Vee, Several things of note in your last message - I have learned again! (thank you!) 1) Those who went to Canada did not do so to "escape" the War of 1812. They may have simply "gone there" (in this case from VT)... "just because"! Then when the war looked imminent... they might have been drafted "there" by the British! Ah ha! So it makes sense that my Nathan Pratt, from Rev War, would not want that... and would come into the US - either back to VT.. or in my case... down into Niagara Co, NY ok... I can visualize that.. thanks for the scenario. 2) As for ages... I have conflicting information on the birthdate for Nathan Pratt. Looks to be ca 1761-1765. In the 1850 MI census, he shows as "age 85". DAR records vary and nara doesn't have his military records.. have to go to state of VT for them. So for 1812 - 1815 - looks like he would have been 47-50 yrs old? Still "works" for when children were born, etc.. although I now question the "place" on a couple of them... Now that I think about it, there were folks "earlier" in time... who "served" in "train bands" / local militia and held titles like captain or lieut and they were certainly not all "young" men! Guess it really came down to "able-bodied" and "able to protect" in villages and towns...not serve if in your 20s.... 3) Fascinating information on the "closeness" of Canada and Youngstown! Someday I am going to go missing and folks are going to find me buried under a slew of maps! Need to look at them again... VT, Canada, western NY... and how it fits together.... 4) Other maps... on the list to get the set for 1860. You are right.. I heard it here and I am anxious to see them! (who needs the lottery? just send maps with lot numbers and names on them!) 5) I've also learned now about recognizing fraternal organizations... abbreviations in this case. There was a lodge name and number... followed by F & A M. This is the Masons, not the Odd Fellows. Got it. Thanks. 6) HOSMER family? Yes. Have just sent a separate e:mail on that family. So, family informaton - geographic information - migration information - ages for being in the military - fraternal organization information - a "lot"!!! Once again, thank you. debbie CAhobbies@aol.com (ate jelly beans too...)
Hello Everyone... back again.. this time with my HOSMER family. (and a special note to Vee... "yes" I have HOSMER family in Niagara County... and a copy of the 3-volume set of The Hosmer Heritage... and "still" some loose ends on the direct line... and have been finding out about many of the collateral lines over this past year....). I even have my PRATT family we've been talking about and this HOSMER line meeting up! So... here we go... This line comes from Thomas HOSMER (brother to James HOSMER).. who arrived from ENG into MA.. then became one of the founders of Hartford, CT.. with Rev Hooker.. in 1636. My line comes down several generations in Hartford Co, CT and finally winds up with Stephen HOSMER (1703/4 - 1761) m to Deliverance GRAVES (1713 - 1758). They had 13 children that I know of.. and from them.. the NY story evolves.... (the children were: Sarah, Stephen, Marrianne, Titus, George, Anne, Deliverance, Timothy, Esther, John, Prentice, Mary and Graves.) The children were born from 1731 to 1756. Of those children: I know that Titus m Lydia LORD and remained in CT - in Middletown. Timothy m Elizabeth SMITH and moved to Avon, Livingston Co, NY, although this was after all the children were born.. in Farmington, CT. I believe I hail from the youngest child above: Graves HOSMER. Graves was b 1756 in Hartford, CT... in Rev War out of New London, CT.. (have his military/pension files) ... m to Amy CONGDON (yet I still haven't found the marriage VR in CT..) ... they had 4 children in CT (Prentice, Sylvester, Titus W and Clarissa)... then moved to Avon, Livingston Co, NY... where other HOSMER family was already residing. He had more children there.. (Delia, Maria, James and Stephen). (Have found out about the Hosmer Inn now at the museum, etc...). From Avon, NY over to Niagara County: Of those, I know Prentice (m Helen HENRY), Sylvester and Titus W (m Helen ???) came over to Niagara Co, NY. Prentice was b in 1790 and d 1846 in Porter, NY. Titus W was b 1796 and d 1866 in Wilson, NY. I am descended from Sylvester, b 1794 and d 1873. He m Rebecca KITTREDGE / KITRAGE. Rebecca b 17 Mar 1800 "in VT"? (another loose end here...who were her parents & where was she born?) ----- Sylvester HOSMER and Rebecca KITTREDGE had 8 children: Maria, James E (d young), John (m Harriet Newell DWIGHT), Stephen (m Angeline ASH), Sarah (m Edmund CASE), Samuel C, Jane and Charles - born between 1820 and 1841. Once again, I have no VRs for any of these births (or for the marriage of Sylvester & Rebecca). Sylvester and Rebecca are buried together at Greenwood Cemetery and five of their children are named in Sylvester's estate papers. They died in 1873 and 1880 respectively. ----- Of the 8 children, I descend from the youngest: Charles HOSMER b 1841 in Wilson, NY. He m Isabel M MILLER (aka Libby and aka Elizabeth). She was b in 1844. I have her NY death certificate and know little abt her parents except maybe her father was a "John" Miller? They had just one child: Ella S HOSMER. Charles died in 1923 and Isabel in 1926. ----- Ella S HOSMER, b 1865 in Wilson -- m Calvin Lewis PRATT (b 1865 in Wilson)... and here we have come full circle to my great-grandparents... and the meeting of the PRATT and HOSMER lines. Again, still need marriage VR. Church records are going to be the way to go for that, I guess... (just have to figure out which churches!!) They died in 1902 and 1956 respectively. Here it goes over to the PRATT name... and the marriage of their daughter Marian Bell PRATT to Edward Smith. So, I have family scenarios - cemetery records - some probate - death certificates for more recent deathdates - census - some secondary sources like the Hosmer Heritage books - and "holes" in the middle for the births, marriages, etc. I do know of Holland Land Company deeds (2) in the 1830s and (2) in the 1850s for Sylvester HOSMER.... and he is also mentioned in the Wilson Sketchbook as being a contributor for the Wilson Collegiate Institute. [This is where both he and the senior Calvin PRATT were on the same list!] See anyone familiar? Have any sources I should be checking? Thanks again for reading! debbie CAhobbies@aol.com
I know absolutely nothing about the PRATT lines (so don't ask me more :)) but when looking for my Stevens family who may have come from CT to VT to Niagara Co to Knox Co, OH, I have seen referrences to Pratts around New Milford CT in 1770s so you may want to try there. There seems to have been some kind of migration after the Rev War from CT to VT to NY to OH and directly from CT to OH. Would like to know more about the migration patterns myself!!! Vee, I was very interested in your comment on the settlement of Niagara Co. as my Stevens and McLaughlin families were there at least by the 1840s if not earlier--probably coming from VT or even Canada. I was wondering if you could recommend any good histories of early Niagara County for those of us not familiar with the area. Sara Patton > Regarding the early settlement of Niagara County, I have a feeling that > initially it had more to do with the Holland Land Company's opening up the area > to settlers with their offer of land to sell at a reasonable price at around > 1800. Debbie, > Your information puts him going to Canada to > escape the War of 1812 and settling in Wilson, NY in 1815. No, I don't believe that's true--re his going to Canada to ESCAPE the War of 1812. I believe he went to Canada BEFORE the war started and then found that he would have to fight on the side of the British against the Americans and that's why he escaped being drafted into service by the British and fled to Wilson. > Nathan had served in the Revolutionary War for VT... would he really have > been drafted for the War of 1812 at his age? (this just goes to show how > many things there are to learn at once as we piece our ancestor's lives > together!) I don't know what British/Canadian laws were at the time but it's possible that every man under the age 50 or so had to at least be a member of the militia. When Nathan served in the Rev. War, he might have been as young as 16. The War lasted until 1783. If he had been 16 at the end of the war, he would have been born around 1767. In 1812 he would have been 45 years old. You mentioned that he and Amy started their family around 1797. So you see the pieces fit if you jiggle them a bit. You posed the question about his and his family's trek from Vermont [to Canada] to