    3. Hi, this list site has been a tremendous help. I am in need of more assistance from somebody. John Kavanagh/Kavanaugh was born in Lockport in 1847. Parents are Michael and mother Mary Dolan. Does anyone have access to the 1850 census? I would like to see if the family is listed. Sincerely Jeff charvel@lemoorenet.com

    3. Dear Group, I kinda goofed up when I responded to Donald Stack about his Stack query and I apologize for having my response posted over and over to the list. But, hey, I just wanted to let him know that there are people here in Niagara County who still remember his grandfather and great-grandfather. vee

    1. Looking for info on Henry Nevin - 1825
    2. William R. Nevin
    3. Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Queries Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Niagara?read=58 Surname: Nevin ------------------------- I am looking for information on my Great, great grandfather Henry W. Nevin. Born near Lockport, New York in 1825. This is in Niagara County, New York. Died 1893 near Moundville, Alabama. Per 1880 Alabama census, his mother and father were born in Ireland. I don't know either of their names or when they entered the U.S. The only thing I have found and its "a long shot" is that he named his first child George Washington Nevin (1852). I have found a George Nevin in a New York City Passenger List Manifest for Nov 9, 1820 - ship was "Sarah" and he was a 38 year old farmer from Ireland. This would have made his birth in year 1782 when the real George Washington was still alive. I can imagine that an Irish family would name a son after such a newsworthy freedom fighter as Ireland of course was in political upheavel. The possibility of this man being Henry's father is enhanced (in my mind) by fact that there is a George W. Nevin listed in the New York 1820 census index for the New york City 3rd ward, page 88. This actual census is unavailable in my local. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could look at the actual census and provide me with all data there. I would like to see if age group for this man matches that for George Nevin mentioned above. Note that Henry's middle initial is "W". I can't find a George W. or just George in NY or surrounding states after 1820 census. Again, (in my mind) I suspose he possibly died before 1830 census and therefore Henry would have been 5 years old or less when father died. He just might have named his first child after the father he barely or never knew. Could someone tell me how to obtain or research known cemetery list in the area for a George or George W. or George Washington Nevin with a birth date about 1782 and death after 1824 ? Family story indicates that Henry (probaly a teenager) was sent to get some water for some ladies making a quilt and apparently didn't want to do that so he just kept on going. Story continues with belief that he went to sea for awhile before arriving in Alabama in 1848. He appears in Alabama 1850 census. Henry doesn't appear in any New York census by name and 1850 was the first year all members of house were listed by name. I have interviewed the 89 year old granddaughter of Henry's first child. She said that her father preferred the Catholic faith, so I suspect Henry was also inclined in that way. Perhaps his father was also and would be buried in Catholic cemetery. This lady had made a side trip to Lockport area in 1976 and ended up in small town of Eggertsville, NY close to Lockport. She didn't know what to look for. Found some Nevin graves, many without dates. She only remembered the name of Mary and said it had no date but appeared to be age of others dated so that she concluded that she could have been Henry's sister since named a child Mary. (very weak). Henry's other children were Sarah Rebecca, Daniel Webster, Julie Catherine, John Henry, Charles Alexander, Marcus Virgil, Piercy Fairfield, Dixon Hale, rukfus Stanton and Nancy Emma. I have complete family history from Henry to me and would of course be willing to share with anyone with possible connection. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Queries Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Niagara?read=57 Surname: ------------------------- Dear Donald, I grew up in Niagara Falls and the Stack name is familiar to me. This evening I called up an old high school classmate of mine, Bernie (Bernard) Stack and told him about your message. When I mentioned your grandfather Thomas, Bernie said Oh you remember Tommy, he used to live on Clifton Avenue! Oh THAT Tommy Stack! I sure DO remember him, he lived just a block away from me in the 1940s and both of us recall him vividly!! Your grandfather was only three years older than Bernie and I are! Now neither of us were aware that Tommy had died but even though he lived in Niagara Falls, he may not have died there. In this day and age people usually die in hospitals and he could well have died in St.Mary's Hospital in nearby Lewiston. Now I remember that Tommy had a sister named Ann but I don't know who she married. Bernie remembered that he also had a brother named John and that Tommy was the youngest of the family. Regarding your great-grandfather John Jack Stack who came from County Kerry, Bernie remembers him when he was an old man and Bernie figures that your two Stack families were related. Bernie says that the Stack family camed from Listowel, North Kerry, Ireland and that the area around there is LOADED with families by the name of Stack. In fact, there are mountains there that are called Stack Mountains. Bernie has gone back there a number of times. Bernie's father was Emmett J. Stack and his grandfather was John. Now if I can find out what Ann Stack's married name is, there's the possibility that I can put you in touch with your Stack family here. By the way, Bernie recognized the surname LAROUQUE. That's your grandmother's maiden name, isn't it? I hope I've "jump started" your heart this evening with all sorts of possibilities about finding your Stack roots. Bernie can still remember seeing Tommy and Red Donovan and Fran Fermoile cruising around in a convertible and raising cain! What do ya think? Vee Housman Youngstown, NY

