Hi Susan, I can't add a thing to what you already know about John Whitney, but if you haven't pursued Thankful-4 Benedict's roots, I can give you what it says in the Benedict Genealogy, which I have here. There are, however, absolutely no details for Thankful other than her birth date and the fact that she married John Whitney, not even a marriage date. Mary Kifissia, Greece > In the Whitney book it states that John Whitney was born in > Ridgefield, CT 1/28/1717, married his first wife Hephzibah Olmstead > 6/15/1746 in Ridgefield, CT, that Hephzibah died in Ridgefield, CT > 5/20/1753 and that he married Thankful Benedict who was born > 6/12/1727.
For what it's worth, I did find a Samuel Whitney, but in the 1800 census for Oneida cnty. Oneida did not appear as a county in the 1790. Samuel was in the town of Westmoreland. I don't know how close that was to Paris/now Kirkland. Jennifer, CT In a message dated 5/22/2004 9:20:58 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes:

The book says on page 26 that John is known to have visited his son Samuel in . Paris now Kirkland, Oneida Co, NY about 1797 when he was 80 years old. It also says that neither the place nor date of his death nor information about Thankful Benedict is known nor burial places for John or either of his wives. It says that he lived the latter part of his life with his son Ezra, son of Thankful at or near Johnstown. The book states that Thankful Benedict died before John. Hi...I am trying to find out information on my Lusk ancestors. I believe my gggg grandfather Salmon Lusk married Elizabeth (?) in the Presbyterian Church on March 21, 1894. Would anyone know if the Presbyterian church records go back that far, and if so how I might obtain a copy of those records? Thank you for your assistance. Kathleen
Hello all - is there anyone out there who is an ancestor of Gerald A. Guthrie or Ellen Guthrie O'Neil ? Would you be able to look at a photo perhaps of Gerald and give a positive ID ? Mark in the Hudson Valley [email protected]
Lee Centre is now spelled Lee Center. In the bio of Roswell F. Spinning it states that he descended from LEVY SPINNING and THANKFUL BENTON; that is in error as he descended from NATHANIEL SPINNING and THANKFUL BENTON. This has been well documents; I too, descend from Nathaniel thru his son DANIEL. ALMER SPINNING married MARIAH CRITTENDEN and we have been unable to locate where she was buried; he is buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Taberg, Town of Annsville, NY. I'm unable to make attribution as the material was given to me and I did not note the source. G. M. Freeman Nil Novi Sub Sole CURTIS SPINNING the Son of Roswell F.Spinning and Lucinda Dewey, was born in the town of West Huron, Lewis Co., N. Y., July 8, 1822. He settled with his parents in Lee, Oneida Co., in 1830. He had but limited advantages for an education, still by close observation he has acquired that practical knowledge which places him far ahead of many more favored with knowledge gleaned from books. That such is the case is patent from the fact of his having been district clerk every year save one since 1845 and his holding other positions of trust in his town. He also holds the office of steward and class-leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he is a zealous member. It is a pleasure to turn away from the selfish world and contemplate one whose life has been spent in acts of charity and mercy. Such a one is Mr. Spinning in every sense of the word. Were it not for him and his mother, Lee Centre, in all probability, would not have its beautiful Methodist Episcopal Church, the unfortunate would receive much less attention, and public enterprises generally would suffer. He was married, Jan. 27, 1858 to Euphemia Washburn daughter of Martin Washburn, whose biography appears in this volume; she was born Feb. 25, 1820. Both joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1870, she having previously been a Baptist. For genealogy see the biography of Roswell F. Spinning and Martin Washburn. ______________________________________________________________________________ ROSWELL F.SPINNING is a lineal descendant of the third generation of Levy Spinning, who emigrated from Scotland in the year 1745, and settled in Guilford, Conn. Levy Spinning and his wife, Thankful Benton, had six children viz., John, Polly, Sarah, Betsy, Daniel, and Benjamin, all of whom lived to maturity and had families. Benjamin, the father of Roswell F., was married five times, but from only one of his wives, Sarah Moulton, did he have children. Their union resulted in the birth of seven children, viz., Roswell F., Hannah and Anna (twins), Betsey, Almer and Almira (twins), and Malinda, all of whom lived to raise families, and were residents of the town of Lee. Roswell F. was born in Lee, Oneida Co., N. Y., Sept. 17, 1794. He was married Nov. 19, 1819, to Lucinda Dewey, who was born in Windham Co., Conn., Aug. 17, 1801. By this Union three children were born, viz., Curtis, July 8, 1822; Jay, Oct. 20, 1827, and died April 22, 1832 ; and a son who died in infancy, July 10, 1834. Mr. Spinning was a successful farmer. He purchased the farm now owned by his son Curtis in 1830, where he resided until his death, which occurred Sept. 14, 1870. His father died at Lee, N. Y., Nov. 8, 1848. His wife, Lucinda, is still living on the old homestead with her son Curtis. She is a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and noted for kindness of heart where help is needed. She assisted largely with her means in the erection of the beautiful church at Lee Centre. These likenesses and this personal sketch were given by her in memory of her husband. ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! It should be noted that the date in brackets, 1819, was in the original, 1889, and I changed it to 1819 based on what would, IMO, be logical. G. M. I've seen the name Beebe on the various lists and found this in an old notebook of newspaper clippings. Probably from the Rome Sentinel and, insofar as I can tell, it is dated 1930. Hi Recently received a transcription of bible records for Thomas Hibbard and family. They start with his first wife Ruth Collins including children and include his second wife Delia Rebecca Palmer. One of his daughters, Lois Arilla Hibbard married Irving J Dye and when the bible was passed down to her in 1895, she included Dye family records. Lois was born in Brookfield on February 10, 1854. In one clipped obituary, Thomas' father is described as one of the founders of Bridgewater? The bible was presented to "Dea. Thomas by the Columbus Quarter Church" of which he was a member in 1870. Their are clipped obituaries for Irving J Dye, George F Hibbard and John N. Hibbard. Please let me know if anyone is interested in the records. Dianne
Is anyone able to scan the Rome Sentinel obit for Anthony Dorsino, age 94, who died 30 APRIL and whose funeral was held 4 MAY? If so, please contact me privately since I will have to give you another e-mail address to which to send the obit as this version of Juno does not support a graphic. Incidentally, the obit at the Sentinel web site is very short with almost no details. Thanks. G. M.