Niagara Co. First regarding his/their move to Canada. That was commonplace in those early years. Good cheap land was to be had in Canada and that's probably why they moved there. That doesn't mean they moved up into the far north; it could have been as close as Newark, Ontario (present day Niagara-on-the-Lake) right across the Niagara River from Youngstown. Newark is so close to Youngstown that many years ago in the winter when the lower Niagara River would jam up solid with ice, they could have actually walked across the river to the United States. Nathan could have first scouted out the area in Canada for the right piece of land and then went back to Vermont to pick up his family and brought them eventually here. > Lot 82 is just east of the village and on the 1860 map I > have it > shows C. Pratt on the Youngstown Rd. >> > > -->> What 1860 map do you have? It shows the names of residents / > landowners on it? Is it possible to purchase such a map somewhere? NY Queries Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Niagara?read=60 Surname: Gould, Hodgins ------------------------- I am looking for information on the Goulds of the Middleport area of Niagara County. Dates of birth from early 1800's through mid 1900's. Siblings William, John & Mary Ann are believed to have come from England circa 1850. William's children were William Jr. & John Henry. William Jr.'s children were Anna Laura, Mary Ellen, Rosamond Belle, and Minnie. John Henry owned Gould's Greenhouses. John Henry's children were Tillie, Louis, Lola Katherine and Charles John. I have found many of these Goulds in the Hartland Central Cemetery, and Mary A., wife of Philip PENFOLD in LeValley Cemetery on Pearson Rd, Middleport. Some surnames by marriage are OSMONT (or OSMOND), HODGINS, FAIRBARN, PENFOLD, BAYNE, DEWEY, ULRICH. Mary Ellen, born in Niagara County, was my great-grandmother. She married John Hodgins of Gwillimbury, Ontario, Canada, but I have no clue as to how they got together. It is quite possible that some relations settled in Canada.
The Niagara County Sheriff's Dept. site (http://www.ncsd.com/ncsd-history.htm) reports that one of the commissioners who put the county seat in Lockport in 1822 was Abraham KYSER, Jr. of Schoharie County. Has anyone come across his direct (or lateral) descendants in their research? (In those days, the name could also have been spelt KEYSER, KISER, KAYSER, et al.) Cheers, Ron Kyser

Dear Group, I just realized what went wrong with the response I tried to send to Donald Stack that ended up on the list a couple of times and I thought I would share it with you. I had forgotten that Ellen Seebacher, our List Administrator, had told us about a week ago that queries that are posted to the Rootsweb GenConnect message boards site for Niagara County at Http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Niagara are automatically posted to our Niagara Co. mailing list. And when any of us wants to respond to the person who originally posted the query and we see that the message starts out with "Posted on Niagara Co. NY Queries Board URL . . . " we should click on the URL and respond to it via the GenConnect board. That way the message will get back to the person who originally posted the query and the response will automatically be posted back to our mailing list so that we can all benefit from it. What I had done was to just post back to our mailing list. Donald never received it because he isn't a list subscriber and from there I just tried . . . well, you know the rest! :-) Just when I thought I had this whole Internet and email thing down pat! (sigh!) Happy Easter! May you all be up to your belly beans in jelly buttons tomorrow! :-) vee

