Hello to all - I've been thinking. (watch out! <g>) A little bit back, I posted some thoughts about ways to contribute on a GenForum message board... and followed with a similar message on the "methods" newsgroup that then mirrored back to the methods rootsweb list. My intent was to brainstorm ways to "volunteer" / "contribute" - via transcribing or creating information (indexes and the like) - for online genealogical use - and "from a distance". Have received several replies - both public and private. Well.. what I had in mind was ways to contribute - for Niagara County, NY. So - "duh" - I remember it being asked here on this list - what each of would like to see at the county website. And again, "duh", if I'm thinking that I'd like to contribute to our mutual knowledge somehow of Niagara County - why in the blazes aren't I just writing a note to this list?!? (so here I am...) Here are some things I've thought of... would any of these be feasable or useful? Are there other local records that are more "needed"? What is easily done from California? And what "format" is best to submit information? Before getting ahead of myself... let me toss a couple of ideas out... and see what you all think... 1) I have a copy of volumes I and II of the Wilson Sketchbook published by the Wilson Historical Society - Niagara Co, NY. I could transcribe the gazillions of names in the index of each.. then if folks wanted them, they could order them locally. 2) I could create a database (searchable) - of full names (and select specific fields of information - like birth date, location - death date, location - cemetery name - plot number) - taken from commercial records at a local funeral home. Can't see that I could do actual cemetery stone transcriptions from a distance... but this type of index might work. I could get local paper files online from a funeral home or burial association. (providing "they" are willing!) 3) I have an interest in Wilson because of my own ancestors - so any local records I could transcribe or index would be a plus. I'm thinking about church records - esp any that aren't available on FHC microfilms. (and there "are" some not there!) Some other type of records kept in govt offices? Land? (we have Holland land records - but what of the names "later" as the property passed along?) Probate? (seems like probate is covered by access to sampubco.. although "dates" would be useful... now it is name and location, but not dates) 4) For published works - that include local biographies in the county - might I not again create an index? Hmm.. on idea one and now this one... if the published work already "has" an index... then I can't just "transcribe" it...if it is copywritten, right? But I "could" create one if a book doesn't have one? Is the Landmarks of Niagara County already indexed? It's out of print, but is it still under copyright? Seems like it would be a good candidate, since it's hard to get ahold of! Ok. Will stop the freeflowing brainstorming here. Did anything sound useful? Something I could do "on the side - in my own time - from a distance"?? I want to "start small"... and contribute.. taking baby steps... and see it happen... then take on another project... what do you all think? debbie CAhobbies@aol.com

The BURKE burials certainly show a CORNELL and McEVOY relationship and I recognized a COLLARD relationship to the CORNELL family. You have a cousin Tony COLLARD living here in Youngstown and he shared his family information for me. He descends from George and Bridget (KELLEY) COLLARD through their son Charles Eugene COLLARD, Sr. and Clara (CORNELL). I don't know if he knows who Clara's parents were. I have a theory of who Bridget (KELLEY) COLLARD's KELLEY family of Lewiston was but I don't have any hard evidence. Regarding the BURKE family, there's a biographical sketch of Michael BURKE, son of Thomas and Margaret (EAGAN) BURKE.in "Landmarks of Niagara Co., NY" by William Pool, 1897. I have a copy of the book. Regarding the PITZ family, I see the tie-in with your BURKE family in the biographical sketch of Philip P. PITZ (b 1863) in "Niagara Co., NY . . . " by Edward T. Williams, 1921. Philip was the proprietor of the Anglers Retreat Hotel in Lewiston. I have a copy of the book. David, let me know what days you'll be in Niagara Co. next week and hopefully we can get together on your families and share information. vee in Youngstown

Thank you, again. And, there is no embarrassment felt, what so ever. I have always been "guilty" of assumptions. I still think you are very wise and kind. Oh Dearest Pam! > P.S. An extra thank you. You are a very wise and kind man. You make > this list a comfortable place to visit. > Forgive me for giggling here and posting this to the list, but under the circumstances I guess it's time for me to really identify myself. This has happened to me before because of my unusual first name. You see, my full name is Vee Loraine Housman. When I was ten years old I was a girl and now that I'm about to reach the age of 69 in September, I guess you could say that I'm approaching the age of being a little old lady. My 30 years of service in the Navy was as a female enlisted woman --retired as Chief Petty Officer--and I have always been of the "female pursuasion." Married twice, divorced twice, no children or grandchildren. Pity. I think I would have been a cool Grandma. At least my grand-nieces and nephews consider me cool--even "phat," the label that my grand-niece Amanda recently declared that I deserve. Pam, I hope I haven't embarrassed you with the posting of this message to the list. What I REALLY read in your message were the words, "You are . . very wise and kind. . . . You make this list a comfortable place to visit." Trust me, that warmed my heart when it needed to be warmed the most right now. I just hope with further encouraging words such as yours, I'll be able to continue to post messages to the list that will be of some value and interest. The genealogy and history of this area is where my heart is. vee
Dear Bunch, I've already received several warm responses to my recent message about German Prisoners of War around here. But in every case, I had the feeling that the response wasn't directed to me ONLY--it was directed to the entire list. For those of you who said such nice words to me and added more words that would interest the entire list, how about a cut and paste of your message to me and post it to the list. at NYNIAGAR-L@rootsweb.com . I know that it took me awhile to figure out how I could respond to a message and post it to the entire list. What I finally figured out was to just to click on the "Reply to All" button. That way it will contribute to the ongoing great communication with each other that we've been having here most recently. We've become a very active and sharing group, you know. vee
Vee, what a wonderful story and memory! Thank you so much for all the stories and memories you share with all of us. My lines in Niagara County are very far back in time; around 1840. That is about the time my ancestor left his Northern roots, never to return. He moved to Louisiana where he died form the fever in 1858. Looking for parents and siblings of Amos R. Strong, b. 1818. He possibly had a brother named Alex, probably older. These two men both married in Chicot Co. Arkansas in the mid 1840's. Alex in 1843 and Amos in 1847. Take care and keep the memories flowing. Pam in Arkansas P.S. An extra thank you. You are a very wise and kind man. You make this list a comfortable place to visit. -- ----------------------------------------------------- Click here for Free Video!! http://www.gohip.com/freevideo/
