    1. [NYNIAGAR] 1892 census

    3. My great-grandparents lived in LaSalle in Sept 1894 when my great-grandfather , John Bower died. I was looking at the microfilm for the state census of 1892 last night at the local FHC and it took me a while to figure out that it was arranged by "towns" which correspond to what I would call townships. Luckily they had an atlas there that showed me the towns of Niagara Co but it wasnt detailed enough for me to tell if LaSalle would have been in Niagara town or the next one over. The obit says he lived in LaSalle two years, so when the 1892 census was done in Feb 1892, he may not have been there yet. I read through all the entries for Niagara town up to half way through district 5 and the only possible match was a John Bowers, 59, from Germany and a Tailor who was on page 7 of district 1. This may well be him but all other references to him say Bower and there was no family listed with him. At first I thought maybe the census was head of household only but found whole families later on. Does anyone else have experience with this state census? Is it possible that he was listed at his place of business and the family may have been further than I read? Supposedly the whole county was on this film [878329]. Why was there a section for the "Village of N. Tonawanda" when everything else was by town? Are there any indexes for this census? Beverly
