    3. Posted on: Oneida Co. NY Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Oneida?read=671 Surname: SHERIDAN, TRYON, CHAPIN, MOORE ------------------------- I am researching my SHERIDAN ancestors. Many lived in Madison, Oneida and Oswego Counties of New York from before 1820 to 1855. What data I currently have is as follows: Joseph SHERIDAN b. 1754 d. 1823 Place of birth: unknown Place of death: Probably near Lenox, Madison County, New York. Joseph appears in the 1820 Federal census in that location. He also appears in the 1790 Federal census of Exeter, Washington Co., Rhode Island, and the 1800 Federal census of Sterling, Windham Co., Connecticut. The Rhode Island and Connecticut census records indicate a much younger wife (maybe a second wife) and a number of children in the household, older males and younger females. He was probably the father of my ggggrandfather Allen Sheridan. Allen SHERIDAN b. 1778/79 d. 1855 Place of birth: Rhode Island Place of death: probably near Parish, Oswego Co., New York Married: Dorcas, surname unknown, b. 1783 Connecticut d. New York after 1850. Children: James A. 1800, Roxy 1803, William E. 1806, Permillia 1808, Emiline 1810, Hannah A. 1811, Harriet 1818, Maryann 1819, Levi T. 1822, Carolyn E., 1826. The family appears in the 1800 Federal census of Sterling, Windham Co., Connecticut and the 1820, 1830 and 1840 Federal census of Vernon, Oneida Co., New York, and in the 1850 Federal census of Parish, Oswego Co., New York. The first child,James A. SHERIDAN is my gggrandfather. James A. SHERIDAN b. 1800 d. 1871 Place of birth: Connecticut. Place of death: South Manitou Island, Leelanau Co., Michigan Married: 1830 in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, Betsey FISK b. 1799 Chesterfield, New Hampshire d. 1852 New York Children: Harriet b. 1831 New Hampshire and Aaron b. 1834 New York James A. appears in the 1830 Federal census of Chesterfield, Chesterfield Co., New Hampshire, in the 1840 Federal census of Vernon, Oneida Co., New York and in the 1850 Federal census of Constantia, Oswego Co., New York. Betsey is buried near Constantia, Oswego Co., New York. James is buried on South Manitou Island, in Lake Michigan, now a part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. James was in the Civil war (enlisting in New York) and then moved to Michigan to live near his brother William or son Aaron. Aaron A. Sheridan was lighthouse keeper on South Manitou Island. Aaron and his wife Julia MOORE drowned there in 1878, leaving my grandfather George and four brothers orphans. William E. SHERIDAN b. 1806 d. 1891 Place of birth: Hebron, Tolland Co., Connecticut Place of death: Michigan Married: Lucy TRYON b. New York 1801 d. 1897 Michigan Children: Almira 1829, Andrew 1831, Lucyann 1833, William 1835, Lyman F. 1837, Newton 1839, Harriet L. 1844. All the children were born in New York. William E. and family appear in the 1840 Federal census of Richland, Oswego Co., New York and the 1850 Federal census of Albion, Oswego Co., New York. William E. and his sons William and Lyman moved to Leelanau Co., Michigan sometime in the 1850’s. Levi T. SHERIDAN b. 1822, New York d. unknown Married: Lucy Ann Chapin 1849/50. Per the 1850 Federal census, Levi and his new wife were living in the household of Franklin Chapin (born abt. 1786 in Massachusetts) and Sally (b. abt. 1792 in New Hampshire) in Albion, Oswego Co., New York. I have more information on the descendants of James A. and William E. SHERIDAN in Michigan and the ancestors of Betsey FISK and Julia MOORE but little else on the earlier SHERIDAN ancestors other than what is included here. I have just recently searched the census records and other records in Rhode Island and Connecticut. The census records, combined with a family bible have provided me with this data. It is probable there are descendants, particularly of the many daughters, in New York. I would be most pleased to hear from somebody with information or a connection.

