    1. Re: [NYONEIDA-L] Josiah Stillman and William Stillman
    2. Susan, Found a William Stillman in 1790 CT census Wethersfield. There are Robbins on it as well. But again, it only gives name of head of household and how many living in house by age. If you think this would be helpful, please let us know. Also found a W. Stillman in Oneida cnty in 1810. Westmoreland and Whitestown are in Oneida Co, NY. William I believe was born in 1777 in Wethersfield, CT, married Betsy and then Sarah Stebbins (mother of my g-g-g-grandmother Betsy Elizabeth Stillman Stafford) in Deansboro, NY and died in Kirklan, Oneida Co, NY. Josiahs wife was Comfort Robbins. She was born 2/16/1738 in Wwethersfield, CT and died 2/21/1804 in Westmoreland, Oneida Co, NY.

    1. Re: [NYONEIDA-L] Josiah Stillman and William Stillman
    2. Susan, Don't know if this will help .... seems like the ages may fit.. According to the 1800 Census, Josiah Stillman was living in "Westmoreland Town of Oneida County New York" He was the head of Household. In his household were 2 free white males aged 16-26 William would be ca. 23 in 1800 1 free white male aged 45 and over Josiah would be ca. 61 1 free white female aged 10-16 1 free white female aged 45 and over. Comfort would be ca. 62 no slaves Index information: STILLMAN, JOSIAH (1800 U.S. Census) New York , ONEIDA, NO TWP LISTED, Series: M32 Roll: 23 Page: 179 These were the only two entries that my search came up with for all of US Years 1790-1820 and 1860-1930. I use Heritage Quest to access the Federal Census records. You may want to re post specifically to have someone with Ancestry.com or Genealogy.com to see if they can access William in the 1830-1850 (HQ d/n have those years indexed, although I can view them given the page numbers, etc. ). STILLMAN JOSIAH NY ONEIDA NO TWP LISTED 1800 STILLMAN JOSIAH 35 M W NJ NJ BURLINGTON BEVERLY 1860 I will attach the 1800 image, so you can see. It's a beautiful nice image, he is the first one listed and it clearly states where he was living in 1800. Even if DAR won't accept census information, you'll have the image for your records. Perhps you could try contacting Westmoreland Town hall to get a start on where to find land records, or the Oneida County Historical Society? [email protected] If I find anything else on William, I'll let you know. I have found out that they will not accept as adequate proof the book, The Stillman Family compiled by Francis D. Stillman, Jr. in 1969 because it either does not have sources with it or the copy I gave them did not have sources with it. The book is about George Stillman and his descendants. Perhaps Jonathan continued to look after their affairs when they moved north to NY State. http://www.southjerseynews.com/issues/july/m070403k.htm Brotherton seems to have been created by New Jersey. Have you tried contacting the NJ State Archives in Trenton? Roy -----Original Message----- From: Cora L McDonnell [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, June 23, 2004 10:43 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NYONEIDA-L] Oneida Bible Society and Oneida Indians Dear List, My mother-in-law had an old Bible which belonged to her ggggrandfather Jonathan C. JOHNSTON. Printed in 1819, Jonathan wrote inside the cover, "Jonathan Johnston, his book the gift of the Oneida Bible Society 1820." It is a small (4 in by 7 in) leather bound Bible with the initials "O.B.S." stamped into the front cover. He also listed the names/birth dates of himself, his wife (Nancy) and their nine children. Jonathan and Nancy are buried in the Hastings Cemetery, Oswego County, NY. From 1850 census records, the family must have moved to Oswego County about 1835. Jonathan was born in New Jersey (wish I knew what county), and Nancy was born in Schohaire County, NY. Can anyone tell me where to find information about the Oneida Bible Society? Did the Society do missionary work among the Indians tribes living in Oneida County? I have reason to believe that Jonathan was an Indian agent in Oneida County during the 1820s. An old 1938 Syracuse newspaper clipping, that my mother-in-law had saved, showed a photo of an old man, her uncle Thomas ROBINSON, looking at Indian Treaties which belonged to his grandfather Jonathan C. JOHNSTON. The article told the following about Johnston: "...Jonathan Johnston, who in 1822 was a government Indian agent in New Jersey. Most interesting of the documents is a copy of a treaty drawn in Green Bay, Mich., between Indians living in that region and clans of the Oneida, Stockbridge, St. Regis and Tuscarora Indians of New York State. The treaty was drawn in 1822 while Robertson's copy was made and certified the next year before one John W. Quinney of the town of Stockbridge in Oneida County. It provides for the sale of lands by the Menomini Indians of the vicinity of Green Bay, Wis., to the New York State tribes which wished to settle in that vicinity. The tribes of this state agreed to pay the Wisconsin Indians $3,000 for the lands in question. The treat bears the "x's" of the chiefs of the tribes concerned together with their names in English and the Indian languages. On the rear of the treaty is its approval signed by President James Munroe in 1823. Other papers in Robinson's possession deal with business affairs of the Brotherton Indians of New Jersey." I would appreciate hearing any ideas you might have about locating an Indian agent in the 1820s. Several years ago I wrote to NARA about Jonathan C. Johnston, Indian agent. 1. Need to find places in Oneida
    2. My husband and I are fortunate enough that we will be able to travel to mid-NY the first week of August, but it will be to 3 counties and time will be somewhat limited. I'm gathering everything I can so we won't waste a moment or regret not doing something at the last stop. Our major interest is Constantia where the CARRs and FRANCISCOs lived. William Taylor Francisco was a mason and lived in the town just a few years, just long enough to be on a federal census and for his first born to meet and marry Nancy Louise Carr, daughter of Francis and Phela Delpha (Heath) Carr, who arrived 1830ish and remained until Francis died 9 Nov. 1883 and is buried in the Trinity Episcopal Church there. His youngest daughter, Lydia Carr Roy, and her husband Joseph A. ROY, also died and I assume are buried in the same churchyard. Lydia A. Roy died 30 Dec. 1910 and Joseph died 11 April 1926. A grandson, Francis Peter or Peter Francis Francisco, remained with his grandparents or in the same area until at least 1892 when he was found on the Constantia census. By 1900 he was elsewhere. I've been to Albany and know the drill there for marriages, but this is rather early and I wonder where exactly in Oswego marriage records might be found? Would it be better to go to the town hall or the city courthouse...if there is one? From the looks of the church photo on the Constantia church site, I would say the church does not have records there, so where would they be kept? I see only a mailing addres for the historical society. I would like to visit it. Is there a way to meet someone to look at records? I have rented film from the FHC and did find some land records for the CARR family, but so few tidbits...selling of land, but not the buying of that land. Any guidance would help us on our brief visit. Shirley Maynard

