Mary Johnson was born in 1813 in Yorkshire, England. According to her obituary, she came to Canada at the age of 14 (1927) which is the same year 2 of her brothers claim to have come as well. Her obituary states that she was married at the age of 17 which would make it about 1830. We believe her husband for this marriage was Charles Murray Sweatland. We have seen Joseph as well and many spellings of his surname (Schwetland, Sweetland, Swetland are some). Her obituary says she lived at Niagara Falls until the death of this first husband, and that 6 children were left from this marriage. We can only find 3 daughters, all named in her obituary: Harriet, b 12 Feb 1839, Jane Ann, b 20 Jan 1840, and Elizabeth, b 2 Dec 1842. It has been claimed that one of these were born on Grand Island, but I have no proof of that. Charles must have died about 1842, but certainly before 1847 when Mary re-married in Ontario. The only trace I can find in Niagara County is Charles Swetland in the 1840 census for Wheatfield in Niagara County. The family listed is one male 30 to 40, 2 females under 5 and 1 female 20 to 30. Can anyone point me at resources to find the births of their children and the death of Charles? -- Glen Johnson Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wmjohnson1832
