Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Niagara?read=117 Surname: Gallagher, Devlin ------------------------- Am looking for my grgrgrandmother, Mary Gallagher, born RI 1850 or 51. Father was Wm Gallagher. All I have is her marriage certificate 1868 in IL stating that her father, Wm who lived in NY state gave authority to a David Murphy to give permission for her to marry. She had one son 1869 and is on 1870 IL census. By 1880 census she no longer lives there but son (11yo) does. Later found out that the son was raised by one of his aunts and that Mary died (not sure where) early on and was buried back east. Maybe NY? Back then could they ship a body from IL to NY? Maybe she died in NY and husband brought son back to IL before 1880 census. What a mystery! Can anyone help? Thanks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In reply to a post a while back regarding the migration of many New Yorkers to Michigan: The following is taken from an article written by historian Dorothy Mitts in her weekly column "Where the Wild Goose Flies" published in the Port Huron (Michigan) Times Herald: (undated; extraction by Kay Mitchell) "About this time (1830's) the fever of land speculation was spreading...nowhere was western land speculation more violent than in New York State, where it was known as 'Michigan Fever.'"

And thanks to the folks who've been writing with suggestions for the site over the past few weeks! I haven't made real changes for a month because of difficulties with my hands, but I expect to do some soon. Any links/information you can point me to will be gratefully received! Hi Listers, Is anyone researching the "CHASE" families of Hartland, Newfane, Lockport, etc. vicinity? If so, I would be interested in corresponding with them. I have been researching all of them. Primariliy interested in 1800 to 1870. My line moved between Niagara Co. and Genesee/Monroe Co. I research the collateral lines as if they were direct, looking for positive proofs of the identity of the "CHASE" groups. I am from Niagara Falls, NY and return every summer to continue the search. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Dolores Gunn Apple Valley, CA
Dear Group -- From the book "Landmarks of Niagara Co., NY" I learned my gg-gfather Francis B. LANE was a founding trustee of the Middleport Methodist Church in 1827. The only Methodist Church I find listed today for Middleport is the United Methodist Church at 5 Park Ave. Does anyone know if these 2 churches are one & the same? I didn't find a link for Middleport or for churches on the Niagara Co. GenWeb page --- Thanks for any info you have! Nancy Venable nbvena22@worldnet.att.net

Vee, thank you so much for the history of Wilson. I really appreciate the bits of history. I wonder what the attraction to so may NY people to Michigan was! In the early 1840's my Wilkinson line seemed to came to Michigan along with a Benedict family and a Packard family all from NY. Packard family was Simeon Packard m: to Julia Roaker and F. Hudson Benedict and wife Caroline. They settled very near each other in Ionia county, MI. Pat Wilson Scott ----- Original Message ----- From: Vee L. Dear Group, Forgive me if this turns out to be the second time you receive this message but I haven't yet seen it come up on our list yet in spite of seeing a subsequent message I sent very recently show up. And I'll also apologize for re-posting the next message I sent to the list because it, too, hasn't shown up yet. Both messages were posted over two hours ago. vee May 24, 2000 In the episode that I watched this evening of the videotape interview of Cora Gushee, Danny and she discussed their favorite subject, the history of the Presbyterian Church of Youngstown. Danny questioned her about Ashbel G. (or C.) Hinman. It was obvious that they had discussed him in the past regarding the church history-and Danny has made a videotape of that history. He lead her to talk about Ashbel and she said that he had come here as a young man, 19 years old, in 1819, along with his sister Henrietta Hinman. [In the 1820 census of Town of Porter he is shown as head of household, age 16-26-born between 1795 and 1804-and the only other member of the household was a female, age 10-16-born between 1805 and 1810.] He was appointed the second postmaster of Youngstown that we had and it's possible that he came here with that appointment already in hand. There are no records here that show where he and his sister came from nor who their parents were. He was apparently an educated man and shortly after his arrival here he became acquainted with young soldiers from Fort Niagara who were interested in studying the Bible with him and they formed a Bible Study group that was conducted in his home. They then held their study group in the old log cabin school house on the corner of what is now Main Street and Water Street It seems that Ashbel's sister Henrietta was a school teacher around that time also and she taught the students in their home. And then Ashbel's Bible Study classes evolved into little church services and more and more men and women attended them. And from those little church services evolved the Presbyterian Church as it still stands in Youngstown today. Ashbel Hinman left Youngstown before 1840 but not before the church had a real building to worship in. Cora said that the first minister who lived in the Presbyterian manse across the street from the church was by the name of Elliott. And Danny commented that we now have Elliott Street in Youngstown. And then they both realized that we have two streets named after the early church-Elliott Street and Church Street. Now I bet you didn't know that, did you? :-) vee from youngstown
Dear Pat, Wilson is a village in the Town of Wilson on the shores of Lake Ontario in Niagara Co. It's east of Town of Porter and west of Town of Newfane. It was named after Reuben Wilson Before Wilson became a town of its own in 1818, Reuben was elected as supervisor of the Town of Porter in 1815. In the book "Landmarks of Niagara County" edited by William Pool, 1897, it says that Reuben Wilson settled here in 1810 and that he (and others) "left the Canadian shore near Toronto in April, the two former [including Reuben] accompanied by their families, with household and farm utensils. They rowed around the head of Lake Ontario in open bateaux, camping on the shores at night, and in the early part of June, they arrived at the mouth of Twelve-mile Creek. A mile and a half east of there they landed, unloaded their effects, and by the aid of the boats turned bottom up and enclosed at the sides with bark, made a temporary abiding palce. They lived thus three months, during which time Wilson and [John] Eastman had each completed a substantial log house. The book goes on to record Reuben's reminiscenses which, if you're interested, I could transcribe and send to you. In addition it ways that Reuben Wilson was a native of Mass., migrated to Otsego Co., NY in 1805 and then went to Coburg, Canada in 1807. It goes on to tell further information about him. He had a son Luther. vee ----- Original Message ----- From: Pat Scott <pmscott@voyager.net> To: <NYNIAGAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 23, 2000 11:53 AM Subject: Michigan site > > Debbie, > Thanks for the site, Very interesting .
