wow, i have gotten letters from former Niagara County area folks all over the country who are pining for Beef on Wecks! when i make my genealogy trip to Olcott, having one of these sandwiches will be at the top of my list of things to do! i even found a restaurant in Lockport that has a web page and advertises Beef on Weck...wonder if they could ship one UPS overnight to me in California in one of those little beer cooler gadgets...

Chris and Group, I'm delighted with the response you received about Beef on Weck. I've been "back home" here for over 25 years but I'll tell you, you have to REALLY know where they serve the BEST Beef on Weck. My vote goes to Schwabels(?) down/up in Erie County somewhere. You have to stand in line to order your own special sandwich, but when you approach the HUGE roast of beef that the man is standing behind, you know that you can order it just the way you want the beef--rare, medium rare, medium or well done. He smiles at you and then starts carving away, layer after thin layer until it's piled up high on the kummelweck roll. It's to DIE for! When Carol and Bill and I were doing lunch yesterday, I asked our waitress Jackie if she knew where the best place was around Niagara Falls to go for beef on weck. She had to think about it a bit (note: it WASN'T D.J.s!) :-) but she came up with the name of a place--Anderson's on Niagara Falls Blvd. near 82nd St. But here's the thing of it. Anderson's is more like a roadside icecream place, not a restaurant. In fact their motto is "Building Memories, Cone by Cone." But, hey, if Jackie says they have the best beef on weck, you can betcha that I'm gonna take her word for it.
