My gggrandfather, Nathan Bates is on the 1820 Federal Census in the Township of Hartland, Niagara Co., NY. He was born somewhere in Vermont in 1796. His wife, Charity Tempel, was born somewhere in NY in 1801/02. I don't know when they married, but they had their first child, Edward Stubbs Bates, circa 1823 in Tonawanda, NY. At least that is what Edward claims in a newspaper interview around 1900. The family moved to Wayne, Steuben Co., NY before the 1825 NY Census, because they are on that census in Steuben Co. The family grew by at least 6 more children, and then they moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1853. (Actually Edward and another brother went about five years sooner) I cannot find any trace of Nathan or Charity dying and being buried in Michigan. One family story has Nathan returning to NY to care for an ailing mother. Charity was in Michigan until at least December 1864. Could Nathan have died in NY? And was he buried there somewhere? After Charity died, was she moved to NY to be buried with her husband? Are they both resting next to Nathan's mother somewhere? I'm hoping that the answer to these questions will lead me to Nathan's and Charity's parents somewhere. I am also interested in Edward's middle name of Stubbs. Does that ring a bell with anyone? Any help with any of the above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. Les Bates