They replied that they had no records concerning him. Best wishes, Cora McDonnell [email protected]

    3. As you can see this was posted on the New London Conn. list. The site has many sets of postcards from upstate N.Y. including Utica and two sets of Trenton Falls. I was just browsing around the Internet and found the Robert Dennis Collection of stereoviews. It's a huge collection of northeastern stereoviews, and it has a section for "New London, Tolland and Windham counties". I tried using the search engine, but the drop down menu was easier to navigate. There also are a good many specific towns, such as Hartford. I'm still a big fan of hand colored vintage postcards, but there is something intriguing about stereoviews. For one thing, they are 3-D views of landscapes our ancestors may have seen, and most are older than the oldest view postcard. Here's the link to the "browse" page: http://digital.nypl.org/dennis/stereoviews/browse.html ______________________________ ------- End of forwarded message -------

    3. Thank you very much Ms Jennifer, I appreciate you taking the time to do the lookups for me. My grandfather never was interested in the "old country" so he never asked or paid attention when the family gathered. So my info on this family is limited to a death cert, the 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses and a little bit of info that my grandmother gathered from some of grandpa's cousins. For whatever reason I never got around to checking the 1910, so thank you very much for that bit of info. Not sure about Margaret Cassidy. In 1870, it looks like Patrick's wife (suspected brother of Edward) is Mary, with a son Michael and daughter Catherine. The other Cassidy "up the road" in the 1900 census looks like the same Margaret that you found in 1910 except she has all three of her children living with her at the time, none of them a Michael or Catherine. So I'm not sure how they fit into the puzzle. I can't make out Julia's immigration date in 1910 either (and they didn't bother to include it the 1900). It almost looks like the last digit could be a 4, maybe 1854. As for Julia Halligan, in 1860 she should be about 17, if the birthday info in the 1900 census is correct, so if any of the Julia's that you found correspond to "my" Julia it would probably be one of the 20-somethings but I wouldn't know how to check at the moment. What I need to find is Edward & Julia's marriage certificate but am not sure where to check. My grandmother attempted to find info from the church and the town clerk but she apparently was unsuccessful. However, that was many years ago and I don't remember if she had the data from the census that I have collected which should give me a better idea of their marriage year. I may need to try again and see if anything turns up. I was also thinking of doing some searching of the NY State census. Since I don't know what info was collected in those censuses, do you think that there might be any good info that might be gleaned from them? Well thanks again for all the help. Steve