    2. I have vague references to my Dickinson line being in Oneida County but have nothing concrete. My line is as follows: Simon DICKINSON b 1813 New York??? m. A. Mary ???? d 1883 Chippewa Falls, WI 1. Hiram b New York??? 2. John b Wisconsin ??? possibly New York 3. Chester Wayne (Chester) DICKINSON b. 22/10/65, Rock Elm, WI??, m Agnes Jane BEATSON St. Paul, MN, d. 3/25/36, St. Paul, MN 4. Mable b. Wisconsin m J. Crozier (Cole) TAYLOR 29/6/1892 St. Paul, MN Records show Simon as being one of the first settlers to Rock Elm, WI in 1863. Supposedly Simon is buried in Rock Elm but there is no cemetery record to indicate that...he could have been buried on the homestead, although he died in Chippewa Falls. There is no record of his being buried in Chippewa Falls or the surrounding area. Would be interested in information on the Dickinson's you are researching. 3. Ida, Thanks. I appreciate any help I can get. I looked up Salisbury on The Internet Family search and found Otis b abt 1792 to Richard and Prudence SALISBury. Richard was born in 1760 in Gloucester,Providence,RI and died in Randolph, Oneida Cty,NY. Married Prudence in RI in 1785. Also lists 11 other children one of whom was Stephen born in RI in 1789. Two other Salisbury families from RI were listed as moving to NY - Welcome b. 1792 and Polly Salisbury had 8 children from 1811 to 1826 in NY and John Salisbury b 1782 who went to Greene, Washington,NY. Don't know if this helps. I searched all the web pages (from family search) that came with a Salisbury search and I didn't find any more than that. You probably know all this already but I wanted to be sure. Janet

    2. Ida B. Wiese
    3. Janet and others; Yes, I did have this info, and also Richard SALISBURY's will and pension papers. I am sure the Otis and Stephen I mentioned are his sons, but need some better answer than I have, and would really like to know their wives. Just in case you downloaded Richard SALISBURY information, the daughter, Polly is my line, but the info given in LDS, perhaps other places is wrong. Polly, the daughter of Richard and Prudence Salisbury was born Western, Oneida Co 1807, died 11/1/1879 age 72, Howardsville, Stephenson, IL, married Walter MILLER. She was mentioned by her married name in Richard's pension record and estate settlement. The Polly SALISBURY who married a SWAN has some other father, as she was married and living at the time of the legal papers of my Richard SALISBURY, hence could not be his daughter named Polly. The DAR wants to put a marker on Polly SALISBURY MILLER's grave, and is working on this line. I have two signatures of Richard SALISBURY, and he spelled his name SALSBURY. His daughter, Polly, spelled it SALESBURY. ----- Original Message ----- From: jslobvan <jslobvan@exit3.com> To: <NYONEIDA-L@rootsweb.com> > Ida, > Thanks. I appreciate any help I can get. David 16/45 had 1 male u/10, 2 males 16/26, female u/10 & wife 26/45. Possibly 2 males 16/26 were John & Charles and female u/10 Eliza. 1830 Oneida Co listed a John 20/30, female 15/20 & 50/60 female, possibly widow of David. 1840 Charles 30/40 has female 60/70 possibly widow of David. In 1850 Margaret Cady 74 is living in household of Benjamin Wickwire & wife Eliza Cady. I believe that Margaret might be the widow of David. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    1. [NYONEIDA-L] Surname CONGDON
    2. Jeanne Congdon
    3. HI, I am researching the CONGDON family which eventually settled in Michigan via Oxford County, Ontario. I have received recent information that the family may have ties to Oneida County, New York. The information I have is as follows: David Congdon b. 1806 - married Lockey Ann (unknown) Tracy Congdon b. 1812 (approx) Charles Congdon b. 1814 (approx) I think there may be at least one sister, Elizabeth and one other brother, John Congdon. Information has been located for the Elizabeth above, married to a Scidmore/Sidmore in Norwich Twp, Ontario, in 1851. Living with the family is a Sarah Congdon/en, status widow. If there are any Congdon descendants that could shed some light on this family, I would really appreciate it. Thank you. Jeanne
