    1. [NYONEIDA-L] Jared Olcott (Olcot, Alcott), b. 1759-descendants?
    2. M.Q. Fallaw
    3. Is anybody else on this list descended from Jared Olcott, who was born in Hartford County, Connecticut, in 1759 and moved at some point (evidently circa 1800) to Oneida County (living in the Town of Lee at least some of the time) and later to Jefferson County, where he died in the 1840s? He was one of my gggg-grandfathers; I descend through his daughter Polly Olcott, who married Lyman Matthews of Camden; then through their daughter Delia Matthews, who married Leonard Budd (my brickwall Budd--still can't find his origins) in 1828 and had four sons. Their son William George Budd (b. 1832) was my great-grandfather. Jared (who also had a son named Jared among his numerous children) apparently was first married to a Mary Cadwell (probably not Caldwell, though I've seen that also) and served in the Revolution (and maybe also the War of 1812). Might anybody have details about his service other than what is readily findable on the Web? Information on the Olcotts (and Cadwells/Caldwells) going on back? I understand that there was some spurious genealogy work done on the Olcott family back in the 19th century, so it's hard to know what to believe. Jared Sr. was one of many children, and he likewise had many children, so theoretically there should be lots of Olcott descendants out there. Thanks for any info or connections! I was pleasantly surprised how well the Surrogate's Court indexes were kept, and how helpful the staff is. I also visited the library where I picked up quite a few obits from newspaper films. I could have still stayed there for three whole days more and not found everything I need, but I'll just have to go back sometime soon. I also found Floyd Cemetery, Townsend Cemetery, and Oriskany Cemetery with only minor set-backs. Cemetery photography in the rain can be a challenge, but I believe I succeeded. I even found Gardner Street and photographed my gr-gr-grandparents' old home. I had a wonderful time and am grateful for all of the help you all gave me getting ready for it! 1. Re: [NYONEIDA-L] Hiring a Professional Genealogist?
    2. Joanne Garland
    3. I once hired a genealogist for a search in the extensive Mohawk Valley records of the Montgomery County Archives in Fonda. We agreed that I could afford three hours of her time, and I made clear that I wanted to learn "the parents of . . ." a particular known ancestor. While she was never able to uncover that one piece of information (and indeed it has taken two more decades and the Internet for someone to find it), she did provide pages and pages of vital records (and her sources of the information) that remain useful to me to this day. Perhaps the most important things to do when hiring a genealogist are to make clear exactly how many hours of his/her time you can afford, and list pecisely what you are looking for--in priority order. This is what you might do if you were setting out to do the research yourself and had only a limited amount of time. By the end of the time limit, you would have covered at least the priority items on your list. Good luck! 3. Hello, I was fairly successful with a man from Alabama that went to south central Tennessee for my family research. The local librarian gave us a list , very short, of those that came in to her library. The man charged $250 for one day. He went to the court house , the library in one town , then with the correct info drove to the correct rural area and photographed the tomb stones for us and made a return trip to the library for a little more info gathered from the stones. The price covered a meal, gas, copies, photo developing, and postage for the paper copies. He also e-mailed us his results. I live in Ohio and would never have covered as much in one day since I am unfamiliar with the staff in any of the places.