    1. Surname loose ends - PRATT family & assoc lines
    2. Hello everyone, long message here. I have several families I'm researching in Niagara County, NY. I've been reviewing "status" and decided to send this to you folks with a list of "loose ends"! Hoping that either some of these names will ring a bell with some of you.. or one of you may know of a source I could go check to fill in some of the blanks. Hope my narrative style is not too confusing.... By all means, let me know if another method would be more effective! I'm going to send some other msgs over the weekend here - on some of the other "family groupings". Maybe I'll meet up with some new cousins out there! debbie CAhobbies@aol.com > PRATT family: starting with VT PRATT generation that came to NY... Nathan PRATT and wife Anne (LAY) arrived from northern VT to Niagara County ca 1817. Nathan served in the Rev War for VT and their 8 (or 9) children were born from abt 1797 to 1815 in VT. [Children: George W, Timothy (m Fanny __?__ - has children in NY and dies in MI), Calvin, Asa, David, John (had children in NY?), Lois?, Mary Ann (m John Taylor HOLMES & dies in MI), and maybe another child?] Their son Calvin is my direct line. I am unsure when Nathan & Anna came over to NY, but I do know there is reference to his getting land in Niagara Co in 1817 and is in the NY census by 1820. Hoping for further info on children's links to Nathan and Anna via probate records for Nathan in MI. (Jackson Co) --- The son: Calvin PRATT (Sr) was born 15 June 1800 in Georgia, VT. He married Samantha HAWKS (when and where I do not know!). They had 3 children - all born in Niagara Co, NY: Maryanna b 1829 (m William S BURNETT?), Lorenzo N b 1833 (m Mary Jane STICKLES) and Asa J. in 1836. Their son Asa is my direct line. (Their son Lorenzo (Asa's brother) was in the Civil War and there is a monument in Wilson, NY for the "horse" (Billy Sherman) he stole from the Rebels!). Calvin and Samantha are buried in Greenwood Cemetery and died in 1878 and 1888 respectively. There are records for a Calvin PRATT in the 1895-1896 Niagara Co Directory regarding land on Youngstown Rd in 1834 and in the 1869 Niagara Co Directory about another 9 acre lot. The Wilson Sketchbook (vol I) has a "Mr & Mrs Pratt" on list organizing the Sabbath School in 1820 and on another page a Calvin Pratt on the list of those giving money for the Wilson Collegiate Institute. I have Calvin's will with an 1878 date... showing a "wife Samantha".. but no surname. Questions on this family set: 1) Samantha HAWKS was supposedly born in 1804 "in CT". When and where did she and this Calvin PRATT marry? 2) How might I verify the birthdates of the three children? Since they couple was perhaps the one involved in that early church.. and the children are born after that.. might there be baptism records available? ----- Asa J PRATT was born 1836 in Wilson, NY. He married Lovina/Lavina BURNETTE. They had 9 children from abt 1858 to 1876 - all theoretically born in Wilson, NY. The children: Ruth Lillian (m a MULHOLLAND?), Newell (m Rosa __?__, Loretta, Ida V (m John HAMILTON), Calvin Lewis, Hester, Samantha Jr, Juliet and Mary. Lovina is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, but there is no stone for Asa. (the funeral home of Hamilton and Clark thinks perhaps an "unmarked grave" next to her is for him?) Asa is named in his father Calvin's will as receiving a watch from him. Questions on this family: 1) Lovina BURNETTE. Supposedly born in 1837 (in NY). IGI reference to parents: William BURNETTE and a Hester FOOTE??? 2) Need marriage VR for Asa J PRATT and Lovina BURNETTE. 3) Is Asa PRATT really in the "unmarked grave" at Greenwood Cemetery? (interesting loose ends, yes?) 4) When did Asa and Lovina die? I have only "after 1886" and "after 1910" for them each respectively at this point. 5) Also want to verify (church records?) the birthdates of the children. Going from census, Pratt Directory, funeral home and tombstone information right now. ----- Calvin Lewis PRATT was born 08 Feb 1867 in Wilson, NY. He married Ella S HOSMER (d of Charles HOSMER and Isabel M MILLER). They had 1 child in 1889 who did not survive and another: Marian Bell PRATT. Calvin died in 1956 and his wife earlier in 1902. Both are again at Greenwood Cemetery. Questions about this family: 1) When and where did Calvin PRATT and Ella HOSMER marry? The funeral home record (Hamilton & Clark) lists Ella HOSMER as his deceased wife... but that's all I have... Thinking the marriage would have been "bef 1889"??? ----- Marian Bell PRATT was born 15 Aug 1893 in Wilson, NY. She married Edward SMITH (1921) and settled in Newfane, NY. They had twin sons - one who moved to CT and is now deceased (my father) - and the other still living in Niagara Co, NY. (I was born in Lockport and moved to CT when I was three years old...) ----- And there you have it! Maybe this will get some conversations going here on the Niagara Co list! Later? will come back with HOSMER message... then KRUEGER... then SCHMIDT/SMITH. Thanks for reading! debbie CAhobbies@aol.com

    3. Chris, Regarding the early settlement of Niagara County, I have a feeling that initially it had more to do with the Holland Land Company's opening up the area to settlers with their offer of land to sell at a reasonable price at around 1800. The land that was offered was west of the Genesee River which was west of Seneca County and in the area along Lake Ontario the land was rich and furtile and small settlements grew up prior to the War of 1812. After the devastation of the War, many of the original settlers returned and after that, more and more settlers came in. The building of the Erie Canal certainly played an important part in the increasing number of settlers, but the fact that your family settled in Olcott, on the shores of Lake Ontario, my guess is that they settled there because of the land. Regarding getting a copy of a Leonard will of the 1950s, there's an easy but EXPENSIVE way to go about it. The Niagara County Surrogate's Court will copy it for you and mail it to you for the price of $70 (or $75?). I know that it's an excessive price but that's the price that was mandated they have to charge if they have to find the will, copy it and mail it to you. The only other alternative you have is to find a researcher in this area who will go to the court house, copy the will for $1.00 per page and mail it to you. And as much as I would like to do that for you, it would be too much of an effort for me. I've got an Inbox that's jammed full of queries that I'm desparately trying to answer. And they're gaining on me! :-) Hope this helps and good luck in your research.
