To anyone that has family from Clark Mills NY (near Westmoreland), you might be interested in checking out The Clark Mills Historical Society online at : <http://www.clarkmills.org/ >. They have numerous photographs of service men with names, quarterly issues of the Recorder online about the area, and other information. Laura
To the person who wants to 'unsubscribe': Please do not cut off your nose to spite your face. Genealogy research always has a price. Whether it is your time, a collateral cousins time or the money you pay for a research service. Investing time for volunteering, researching old records, copying old records, deciphering old records are often extremely painstaking. You might not get any information if it were not for these societies! When some asks a rootsweb list: 'hey, could you look up John Smith in the 1850 Rome, Oneida County, Census', please be aware that someone is doing the leg work for you. They may be getting the information from a service for which they pay. Paying a few dollars for a Genealogical Society that actually preserves, transcribes, maintains and promotes historical and genealogical information is a few dollars well spent. There would be very little information available to anyone researching if it were not for these Historical and Genealogical Societies. The reason that ROOTSWEB-Lists are FREE is because there is a huge database of paying customers who fund the Mother Board, which is Ancestry.com. Signed, Susan Paying Member of Ancestry.com, NEHGS and soon 'Tree Talks' Has shared, does share, and will continue to share information
I don't mind if you delete every email I send, I do delete his emails. They are against the AUP of RootsWeb. The company that provides this and almost 30,000 other genealogy mail lists for free. What he is doing is wrong. It is against the basic premise of what RootsWeb is all about. Shall I stay silent as I watch a wrong being done? I think not. Genealogy is fun when the number one rule of the provider is not being broken. Margy Bousman List Admin for 33 lists at RootsWeb (Not NYOneida of course) But it is not Jim or the list. Margy, We need all of the interested people that we can have. I hope that you don't think that leaving the list is going to hurt Jim, or unless you have done a lot of lookups or answered a lot of questions, that it is going to hurt the list. It will only cut you off from potential information of value. Jim may be a little heavy handed and definitely more repetitive than necessary, but whether digest or individual emails, he is identified as the sender. You don't have to read his emails; you don't have to even read his archives. Or you can even write annoyed emails (and after a couple more, we can choose to not read your emails also). But it is not Jim or the list. It is entirely within your power - to respond, to accept, to ignore, or whatever. Relax. Genealogy is fun Larry << -----material. I do not have an objection to Jim's service. I have many times made the run to our county history room for someone that contacted us because my husband maintains the county genealogy site and no one else from our chapter was available. I have done the same for our township material. It is a choice. We are not being forced to contact Jim. To all: Promoting CNYGS is still helping the genealogical community. When one is helped, the entire community is helped. Conversely, when the genealogical community loses choices or options, we all lose. The fact is, not many researchers promote anything even after they have been helped tremendously. It seems to be a I got mine attitude now see if you can get yours. Once in a blue moon a researcher filled with the joy of discovery takes the time to thank me for giving them options. It's enough for me to know that I am doing promotions so researchers can make decisions. I believe in sharing choices, you make your own decisions. A negative attitude is poison to a researcher's progress and limits their progress. Keep an open mind! Be tolerant and understanding and try to see the bright side. CNYGS has done 40 years of abstracting in 48 counties straddling various migration routes. I have a right to blow their horn! I also offer to do a lookup of the nearest current subscriber/member public collection of "Tree Talks". I hope to hear from others about this so called "issue". I believe we have to work together to become strong and successful. By the way, it will not be long before the genealogical community will see more indices of county packets on our website and this will help the community make more informed decisions at no cost. I see it as a win/win outcome. I wish you the best of luck in your research endeavors, Jim Hartigan Camillus, NY CNYGS Member ----- Original Message ----- From: "liz Parmalee" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 29, 2003 7:51 PM Subject: Re: [NYCAYUGA] Barber ALLEN - 1810-1830 census - NY>IL > Mel, > Mr. Hartigan promotes his organization in answer to all inquiries people > post on different mailing lists pertaining to western NY. As far as I know, not one person other than the columnist in the genealogical community, was contacted for their side of the story. This appears to be a unilateral decision with a survey that appeared to have a foregone conclusion or predetermined result. Let your voice ne heard! Indifference is a killer. Besides other things it kills genealogical columns, it kills record centers, it kills records, it kills cemeteries.......It's killing our kids. HONOR your ancestors by acting as a community. When a monoply newspaper unitlaterally decidedes to discontinue a beweekly genealogy column, we all lose! When kids vanadalize a cemetery we all lose! Use your voice, pen, e-mail, feet or you your heritage will continue to erode. Thanks, Jim hartigan

Genealogy is the number two hobby and the column was very popular. I receive comments where ever I go. The column was read in the North Country, Cortland, Rochester, Utica, etc. The newpaper did a survey, I don't know who the market was. The paper wanted to feature fewer hobbies and cancelled several others as well. How did you hear about it? Hi I am looking for an obituary or death information on my great-great grandfather, Edward Cheetham, who lived in Whitestown and New Hartford. He was born about 1823 in Heaton Norris, England. I last found him on the 1900 census in New Hartford, but by 1910, he was not on the census. So he probably died between those years. Is there a newspaper or other resources for that area where I might be able to find any information? Or can anyone look up that information? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
