    3. Hi Listers, I just received some land records for my ggggrandfather, John BRYAN. I knew that he had lived in Camden, which was verified by these. However, I also learned that he had a second wife by the name of Mehitablel, and by 1844 was living in Utica. He made many land deals in conjunction with a man named Leslie A. WARNICK while living in Utica between 1844 and 1851. Does anyone know anything about either of these men? Other people mentioned in these records are Ezra BARNS and wife Anne, Roswell L. and Margaret Colt of Baltimore, MD, Abigail BRYAN of Watertown, Amos BALDWIN of Norfolk, CT, Alfred C. & Aurelia L. PERPIGNON of Ogdensburgh, Thomas & Catharine ADAMS of Utica, William PEPPER of Vernon, Edward BIGGS, John FLANAGAN and Beorge L. BROWN of Utica. Kathy Johnson

NY Obituaries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/OneidaObits?read=121 Surname: Teller, Grower, Hook, Schwab, Sweet, Hart, Drury ------------------------- Rome Sentinel 1914 Grandpa Shirley Grand Old Man of Westernville Goes to his Reward Rome, May 22-Thomas Albert Shirley died yesterday at the home of his son, Fred F. Shirley, in Westernville. He had poor health since January, caused by liver trouble, but he has been confined to the bed only a few days. He was born in the town of Steuben, February 20, 1833, a son of John P. Shirley and Anna Shirley and was one of a family of eight children. When 8 years old his parents moved to Western and he had since lived there. His early years were spent on a farm. For 18 years he was engaged in boating, and for a number of years he was in the saw mill at Frenchville. After that he again took up farming and followed it till the death of his wife 4 years ago. Then he made his home with his son. December 27, 1855 Mr. Shirley married Miss Sarah Pillmore. Five children were born to them the following four of whom survive: Mrs. Eliza Grower, Mrs. Charles Shaul of Deansboro, Fred Shirley of Westernville, and Mrs. F. J. Grower of Oneida. Mr. Shirley was a member of the ME Church at Westernville being one of the first to join, and he was the oldest member of the congregation at the time of his death. For several years he was superintendant and teacher of the Sunday school and it was through his efforts that Children's Day was observed by that school. He had served the Epworth League as president and was a trustee and steward of the church at the time of his death. During the Civil War he was drafted but was not accepted on account of a minor deformation of one foot. He was a member of a military organization in that village and was a strong admirer of Abraham Lincoln. He was a lifelong Republican and was often chosen as delegate to conventions. He was elected Justice of the Peace of the town holding that office for several years. Besides those mentioned he is survived by eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and three sisters: Mrs James Smith and Jennie Shirley of Niagara Falls, and Mrs. Elizabeth Savage of Cleveland, Ohio. He was very fond of children and they called him Grandpa Shirley. He was kind, considerate, and charitable and loved by all. The funeral will be held at the church at 2 p.m. Sunday.

    3. Posted on: Oneida Co. NY Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Oneida?read=679 Surname: Sweet, Wheeler ------------------------- James Sweet, supposedly born in Prospect, NY, abt.1830, origins are currently unknown. The information regarding Prospect, NY was derived from his daughter, Amanda L. Sweet's, 1933 death certificate. James began appearing in the Town of Russia 1860 census as a farmhand/lumberman. Later, he had joint ventures with various dairy farmers and was also a lumberman. Prior to the 1860 census, I have been unable to detect his existence or origin. The subject, James Sweet, married possibly in the Town of Russia, Herkimer Cty. abt. 1870, to an Arris (aka Ardis and Allis) Wheeler? Ardis was supposedly b. at Cape Vincent, Jefferson Cty., abt 1853. If this is so, I believe that her family migrated to the Town of Russia early in her life. I could not find any data re: Ardis in the 1850-60 censuses. Any information regarding James Sweet will be greatly appreciated. Robert Baldwin, RBALDWIN1954@cs.com

    1. [NYONEIDA-L] Barnes
    2. Kathy Johnson
    3. I have copied a note I had sent to someone else who was searching the Barnes family and hope it will help you. , I went through all my photocopies the other night & think I may have something to help you. The Book is History of Oneida County, New York with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of some of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers. 1667-1878. Philadelphia: Everts & Fariss. This is what I found about any Barnes under Camden, Oneida, NY: pg.432: The first permanent settler of this town was Judge Henry Williams. The date of his arrival cannot now be satisfactorily ascertained. Previous to this time Jesse Curtiss had been here, and erected a saw-mill, but his family did not arrive until aftr that of Judge Williams.-------Following Williams, came Levi Matthews, Daniel Parke, Seth and Joel Dunbar, Aaron Matthews, Thomas Comstock, Jesse and Elihu Curtiss, Samuel Royce, Noah and Andrew Tuttle, Benjamin Barnes, Sr., Benjamin Barnes, Jr., Philip Barnes etc. pg. 433: A school was kept soon after the war of 1812 in the log house of Manning Barnes, at West Camden, and was probably the earliest in the neighborhood.-------Under the heading First Congregational Church, Camden (Extracts from a sermon delivered by its pastor, Rev. E. Curtis, in 1875) "The First Congregational Church of Camden was organized in Paris, on the 19th of February, 1798, by Rev. Eliphalet Steele, pastor of the Congregational Church at Paris Hill, Oneida Co., N.Y. It consisted of eight members, - Benjamin Barnes and Jemima, his wife; Noah Tuttle and Thankful, his wife; Philip Barnes and Laura, his wife; Marshal Meriam and Benjamin Barnes, Jr., - all dismissed from Mr. Steele's church. pp.434-435:Camden was fformed from the town of Mexico, March 15, 1799. At this first election the following officers were chosen,-----Commissioners of Highways, Benjamin Barnes, Abner Matthews, Ephraim Wright -----Overseers of Highways, Philip Barnes, Daniel Parke, John Rogers, Ephraim Church;---- pg. 436 lists W.W. Barnes as a trustee of the Village of Camden in 1875. pg.438-439: about 1800, Manning Barnes came to this town from the State of Connecticut, and located where the village of West Camden now stands. He built a log house on the site of the present hotel at the place, and a frame part afterwards added is now a portion of the hotel. Some time after he settled, having been obliged to keep persons over night who were on their way north and nortwest ( into Jefferson and other counties), he erected a sign and made a business of tavern-keeping for many years. Mr. Barnes was accompanied to this town by his brothers, Whiting and Lyman They selected land upon which to locate, and afterwards moved in the family of their father, Zopher Barnes. The other sons were Zopher, Street, and Pliny Barnes. Whiting Barnes settled on the farm now owned by A. Barnes, westward of West Camden. The first store at this place was established by Wilburt Barnes, who erected a small building and placed a stock of good therein. He continued in business for some time. He was a son of Manning Barnes. Later in the book, it mentions "Benjamin Wright, a prominent surveyer, who was afterwards associated with Mr. James Geddes, of Onondaga County, in the construction of the Erie Canal." He surveyed Scriba's Patent. I hope this is of some help to you. Kathy Johnson