Incidentally, several JOHANS(S)ONs are listed in an index, posted at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychauta/HISTORY/SwJames.htm>, to the book _Saga from the Hills: a History of the Swedes of Jamestown, NY_. I don't know if this will help you, but it may be worth a look. If you run into trouble, please write back to me privately, in English or Swedish, and I'll try to help you further. Debbie, Regarding your Pratt family who settled in Wilson. You said > I am unsure when Nathan & Anna came over to NY [from VT], but I do know there > is > reference to his getting land in Niagara Co in 1817 and is in the NY census > by 1820. This is what was written about Nathan in "Landmarks of Niagara County, NY" edited by William Pool, 1897, Section I, page 307, regarding the early settlers of Wilson. "With the outbreak of the war [of 1812] immigration almost wholly ceased for about three years, but was actively renewed in1815-16. . . Henry Barber and Nathan Pratt left Canada to escape the draft and in1815 settled in Wilson, the former on lot 89 and the latter on lot 7." In other words, Nathan was living in Canada at the time of the War of 1812 and came to Wilson to escape being drafted into the British service. Lot 7 was directly south of the village of Wilson. On page 308 of the same volume it says, "Among other prominent residents of Wilson, past and present may be mentioned: . . . Calvin Pratt and son Lorenzo N. on lot 82 ..." Lot 82 is just east of the village and on the 1860 map I have it shows C. Pratt on the Youngstown Rd. In the biographical section of the book, Section III, page 138, it gives a biographical sketch of Lorenzo. It says: "Pratt, Lorenzo N., was born in Wilson, NY, June 3, 1833, a son of Calvin, a son of Nathan Pratt, a native of Vermont, who came to Wilson in the very early day and took up land, where he lived and died. Calvin Pratt took up 100 acreas on the town line and also had100 acres in another location. His wife was Samantha, daughter of Joesph Hawks, one of the first settlers of Wilson; she was a teacher there for many years. He died in1883 and his widow in 1885. Lorenzo N. Pratt was reared on a farm and educated in Wilson Collegiate Institute, and has always been a farmer in Wilson. In 1856 he married Mary J. Stickles of Newfane, and they had four children; Annette (deceased), Glenn, Jennie and Calvin (deceased). Mr. Pratt is a member of Ontario LodgeNO. 376, F. & a. M.,and of the Peter Porter Post No. 126, G. A. R. In1861 he enlisted in Co. M., 1st NY Artillery, and served three years and nine months. He rode one horse two years and brought him home with him to his farm and used him until 1895, when he was thirty-two years old; Mr. Pratt then buried him on the old homestead and on his grave waves the red, white and blue. He was with Sherman while on the march to the sea; his position was bugler, and he was in nineteen general engagements." It then lists the battles he fought in. Debbie, regarding your Asa being buried in an unmarked grave, I believe that the funeral home of Hamilton and Clark is right when they told you that in their opinion the unmarked plot next to Lovina's is where he is actually buried. What tends to happen with families is when the first spouse dies, the one remaining makes certain that an inscribed tombstone is put on the grave. But when the other one dies, it's then left up to the collective children to get together, pool their money, and finally get around to putting up a tombstone. That doesn't always happen. I hope the above helps you with your family search. But, hey, Debbie, don't I know you? CAhobbies@aol.com is a very familiar email address! vee

> Mary M. McIntyre died 1/19/? She was buried in Wildwood cemetery. > The cem. is located in either Lyons Falls or Lockport, NY. She was > survived by her husband Joseph O. McIntyre. She died at her son Richard > McIntyre's home in Lockport. She was also survived by several sons and > daughters. All of this information was gleaned from an undated newspaper > Obit. Also, it doesn't tell me what paper. I Need the DOB and DOD for > both Mary and Joseph. I am guessing that they are both buried in the > same cemetery. Dan, two research approaches come to mind: 1. Check the LDS card file of indexed deaths in Niagara County: "Vital record card index of Niagara County, New York" (8 microfilm rolls, arranged alphabetically by last name). You can order a couple of these rolls from the middle of the alphabet, and examine them at your nearest Family History Center. 2. If your MCINTYREs died between 1890 and 1920, you could use the census to narrow down *when* (were both alive, say, in 1900, then Joseph a widower in 1910?), and then request a ten-year search of death certificates from the New York State Department of Health. You may also want to check the MCINTYREs listed on Maureen Higgins Seifert's page <http://members.aol.com/Moecow/earlyfamstories.html>, "Stories of Niagara County People".
