A teacher in Kalamazoo wrote a genealogy guide for Michigan pupils-- it may have been "Know Your Ancestors" by E. Williams, pub. Tuttle-- in which she reported that 85% of western Michigan pioneers came directly from New York State. Also, Madison Grant noted in "Conquest of a Continent" that by 1830, over 100 steamers were plying Lake Erie every week between Buffalo and Detroit. Bet they were mostly empty eastbound!
