Dear Folks, This afternoon while I was driving the long familiar route back home from the Buffalo VA Hospital my mind was wandering all over the place. Now I don't know what prompted this memory but nonetheless I remembered every little detail of it as my mother had related it to me on a number of occasions. It happened back around 1934 when I was about two or three years old. Apparently I had developed a very serious case of double pneumonia and had to be hospitalized in nearby Pittsburgh. I guess I was one sick little girl. No doubt but what my mother rarely left my bedside and no doubt but what our family physician Dr. Pergosi was there as often as he could be. Back in those days doctors made house calls and he was the doctor who had delivered me. Such a kind gentle man. I guess Dr. Pergosi was pleased with my progress and one day when he came to my hospital bedside he asked me if I could sing a song for him. I guess I beamed at him and let him know that I really knew a song I could sing to him. The name of it was "Birdie With a Yellow Bill." The simple lyrics went like this: Birdie with a yellow bill Hopped upon my window sill, Cocked his shining eye and said "Ain't you 'shamed you sleepy head?" Apparently it pleased the doctor so much that he reached in his pocket of change and came up with a dime. When he handed it over to me as a reward I was astounded and thrilled. I had never had that much money of my own in my life! Pennies yes, but TEN cents?? In retrospect I believe I valued that dime somewhere between one dollar and a million dollars! And no doubt but what that precious dime of mine helped me to recover and no doubt but what Dr. Pergosi had figured that it might do the trick in the first place. PS. I still remember the song. Will sing it again but it's gonna cost you a dime! :-) vee
