Hi, I recently received a copy of a family tree written in the early 1900's, from the Smithsonian. There are no sources, no dates, and there are inaccuracies just in what I have, so this isn't authoritative in any way, but there are a lot of names that I can try to track down. :) My ancestor is Alvis Hewitt, son of David B. Hewitt and probably Liza Johnson. The trees were written by his half-brother, John Napoleon Brinton Hewitt, b 1859 in Lewiston, son of Dr. David B. Hewitt and Harriet Brinton. Throughout the trees, the name Brinton appears also as Printon, Printup, and Printeux. David B Hewitt was born about 1815. He is listed as an "adopted white boy." Son of Brainard Hewitt, MD and Mary or Rebecca Alvis (not sure if this is the adopting family). Harriet Brinton is the daughter of Jonothan Printon, who was 1/4 Indian, and Eliza Mt Pleasant. Jonothan's parents were supposedly a "full-blood French officer and a half breed Mohawk Maiden". Eliza Mt Pleasant is the daughter of John Mt Pleasant Sr, and Sarah Jack. Eliza had many siblings. The children, in order listed, are: male, Eliza, William, John, male (died), Lucinda, Mary, female (died), Lucretia, Alexander, Clinton, and Sarah (Sally). Sarah Jack's parents were the daughter of Capt. Wm. Printup (son of Col Printeux, a French officer) and "Mr. Jack, warrior." Sarah had several siblings, including "Old Jack", "George Green's mother," "Lucy Isaac Smith's mother," and "Katie, William Chew's mother." John Mt Pleasant is the son of Capt Mt Pleasant, British officer, and a Mohawk maiden. There are also individuals listed just as 'Oneida chieftain' or 'Tuskarora chief', and a note of someone marrying a white captive who was adopted into the bear clan, which are interesting even if nothing more than a family legend. :) Yes, this is very rough, and I'm certainly not relying on any of this to be correct. :) But I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about these families? I thought there might be a chance at least for the Mt Pleasant family, as so many children are listed. Thanks for any help! Rene'
