    3. Dear Sara, et al, > I'm looking for the parents or siblings of Arnold Stevens and Charlotte > McLaughlin who married and lived in Niagara Co, NY ca 1835-1855--probably > earlier. > > I've been told Arnold (and Charlotte) were listed in the 1850 census as > "Earle" but I don't have access to NY records so haven't been able to confirm. > Also that he purchased Lot #30 in Youngstown NY on Oct 22, 1843 for $150 > and sold it to Peter Tower on Mar 5, 1855 for $600. Also sold 1/2 of lot > #32 in 4th range in Youngstown of Sept 16, 1854 for $300. He was a carpenter. Yes, he ("Earle") and Charlotte are on the Town of Porter 1850 census (no doubt Village of Youngstown) as follows: Earle, 42, VT, Carpenter Charlotte, 32 [born 1818], NY Wesley A., 9, NY Erial, 8, NY Eleanor [?], 1, NY In the same household was the family of William H. Doyle, 43, Canada, merchant, and his wife Sarah F., 38, VT, with their children. Sarah COULD have been Earle/Arnold's sister. > Charlotte McLaughlin Stevens died in Niagara Co (probably Youngstown) in > 1855 and was buried there with other infant children who died young. Have > no idea what cemetery. My cemetery records don't show her and no official records, Youngstown or Town of Porter, would now have a record of her death. > After Charlotte McLaughlin Stevens died in 1855, Arnold Stevens moved to > Knox Co, OH where other relatives lived. Census records there show he was > born in VT in 1806. So I know he started out in VT, moved to Niagara Co > (around > Youngstown, I think), married and had several children, and left for OH > ca 1855 where he lived with an Edward Beach, also from NY. The Beach name isn't a Town of Porter name. I have a feeling that it's more Town of Cambria. > An infant daughter, Ida Stevens, stayed in NY to be raised by relatives, > married an Anderson and had sons Frank Anderson and William Anderson. I have no record of her or her Anderson sons. > Any links to this couple or information about Stevens/Stephens or McLaughlin > families living in Niagara Co, NY during this period will be MOST appreciated > as this is a major brick wall for me!! Regarding MCLAUGHLIN, we had two McLaughlin families living in Town of Porter early on. They were John F. and Ephraim, both farmers. In fact part of the land that I presently own on Creek Road (Lot 25) was purchased by John from the Holland Land Co. He finally obtained the deed to the property on 11 March 1837. He had purchased 91 acres. Pool's "Landmarks of Niagara Co." states that John settled in the town in 1815 and came over from Canada. He and his brother(?) Ephraim lived in this area and were members of the Board of Trustees of School District No. 3--John from 1824-1852, and Ephraim from 1838-1850. John and family show up on the 1820 census. He was over 45 [born prior to 1775] and in his household was a female under the age of 10 [born 1811-1820]. On the 1830 census John is age 60-70 [born 1761-1770] and there is a female age 10-15 [born 1816-1820]. On the 1840 census is both John and Ephraim. John is now only 30-40 years old [born1801-1810]. He's probably John Jr. and he shows up on earlier census in an appropriate age group. Ephraim is 70-80 [born 1761-1770]. There is no Stevens/Stephens family on the 1840 census. In the 1850 census there are both John Jr. and Ephraim who is now only 37 [born 1813], probably Ephraim, Jr. Both John Jr. and Ephraim Jr. were born in Canada. I find no records of the burials of John and Ephraim, Sr. Sara, since there is evidence that your Charlotte McLaughlin may have been the daughter of John who came here from Canada, that would be the best place for you to look. Once again, the migration pattern repeats itself. From New England to Canada to Niagara County and then further west. Good luck in your research. vee
