    2. Susan Ruggles
    3. I'm looking for info on my gg-grandfather Joseph COCHRAN(E), b. 2 Dec 1820, Brownville, Jefferson Co NY. His father's name was also Joseph, b. Glasgow, Scotland, date unknown. There is a Joseph Cochran is listed in the 1820 census index for Jefferson County. Sometime after that, I'm guessing they moved to Oneida County, as there is a Joseph Cochran listed in the 1840 census index: COCHRAN, Joseph, Oneida County NY, p. 145, Whitestown, ID#NYS4a529997 Joseph Cochrane (b. 1820) married Emeline GAMBIA (b.1824) in New York Mills, Oneida Co NY, on 14 Dec 1842. The family moved to Troy NY in 1846, and on to Milwaukee WI in 1850. Is it possible to do a lookup of the 1840 Federal Census using this ID number and page? What are my chances of finding the marriage record from 1842? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sue Ruggles Milwaukee WI

    1. [NYONEIDA-L] WILLIAM SALTAR and THE MAPPA FAMILY
    2. Has anyone run across these names in their research? William Saltar and his four children came to Utica from New Jersey in early 1800. His wife, Sarah, was in poor health and stayed in New Jersey. A source (Stillwell's Historical and Genealogical Miscellany) said he was with the USBank, but the bank has no such records. The same source said he represented the government in Indian negotiations. I can't find anything else written to that effect. One of his daughters, Mary Walker Saltar, married Asa Bill Sizer, son of Samuel Sizer of Steuben who came to the area representing the Baron. His brother-in-law was Benjamin Walker, who was Baron Steuben's aide, adopted son, and executor of his estate. Two daughters married into the Mappa family and Wm. Saltar lived his last years in the Mappa House with Sophia Mappa, his daughter, and died in 1850 and is buried in the Trenton/Oldenbarnveld cemetery. I am particularly interested in knowing what Wm. Saltar lived before Mappa House and what he did for a living. If anyone knows a descendant of the Mappas, maybe they have some information about our mutual ancestor. Alice Pryor

    1. [NYONEIDA-L] Homesteading
    2. Homesteading laws all applied only to federal lands. New York is a state land state. There were no federal lands in NY for the federal gvt to offer for homesteading. The many settlers who moved into NY after the Revolution bought land from the state or from one of several large land companies who had acquired patent to the lands from the state (ie the Holland Land Company). 1. [NYONEIDA-L] Homesteads
    2. Daniel H. Weiskotten
    3. I've never heard of "homesteading" in NY as people did it in the west. Lands may have been patented or granted for military service, but speculators or the state were busy buying up the land and selling them for profit - not something likely to lead to what we know as homesteading. Homesteading is a federal program on federal lands and since NY is who took al the land from the Indians there isn't much chance of a federal homestead program in the state. In the early 20th century I do beieve there was a program in NY where farms occupied by families for so-many generatiosn could receive a tax break if they met certain criteria based on the history of property ownership - thus farms that were in families for several generatiosn becaem known as "The Smith Homestead" etc. The program / programs in NY may have come about as the result of the federal homestead benefits given farmers in other parts of the country. This could be had even if your family had only owned the property for 50 years, which leads today to many confusing property histories as people assume that the homestead designation means what it does elsewhere and that the family was the original settler and improved the land in exchange for title. Not so in NY. We have "homesteads" in Cazenovia and surrounding towns which were first sold in the 1790s by the Holland Land Company or by Peter Smith, and which went through several hands until the "homsteading family" acquired it in the 1820s or 1830s. I grew up on "The Old Annas Homestead" which had at least three owners before the Annas family bought it in 1813. The well known "Cook Homstead" is a good example of the confusion as people have assumed that the Cook family purchased it in the 1790s, when they only purchased it in about 1815. 1. Re: [NYONEIDA-L] Questions I have
    2. Neal F. Carrier
    3. Well Dan, every book or reference source I have ever read has never referred to "homesteading" or "sharecropping" in NY before or after the Rev. I have copies of land transaction records of my ancestors in Herkimer or Oneida County in the late 1700's/early 1800's and they do not mention "homesteading" but rather the exchange of cold hard cash to the seller, usually a New York City land baron, who bought the land dirt cheap and sold it at inflated prices. Believe me there was no benevolent "share cropping" going on here. Since the federal Homesteading law was inacted in 1862, (refer to http://www.homestead.org/hofaq.htm ) I don't think it would cover this era. But then again, I might not be knowledgeable enough to understand this subject and as you hope someone else will "research this a little more in depth" apparently you aren't either.
