Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Niagara?read=96 Surname: Robinson, Osborn ------------------------- Thanks. No, She did not die in Niagara Co. NY. She is only buried there, according to the obit. She died in Exeter, Otsego Co. NY. She was the bride by about 6 weeks of Newell Yale Robinson. According to the obit she had a heart attack, and was from Niagara Falls, where they were married about 6 weeks before her death. We did not even know Newell had been married to this woman, until last year when we found the obit in the belongings of my husbands mother, who was married to Newell for a few years before his untimely death in 1949. What a shock to find this out!!! My mother in law passed in 1999, never having revealed this to her children. MY husband and I will be traveleing thru Niagara Falls on June 19 to Pa. and would like to stop and take a picture of the grave stone, if there is one. I understand that Ms. Osborn Robinson was from a prominent family of the time around the Niagara Falls, Niagara Co. NY area. Thanks again. Beryl

Hello My first question is if anyone might be able to look for a Joseph GORVETT on the 1860 NY federal census pg. 948 for Lockport, Niagra... My second is unrelated to Niagra but being as it is so closely related to Ontario, perhaps someone might have the answer. I have tried to located Ontario Canada census films thru LDS library but it seems to be spotty at best, only a few towns here and there (I have looked on the index on-line at the Canadian archives, and would like to borrow the filmed transcripts for more in-depth info). I know that lists exist for the areas in Ontario but if I subscribe to another my poor computer will get really crabby at me! Thanks for any input on these 2 questions! There were 3 Edson families there then, James, Nathaniel, and Abijah. Only Abijah had a daughter of the right age to have been Aurilla. Dear Ann Marie and all, IMMIGRATION RECORDS: Regarding immigrants from Canada crossing over the bridge at Niagara Falls to the states, I can't find evidence of immigration records that may have been kept prior to 1902 around here. I did check the INS website at http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/index.htm and found that records are available for the Niagara Falls port of entry from 1902 and for Lewiston port of entry from 1903. By the way, the bridge they probably crossed was the Suspension Bridge that was opened to pedestrians and "vehicles" in 1848. It was the first bridge that connected Niagara Falls to Canada. NATURALIZATION RECORDS: While we're on the subject, a number of you have asked questions about how to obtain naturalization records here in Niagara County. Send a letter (with SASE) to: County Clerk Niagara County Courthouse 175 Hawley St. Lockport, NY 14094 Give your ancestor's name and his approximate date of naturalization, if possible. The clerk will check to see if she can find him and if they have a record on him they will Xerox a copy of the page and send it to you. They will include an invoice in the amount of $1.00 per page copied. They have the naturalization records from 1836 to the 1970s. I hope this has been of help. Dear Group, It looks like I'm up and running at warp speed! After some recent heartburn and raised blood pressure, I'm now on line through our local cable company. Hopefully, my ISP problems have been resolved. Although I will keep my Prodigy account active for about the next month, please note my new preferred email address, housman@adelphia.net. I will try to contact as many people as I can to let them know the new address; however, I know that there are people out there who I haven't corresponded with for years. And you know how that is, tomorrow someone will try my old email address and won't be able to reach me. So if anyone writes to you to ask if you know how to reach me, feel free to let them know my new address. Hopefully, after all the ISP disasters I've been experiencing recently, I'll be able to contribute more to this list. Vee Housman Youngstown, NY
Dear Group, I have been attempting to send this message to both Steve Litwin and the rest of you but I have had severe ISP problems and it seems that this message won't reach Steve directly. Nonetheless, I thought the rest of you might benefit from my response to him. Whatever! -) vee Dear Steve, I'm responding to your query about the Fort Niagara Cemetery that was forwarded to the Niagaa Co. genealogy mailing list. The cemetery is what we refer to as the War of 1812 Cemetery and you're right in that it is on the grounds outside Old Fort Niagara. Over the more recent years which included WWI, there was the Army base of Fort Niagara with all of the wooden barracks of which included the WWII prisoners of war compound. Of note, I remember those war years and the compound. But since then then the base has been disestablished and the wooden barracks were torn down. However, the sturdy brick buildings still remain. Of particular note is the Officers Club that still remains, complete with the murals that were painted on its walls. One mural of special importance is the one that was painted by a WWII German prisoner of war. He recently returned---over 50 years later-- to view it and I met him at the reception that was given in his honor. Now what did you want to know about the cemetery at the fort that is about a 5 minute drive from my house? vee ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve Litwin <litwin@clarityconnect.com> To: <NYNIAGAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 12, 2000 7:34 AM Subject: Fort Niagara cemetery > Posted on: Niagara Co. Beryl, I'm replying to your query that was posted on the Niagara Co. GenWeb site and I'm also sending this to the Niagara Co. Genealogy Mailing list where your query was forwarded. Regarding cemeteries in the area of Niagara Falls, you can find that information on the Niagara Co. site at http://hometown.aol.com/Moecow/niagfls.html If your Luella Osborn Robinson died in ca 1940 in the imediate area of Niagara Falls, my guess is that she's buried in Oakwood Cemetery on Portage Road in Niagara Falls. My second guess is Niagara Falls Memorial Park in the area of the suburb of Lewiston. In both cases those cemeteries have caretaker offices who could tell you if she is buried there. In addition, the History Dept. of the Niagara Falls Public Library might help you find her obituary in the local papers that they have on microfilm. When you get to this area, just look up the address of the library in the phone book. It's located on Main St. in Niagara Falls. The cemetery phone numbers are also in the local phone book. Also check Riverdale Cemetery in Lewiston, address and phone number in the phone book. Good luck in your research. Visiting ancestors' graves is a marvelous and grand emotional experience. If you need my help, let me know. I'm here in nearby Youngstown.
