    2. Re: Nancy's info on land records: If you want to view the films yourself, they can be ordered through your local LDS Family History Center at no charge. You will find it listed under: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I checked the FamilySearch website and the closest one to you is: Buffalo New York 1424 Maple Road Williamsville, Erie County, New York, United States Phone: (716) 688-2439 Hours: M 10am-5pm; T-Th 10am-9pm; Sat 10am-2pm. The staff is really helpful. You do not need to be a member of the church to use this facility. I am researching Gad Pierce and Robert Nichols of Lewiston. Since I live in Salt Lake City, I have access to THE Family History Library (the largest genealogical library in the world!) If you just can't wait for the film, I will be happy to do a lookup for you. Just check the Family History Library Catalog (www.familysearch.org,,,click on browse categories...then on libraries), send me the film nos. and details about your person and I'll check it out. Perhaps someday someone can do a lookup for me at the courthouse. Continued good luck! Bev originally from Cheektowaga

Bev, does your local FHC waive all rental fees for microfilms? At most FHCs, the policy is you may use anything already on the premises for free. If they have to order films from Salt Lake City, though, there's a small charge to cover the shipping. The church's own Web site says: "A staff member [at an FHC] can help you find family histories, biographies, genealogies, and other compilations in the catalog. Many of these materials are on microfilm and can be loaned to local Family History Centers for a small fee." (<http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,35-1-19-5,FF.html>) I just wanted to clarify for folks who haven't yet used these wonderful resources.... Ellen <niagara@unchi.org>
