Dear Folks, Everyone knows that hospital food is hardly haute couisine but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of it and how tasty it was. Not only that but what was served on my tray was enough to feed the Fifth Army. I couldn't believe my first breakfast. The first thing under my nose was a lovely hot cheese omelet with toast. That plus a nice ice cold carton of milk and a carton of orange juice suited me just fine. However, what I couldn't believe was that in addition to that was a large bowl of farina or Cream of Wheat. How in the world could anybody eat that much food for breakfast? I finally asked one of the nurses if there was any patient who finished all of it up and she said that a number of the men not only finished everything but actually asked for seconds! Totally unbelievable. Lunch was equally surprising. I had another large serving of food--more than I could eat--and with only one exception, it was delicious in every way. Of course with lunch and dinner there was always dessert, whether it be Jello with Cool Whip or chocolate pudding or the yummiest angel food cake. With each meal I stuffed myself far too much and had to spend the rest of the day getting over it. One of the things that surprised me was that not only was I being fed three nourishing meals a day, on my tray were packets of salt and sugar (not Sweet 'N Low). Obviously I wasn't being served diet meals. I swear I haven't eaten that well since I was in the Navy in the 1950s. And that's something to say. So don't knock hospital couisine until you experience it the next time. Oh, BTW, as a dessert for my last dinner was a huge piece of sweet watermelon. And guess what? I ate every bite! vee
