Genealogy mailing lists are famous for inacurate subject lines. Rather than flaming or nasty attacks you might like to nicely remind people who are "offenders" by sending them the link to a short article about the importance of subject lines, which is at . http://www.epinions.com/cmd-review-191-38F66E8-390DECB2-prod4 Hopefully this will help make the point without offending anyone. :^) your fellow researcher, Susan Susan McMackin Reynolds in Lewes DE, "the first town in the first state" Connect to me & others at the Surname Genealogy Web Project at http://www.PlanetAll.com/main.asp?cid=966275&gid=114084&s=194

(and I have SCHMIDTs to write about yet.... also in that same > cemetery...) OK, this is what I'm getting at. You mention burials at North Ridge Cemetery in Town of Cambria And then you mention church records from there. I have a feeling that the cemetery and the church you're talking about is St. Peter's Lutheran Church which is right next to North Ridge Cemetery. Several years ago on a blistering hot day I took a quick look around St. Peter's cemetery and managed to get back into some air conditioning before I passed out. After I got back home, I wrote down some of the family names that I had noted on the tombstones. Among them where, in order of writing them down, of the names you mentioned there were Hillman, Ganantz, Schmidt and Krueger. By the way, there are also Haussman graves there but they're not my family--they're from Mecklenburg, Germany, where most of the local Germans came from. However, the local family agreed to adopt my sister and I about 10 years ago when we felt that we needed a Haussmann family nearby! Maybe you could let the list know how to obtain records from the St. Peter's church. I hesitate to call the pastor and the church is a full 20 minutes drive when where I live. :-) Hey, it's in Town of Cambria and I"m in Town of Porter. vee

Yes, he ("Earle") and Charlotte are on the Town of Porter 1850 census (no doubt Village of Youngstown) as follows: Earle, 42, VT, Carpenter Charlotte, 32 [born 1818], NY Wesley A., 9, NY Erial, 8, NY Eleanor [?], 1, NY In the same household was the family of William H. Doyle, 43, Canada, merchant, and his wife Sarah F., 38, VT, with their children. I have no record of her or her Anderson sons. > Any links to this couple or information about Stevens/Stephens or McLaughlin > families living in Niagara Co, NY during this period will be MOST appreciated > as this is a major brick wall for me!! Regarding MCLAUGHLIN, we had two McLaughlin families living in Town of Porter early on. They were John F. and Ephraim, both farmers. In fact part of the land that I presently own on Creek Road (Lot 25) was purchased by John from the Holland Land Co. He finally obtained the deed to the property on 11 March 1837. He had purchased 91 acres. Pool's "Landmarks of Niagara Co." states that John settled in the town in 1815 and came over from Canada. He and his brother(?) Ephraim lived in this area and were members of the Board of Trustees of School District No. 3--John from 1824-1852, and Ephraim from 1838-1850. John and family show up on the 1820 census. He was over 45 [born prior to 1775] and in his household was a female under the age of 10 [born 1811-1820]. On the 1830 census John is age 60-70 [born 1761-1770] and there is a female age 10-15 [born 1816-1820]. On the 1840 census is both John and Ephraim. John is now only 30-40 years old [born1801-1810]. He's probably John Jr. and he shows up on earlier census in an appropriate age group. Ephraim is 70-80 [born 1761-1770]. There is no Stevens/Stephens family on the 1840 census. In the 1850 census there are both John Jr. and Ephraim who is now only 37 [born 1813], probably Ephraim, Jr. Both John Jr. and Ephraim Jr. were born in Canada. I find no records of the burials of John and Ephraim, Sr. Sara, since there is evidence that your Charlotte McLaughlin may have been the daughter of John who came here from Canada, that would be the best place for you to look. Once again, the migration pattern repeats itself. From New England to Canada to Niagara County and then further west. Good luck in your research. vee

Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Niagara?read=66 Surname: Stevens, McLaughlin ------------------------- I'm looking for the parents or siblings of Arnold Stevens and Charlotte McLaughlin who married and lived in Niagara Co, NY ca 1835-1855--probably earlier. I've been told Arnold (and Charlotte) were listed in the 1850 census as "Earle" but I don't have access to NY records so haven't been able to confirm. Also that he purchased Lot #30 in Youngstown NY on Oct 22, 1843 for $150 and sold it to Peter Tower on Mar 5, 1855 for $600. Also sold 1/2 of lot #32 in 4th range in Youngstown of Sept 16, 1854 for $300. He was a carpenter. Charlotte McLaughlin Stevens died in Niagara Co (probably Youngstown) in 1855 and was buried there with other infant children who died young. Have no idea what cemetery. After Charlotte McLaughlin Stevens died in 1855, Arnold Stevens moved to Knox Co, OH where other relatives lived. Census records there show he was born in VT in 1806. So I know he started out in VT, moved to Niagara Co (around Youngstown, I think), married and had several children, and left for OH ca 1855 where he lived with an Edward Beach, also from NY. An infant daughter, Ida Stevens, stayed in NY to be raised by relatives, married an Anderson and had sons Frank Anderson and William Anderson. Children of this couple were: Wesley Erial Elinor Ida Any links to this couple or information about Stevens/Stephens or McLaughlin families living in Niagara Co, NY during this period will be MOST appreciated as this is a major brick wall for me!! Thanks! Sara Patton
Debbie, Ellen and all, I'm so glad that both of you spent the time and effort to update our list with your findings. Debbie, you left me breathless when you said that an original 1897 copy of "Landmarks . . ." is for sale for $350! I have one of the original editions and that's what I have been quoting from!! It was actually GIVEN to me by a member of our historical society only because he felt that it MIGHT interest me!! Regarding Turner's "Pioneer History of the Holland Purchase of Western New York" in the paperback version, today I called my dear friend Pete, owner of The Book Corner in Niagara Falls, to check on its price and availability. Even though it was reprinted in 1974, it is now out of print and unavailable. Regarding "History of Northwestern New York" by Horton, Williams and Douglas, I have the three volume set that was publishedin 1947. Frankly, again, I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't carefully studied the historical aspect of it, but I do know that Volume III contains genealogy of the families that were/are located here in the '40s. In fact, it kinda makes me giggle when I see that it lists some of their children who I went to school with and who I still keep in touch with. Regarding Donald Loker and his "News of the Day," Oh Lordy, Don is such a sweetheart!! He's a member of our Town of Porter Historical Society and on a monthly basis he brings to our meetings clippings out of old newspapers that have to do with our area. That's what I base our monthly newletter on--I'm the editor of the newsletter. Check out the Niagara GenWeb site regarding the latest April edition of the newsletter at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyniagar/extras/portnews.htm I hope that I will be able to send Ellen the missing editions of the newsletters so that she can post them all to the site. Don has also written other books and as Ellen suspects, other books have also been written--hot off the press at this moment--about the history of this area. If any of you are interested in books on any particular aspect of Niagara County history--Niagara Falls, Dare Devils, geology, Love Canal, whatever--just let me know and I'll call good old Pete and ask him what is available. And on a modest note, if any of you are interested in a book of stories about the history of the Town of Porter written for fourth grade students, entitled, "It Happened Just Down the Road," just let me know. I wrote the book! The local school teachers use it to teach the kids about local history. It covers stories about the French and Indian War, to the War of 1812 to the Gold Rush of 1849, to the Civil War and to the "present day" of 1912 in the Town of Porter. After all, from where I sit at the moment, all of the history of our area happened "just down the road." vee
