Susan: The state counties that kept vital statistics are likely to be found. Of course, to look at census documents you must go to the physical site in NYC. You will find NY City and the counties represented. In a few instances, records may not be found because they burned or were otherwise destroyed. For example, you will not find 1845 state census because they burned in Albany. Some counties, however, may have made their own copies. To get maximum value, you need to use its web site and the on-site holdings. Ken > Hello Oneida: > > I am curious as to your opinions on the NYGBS? Is it worth the membership > fee? Hello Oneida: I am curious as to your opinions on the NYGBS? Is it worth the membership fee? Do they just concentrate on New York City or is there enough information on the other counties (ie; Oneida, Cayuga, etc) to make it worth the investment? The New England Historical Society was definitely worth the $$$ for my Mother's English side of the family where I have traced ancestors back to 1692. NY (Oneida and Cayuga counties) is the home of my Father's side. They were Irish and German and did not arrive here until 1843-1850. I would like to know the history of the Varick Tavern. Also, I understand there was a beer named Varick Beer made in Utica - was it in conjunction with Varick Tavern? Any information or references to sources will be greatly appreciated. Floreda Varick Tallahassee, Fl
Alice, I haven't run across William, but have you found the following Salter and Mappa reference in Scholar in the Wilderness: Francis Adrian Van der Kemp, by Harry F. Jackson, (Syracuse Univ. Pr.: 1963), p. 316 "From time to time friends asked Van der Kemp for recommendations and he complied when possible. In 1821, he recommended Joseph Salter, a brother-in-law of John Mappa, to William Bayard and also to Frederick Gebhard. The young man was a fine, able clerk and wanted a position with a future in business (Hist. Society of Pennsylvania, Van der Kemp to Le Roy, Bayard, & Co., Nov 29, 1821)" There are many other references to the Mappa family of Oneida Co. One way to cover a lot of research ground to plan productive research trip is to check the Oneida County Packet for pre-1860 data of birth, marriage & death record alternatives. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycnygs ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Andrle" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2003 10:48 PM Subject: Re: [NYONEIDA-L] Utica & Frankfort NY > My guess is New York to Utica by train (Amtrak) would be about 4 hours since > Buffalo to New York is 8 or 9 hours and Utica is about half way across the > state. My guess is New York to Utica by train (Amtrak) would be about 4 hours since Buffalo to New York is 8 or 9 hours and Utica is about half way across the state. The train doesn't run every day of the week either. You couldn't get there and back in a day and still have much time to research. If the URL given has correct info the Rome State School was for the mentally retarded. Marcy State Hospital on the Utica Road a few miles from Rome was for those adjudged, and not always fairly, insane. A case in point. I recall two people one 18 years of age who had a "nervous breakdown" as it was called. She was far from insane. Another party, who had been a music teacher and possibly a bit different, definitely was not insane. She lived there so long she did not want to leave Marcy. G. M. It was an institution for those considered mentally retarded and was located just a little ways outside the then Rome City limits. Additionally, and these may have been satellite homes, there were seemingly private homes in Rome where such persons were housed. I can still recall seeing the men sitting on the porch of a large home. Whether the homes were owned by the State School or private individuals I don't know. Insofar as I can recall these apparently private homes were occupied only by men. G. M. If I remember correctly, enumerators were instructed to call those on the premises of a boarding, or residential, school as either "boarders" or "residents". When I lived in upstate NY this school participated in Sports (baseball, basketball etc) with some of the smaller High schools (that existed in the 50's) and had some great sports teams. They were not a part of any particular league, but it was a scheduled game for many of the high schools in the area. Remarkable what they accomplished. Pat, You are thinking of the NY state school for the Deaf. Not the one they are talking about that is on the corner of Rte 365 and Rt 26. It was the Rome State School, which Jack B. decribed very well. Rome State School was what was called an "Insane Asylum" in the olden days before political correctness started to take root and they became mental hospitals. In the 1970's or 80's they either put the patients out on the street or housed them in small residential units and closed the school down. State School site is now a Medium security state prison.
