Does anyone have information on the Pfluke (Pflugh / Pflug) family in the Rome or Lee Center, NY area?
I recently searched for my ggg uncle, Rev. John J. Toomey, who was the first pastor of St. Agnes Church in Utica. It was the second Catholic church in Utica, started in the early 1880's to accommodate all the Irish. I had a wonderful response from the Utica Historical Society on Gennessee Street in Utica. They provided initial information in response to my inquiry (which did not include any $), and then offered to complete a more in depth search for $15. Pretty reasonable, and great service. Good luck on your hunt. Susan Toomy - Daytona Beach Joanne Garland wrote: > My earlier message in answer to your posting came too soon! Many thanks to > Pat for links provided in today's posting. Sincere thanks to all who replied - much appreciated. Jean Bonnie Scotland
thanx to Dianne and Dan for the specific directions to Glenwood Cemetery. Thanx to all the others for your help. Valerie
Thank you to everyone who responded to my yesterday's query looking for 1850 churches. Your information was so helpful that I've already written a letter to, I hope, the appropriate church. I do have one other question. James O'CONNOR was a druggist when I found him in 1870. Did Utica have City Directories or Business Directories for the period 1850-1859? If so, does anyone happen to have access to them for such a lookup? Even a lookup of Utica 1850 census, if anyone would be so kind, would be helpful as I try to track him back to emigration. I'd be very grateful. Thank you. Jack Hicks Rosetown, Saskatchewan jacjon@sk.sympatico.ca

The church secretary at St. Joseph's might be able to tell you which other churches existed in Utica that early. They will search their own (and St. Patrick's Church) baptismal/marriage records for a modest donation, and they prefer to have your question in writing, giving plenty of information. Other ways to find maiden name of Elizabeth's mother might be: - Elizabeth's death certificate (gives mother's maiden name, if known). - Elizabeth's obituary (often gives mother's maiden name). - Ellen's gravestone, if located near that of James (often uses only maiden name). - Family graves near to Ellen's. - Census records (look for an elderly relative living in the household, or next door!). - City directories (same as above--see other household members). - James' death certificate/obituary (may provide name of his spouse). - Church marriage record for James and Ellen. - Names of witnesses to the marriage. There are many routes around seeming brick walls. Good luck! I'd like to know if the pioneer EASTMAN Cemetery still exists on the old family farm near Marshall, Oneida Co., NY. I'm particularly interested in getting transcriptions or even photographs of some of the stones if they still exist, especially those of my ggggg grandparents, Joseph EASTMAN (1724-1802) and Phebe (HENDRICKS) EASTMAN (1723-1812). Any help greatly appreciated- please excuse cross postings. Steve Frevert
I think you're referring to my response concerning the Nisbet cemetery in the town of Western. Directions: take St. Rt. 365 to Floyd, north on Soule Rd. about 3 miles, turn left on Kotary Road, drive until you get stuck then walk about a mile more. It's over the crest of the hill on the right. It's probably closer if you walk in from South Hill Road but I've never been that way. If you need further, let me know. A teamster is essentially a driver, i.e., a driver of a wagon and its team of horses or mules. (A mule driver is also called a mule skinner). I believe it was someone who "drove" horses. Hi, More info uploaded to my Oneida Co sites: <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njpatrn/index.html">Pat's Genealogy Page</A> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njpatrn/index.html or <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njpatrn/StanfordCemetery.html"> If the Stones Could Talk....</A> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njpatrn/StanfordCemetery.html <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njpatrn/Oneida%20resources.html ">Oneida Co Resources</A> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njpatrn/Oneida%20resources.html Pat
Can anyone tell me what a "teamster" was in the 1860 census (Kirkland, Oneida)? Thanks Jean
The Roman Catholic baptism record for Elizabeth Anna O'CONNOR b. 8 Feb 1852, Utica, NY, to James Charles O'CONNOR and Ellen ____? seems my last resort to find the maiden name of her mother. Utica City Clerk's office does not have birth records for that early. Does anyone know if the courthouse in Rome would have a birth record? Would anyone know if St. Joseph's was the only catholic church in Utica at the time. Would baptism records remain with the church? Would certainly appreciate any clues or suggestions. Jack Hicks Rosetown, Saskatchewan jacjon@sk.sympatico.ca
In the horse and buggy era, a teamster was one that drove mostly larger freight wagons that were pulled by multiple animal teams, horse, mules, etc. It was a job akin to semi drivers today, hence the name "teamsters" for their union. Dave
this cemetery I'm looking for is most likely in the Oneida area, this is where many of our Lowe ancestors hung their hats! This is not the same cemetery as the one in Oneida Castle near the church/park/Castle St. area, is it? Valerie Lowe
To the person who wrote about the cemetery that is about a mile off the road: would you be so kind as to send directions for this cemetery? Would greatly appreciate it. Do you know the name of it?
