    1. Newfane
    2. I know live in Newfane, and my mother was raised here. I don't know muck right now, but Newfane was once called Charlotte. I don't know about a German population, but my gg-grandparents were from Germany. I hope to do a lot of research in the next couple of weeks. Maybe someone at Van Horn mansion could help with the history of the town. Catherine

    1. Town of Newfane's history
    2. Hi Evelyn, In response to: Does anyone know about the settling of Newfane, Niagara County, NY? My great grandparents, of German descent, settled there by 1859 as their first child was born there. Was there a significant German population in Newfane at this time? I wrote the town's historian and learned there is no published history, thus my question. Thanks much, Evelyn I have family who went to Newfane. They are enumerated in the 1840 Census and stayed in area. The town Historian may not be aware of the Publications of the Niagara County Historical Society. Pub. No.3 "THE HISTORY OF NEWFANE, N.Y." by Roy A. Newell 1950. It is out of print [naturally]. I am interested in this book, also. There were 13 Publications, and copies must be somewhere. They have approx. 50 pages each. I was fortunate enough to purchase "NIAGARA COUNTY and ITS TOWNS, by L. L. Pechuman; No. 13. Pub. by the Niagara Co. Historical society, Lockport, NY July, 1958. The only thing mentioned about "NEW FANE" [gives the boundries] Passed March 20, 1824; effective at once. The first town meeting was to be held at the house of James Van Horne. If the list is interested - I will list all of the titles. Hope this helps. Dolores Gunn from Niagara Falls, NY. Surnames - Lockport area: CHASE, MANDAVILLE, CUSHMAN, RANDALL, ALLEN, HUIE, BEECH, WHEELOCK, EDDY, BAILEY, MCMASTER, CRONCK, WILSON. P.S. To Vee - I appreciate your stories.

Bev, does your local FHC waive all rental fees for microfilms? At most FHCs, the policy is you may use anything already on the premises for free. If they have to order films from Salt Lake City, though, there's a small charge to cover the shipping. The church's own Web site says: "A staff member [at an FHC] can help you find family histories, biographies, genealogies, and other compilations in the catalog. Many of these materials are on microfilm and can be loaned to local Family History Centers for a small fee." (<http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,35-1-19-5,FF.html>) I just wanted to clarify for folks who haven't yet used these wonderful resources.... Ellen <niagara@unchi.org>

It is particularly helpful and available at quite a few genealogy libraries. There are Deed indexes at the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport but don't think available on Internet. They are divided into Grantor and Grantee indexes and go to very early 1800's. I can look up the 1840 census index next time I go to the genealogy library here in Chicago but it will be awhile as I am heading to vacation. All National Archive branches have the microfilms of all US censuses so there should be one within driving distance of you. Sharon Poole Sherrick --part1_f3.c5f391.269e1b97_boundary--

    3. Hi! I'm new to this list and have so far enjoyed reading the posts from NY. I'm in Mississauga, ONTARIO and decided to join this list as my great grandmother was born in Buffalo, NY. along with her 4 sisters. My gr grandmother's name was Sarah BOORE d/o Lewis and Eugenia (De St Claire) BOORE. Lewis BOORE was born in England, his wife, Eugenis De St Claire, France. I was wondering if anyone could find out for me through the Buffalo directories, for around the time period of 1870-1940's any of the Boore surnames and their occupations. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Linda, Mississauga, ON

    2. Re: Nancy's info on land records: If you want to view the films yourself, they can be ordered through your local LDS Family History Center at no charge. You will find it listed under: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I checked the FamilySearch website and the closest one to you is: Buffalo New York 1424 Maple Road Williamsville, Erie County, New York, United States Phone: (716) 688-2439 Hours: M 10am-5pm; T-Th 10am-9pm; Sat 10am-2pm. The staff is really helpful. You do not need to be a member of the church to use this facility. I am researching Gad Pierce and Robert Nichols of Lewiston. Since I live in Salt Lake City, I have access to THE Family History Library (the largest genealogical library in the world!) If you just can't wait for the film, I will be happy to do a lookup for you. Just check the Family History Library Catalog (www.familysearch.org,,,click on browse categories...then on libraries), send me the film nos. and details about your person and I'll check it out. Perhaps someday someone can do a lookup for me at the courthouse. Continued good luck! Bev originally from Cheektowaga

    2. Rene' Nilsson
    3. Hi, I recently received a copy of a family tree written in the early 1900's, from the Smithsonian. There are no sources, no dates, and there are inaccuracies just in what I have, so this isn't authoritative in any way, but there are a lot of names that I can try to track down. :) My ancestor is Alvis Hewitt, son of David B. Hewitt and probably Liza Johnson. The trees were written by his half-brother, John Napoleon Brinton Hewitt, b 1859 in Lewiston, son of Dr. David B. Hewitt and Harriet Brinton. Throughout the trees, the name Brinton appears also as Printon, Printup, and Printeux. David B Hewitt was born about 1815. He is listed as an "adopted white boy." Son of Brainard Hewitt, MD and Mary or Rebecca Alvis (not sure if this is the adopting family). Harriet Brinton is the daughter of Jonothan Printon, who was 1/4 Indian, and Eliza Mt Pleasant. Jonothan's parents were supposedly a "full-blood French officer and a half breed Mohawk Maiden". Eliza Mt Pleasant is the daughter of John Mt Pleasant Sr, and Sarah Jack. Eliza had many siblings. The children, in order listed, are: male, Eliza, William, John, male (died), Lucinda, Mary, female (died), Lucretia, Alexander, Clinton, and Sarah (Sally). Sarah Jack's parents were the daughter of Capt. Wm. Printup (son of Col Printeux, a French officer) and "Mr. Jack, warrior." Sarah had several siblings, including "Old Jack", "George Green's mother," "Lucy Isaac Smith's mother," and "Katie, William Chew's mother." John Mt Pleasant is the son of Capt Mt Pleasant, British officer, and a Mohawk maiden. There are also individuals listed just as 'Oneida chieftain' or 'Tuskarora chief', and a note of someone marrying a white captive who was adopted into the bear clan, which are interesting even if nothing more than a family legend. :) Yes, this is very rough, and I'm certainly not relying on any of this to be correct. :) But I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about these families? I thought there might be a chance at least for the Mt Pleasant family, as so many children are listed. Thanks for any help! Rene'

    3. In response to queries about land records in Niagara County. They have been microfilmed by the Mormon Church. You can research the availability of all microfilmed records for Niagara Co. by using the church's online Library Catalog at: http://familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp Land record research is a two-step process. First, you would look through microfilmed grantor (seller) & grantee (purchaser) deed indexes (by date & surname). Then, these index entries will direct you to the microfilmed deeds themselves. I've had great luck with these records -- land transfers were usually recorded, even when other records were not. I've even found family relationships in these records -- the sale of land by heirs of a deceased ancestor has given me names of the widow & all living children, as well as their spouses (thus giving me married names of daughters) -- they all had to sign! Good luck! 3. Dear Pam, et al, In my opinion it's very doubtful that the land records have even been transcribed as a whole. These records are in the county court house in Lockport and they're used heavily on a daily basis, especially by Title Search companies who have researchers in residence in the office--some complete with their own telephone lne. Now, whether the records have ever been microfilmed, is something that I just don't know.
