One of his sons (my gggrandfather was named Henry Townsend Dickinson. I am trying to trace back beyond Amos and Paul Gifford has been very helpful. One thing I know beyond question was that the same names you mention were common in my line of the Dickinson family and that the passing down of family names was beyond common. I have just been checking out Zebulon Dickinson, father of Townsend Dickinson. One of his sons was named Samuel, who I believe may be Amos father. Our family records indicate that Samuel was the name of Amos' father, but never knew where Henry Townsend Dickinson got his middle name from. I was alway pretty sure that there had to be a Townsend that it came from. This makes the most sense to me and if you can shed any light on it or if I can help you, I'd be happy to correspond.
