Kirkland that this may be a relative of theirs. If you have any additional information on this family that you would like to share I would appreciate it. I use the information to update my database only and do not publish the information. I am very interested in families from Clinton since I grew up there. Any additional information you can provide to me I am very interested in. Hope the information I provided you helps you in your search. Kevin --WebTV-Mail-28604-2174--
