    3. I received a note from the Scofield photographer in Syracuse and she says her name was originally spelld SCHOFIELD, so not related to the Utica photographer. The Utica Historical Society may have some information on early area photographers to help ID the photos that were found. 1. [NYONEIDA-L] Utica Photographer?
    2. David Rafferty
    3. Hi, I am wondering if you are from the same Scofield family that did photography in Utica in the 19th century and more? My wife's great-great grandmother was from Utica, Helen Boes, and had her portrait taken, very nicely I must say, as a teenager, probably in 1880's. I am a member of the [email protected] list and a lady recently wrote that she came across a bunch of old family photos taken by Utica photographers, ca 1900, and wondered if anyone new of any records that may have been kept all these years to help id the photos and re-unite with their present families. If you can help, or provide any leads, your input would be greatly appreciated. Dave Rafferty, Kalamazoo

    1. [NYONEIDA-L] Eliza (unkown maiden name) BUTLER -Oneida Co., Lee & Ava
    2. I am trying to find anyone who may be researching Eliza (unknown maiden name) BUTLER. She was married to Erastus BUTLER about 1853 in Lee, Oneida Co., NY by Nicholas Ufford, Justice of Peace. Erastus was born in Lee in 1827. Eliza was born in Ava, just north of Lee, July 10, 1835. Erastus died in December 1, 1880 near Lee. Eliza was still alive October 30, 1922 when she applied for a Civil War Pension on Erastus. She must have died shortly after that, for no more information was given in the file, which was retired Jan 29, 1923 and on June 27, 1927 the file was marked ABANDONED. Eliza may have remarried. But not according to the application she filed on October 30, 1922, she was 87 years old at the time and states she never remarried. Following are children that were probably her's as found on census reports and the last two reported in the pension file, along with birth dates: Alice A. BUTLER, b. abt. 1855 Henrittie (also found as Esidora) BUTLER, b. abt. 1859 George William BUTLER, b. abt. 1862 Franklin J. BUTLER, b. May 03, 1866 Francis Elizabeth BUTLER, b. March 11, 1874 Any information on any of the above people would be appreciated. I would love to know the maiden name of Eliza! Her last known mailing address was in Bernhard Bay, Oswego Co., NY in 1922. This is were she filed for the above mentioned pension. She was 87 years old at that time. Thanks. Dave in PA

    3. Your best bet would be to check with the Oneida County Historical Society. I know a few years ago they had a "photography expert" who could answer your questions. I've seen Scofield stereoviews (of Utica) on Ebay as recently as last week. There are also quite a few Utica City Directories you can check. For example; the 1874 directory lists a David Harris as a Utica photographer residing at 33 Tracy; and an Abner Gardner, photographer with a business at 109 Genesee; and a Charles Mundy listed as a photographer at 11 Broad St. etc. etc. Gardner and Mundy also have advertisements in the directory. I didn't check the others but here is a link for the 1874 Utica City Directory that is searchable online. http://www.distantcousin.com/Directories/NY/Utica/1874/ Here is a link for 1854: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~godwin/utica1854/ www.ancestry.com has city directories for utica (1887-1891) and for Amsterdam (same years. There is a money figure with each entry - $8 $5 or $3 - I was assuming that the lower number were kids and the higher ones adults - that may not be true - thus the reason I put POS Child - only the Thomas Murphy Child specifically indicated it was a child - except the infant marked - none of these names said infant. 3. Just a note that these are only the historical markers that were installed by the NYS Education Department from 1926 to 1966. There are many, many more markers that were placed by other groups such as the DAR and especially the county and local historical societies. In Erie County, for example, the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society and the Landmark Society have placed the majority of the historical markers here.
