I am so excited to meet you! Christian, B: 1853, and killed by the train, is my GG Grandfather. My G Grandfather was his son, William Herman Christian Proefrock. My grandmother is still alive in N. Tonawanda and remembers when Christian was killed. It was the only time she remembers seeing her dad cry. I have a similar story from another newspaper. I look forward to interacting with you some more and sharing stories. I have more on my own database than what I put on Ancestry. July 8., 1935 Believed to have been struck by a southbound passenger train of the New York Central railroad's Niagara Falls branch at the Washington Street crossing, the lifeless body of Christian Proefrock, 74 years old of 44 Stenzil Street was found this afternoon in a ditch beside the railroad track. The body was badly mangled and was ordered removed to Hamp's funeral Home, In Adams street, by Coroner Jacob Helwig, who investigated the accident He said that there were Indications that the man was struck on the crossing and had been dead about an hour. It was learned that there is a Southbound train which passes over the New York Central tracks at that point at about noon and authorities believe that this train struck the man, its crew unaware of the accident. He is survived by his wife, Wilhelmina Proefrock: five sons, John, of Tonawanda. August, of St. Johnsburg, and Edward, William and George, of North Tonawanda: three daughters. Mrs. Philip Whittkopp and Mrs. Rudolph Blank, of Walmore. Mrs. Arnold (sic) (Otto) Weyers, of North Tonawanda; one brother. Author: audrap_1 Surnames: Proefrock, Seefeldt Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.niagara/3413/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am struggling with the parents of Christian Friedrick Proefrock, B: March 1853 in Wheatfield, Niagara NY; married to Wilhelmina Therese Seefeldt. Many people say his parents were Johann and Christine. But somehow I got my hands on a death certificate that says his dad was Christian: Death certificate: residence - 44 Stenzel for 12 years. profession - laborer in lumber yards. Last date he worked there was Oct 1924. He worked there for 20 years. (Note: Census data from 1900 and 1910 says he was a farmer) birthplace - Wheatfield Father - Christian (Note: previously thought the father's name was Johann) Mother - unknown from Germany informant - John W. Proefrock of 9 Fremont St., N. Ton., NY Undertaker - Fred Hamp Jr. of Tonawanda, NY Death occurred at 12:30 p.m. caused by "crushed legs and arms received by being struck by a train at Washington St. crossing N. Tonawanda, NY. There was no autopsy. Why would John (this is probably his first son, B: 1879) not know the mother's name? Maybe they had different mom's? I know from family stories that this IS my Christian, my great-great-grandfather, who died from the train. The only data I can find to support the father as Christian, versus Johann, is: 1860 Census: 1.) Christian Pefrock, age 45, B: Prussia, farmer Mary, age 29, B: Prussia (Is this the wife or the child?) John, age 10, B: NY, in school Augustus, age 8, B: NY, in school CHRISTIAN, age 7 (B: 1853), B: NY, in school Wilhemina, age 4, B: NY Anna, age 2, B: NY Wilhemina, age 6 mths, B: NY 2.) John Prefrock, age 48, farmer, B: Prussia Christena, age 42, B: Prussia Mary, age 12, B: NY William, age 11, B: NY Frederick, age 9, B: NY CHRISTIAN, age 7 (1853), B: NY I have census data on Christian's family (the Christian born in 1853 and married to Wilhelmina Therese Seefeldt) for 1990, 1910, 1920, and 1930. It's prior to that, when he's living with his parents, that I am unsure. Can anyone help me with any other information on Christian's parents and siblings?
