MATT The career of F.X. Matt, who died yesterday, was marked by success in business, by an active interest in his community, and by its unusual longevity. Had he lived until next March 25, Mr. Matt would have been 100 years old. For the past 10 weeks he had been seriously ill. For two years, his health had been precarious. But a will to live and determination to stay at the helm of his business kept him active almost to the end. Mr.Matt was best known as the founder and head of the West End Brewery. He also helped organize the Utica Cutlery Company and Utica Hotel Corporation and had been active in banking and textile affairs. His interest in charitable ventures was varied and his religious devotion an example for others. He was a great benefactor of St. Elizabeth Hospital. His role as a man of stature in the community will be long remembered. *** F.X. Matt's sister, Alice Matt Bellosa is my great-grandmother *** Any relatives are encouraged to contact me!

    3. Does anyone have any information on a George KIRKBY who moved to the Utica area sometime in the 1850's? There is a note in the family archives that he made cutlery in Sheffield, England, and we recently heard of a knife which has "Joseph KIRKBY and Son, Sheffield" engraved on the blade. There may have been a branch of the family in Ontario. Any help would be appreciated!
