Sorry to have been unclear about that. The place I inquired was the Niagara Falls City Clerk's office, where I'm certain the particular records I was seeking are held. It's good of you to clarify the interesting (and surprising to out-of-staters) habit of New York towns, villages, and cities of keeping their own BDM records, when people from other states might be accustomed to looking for them at county courthouses. While this often presents problems in rural areas, I had a very positive experience recently when searching for a death "somewhere between Wilson and Olcott." Folks in the town and village of Wilson were most cooperative, and I finally record in Newfane. Elsa in Allegany County, Maryland (visiting Niagara Falls)

    3. Elsa, What courthouse were you visiting? In New York State, BMD records are not kept there but where the events occurred, with the exception of marriage. For example; I was born in Niagara Falls, NY - my birth certificate is at the City Clerk's Office in Niagara Falls. My husband and I applied for our marriage license at Lockport, NY - our marriage certificate is at the City Clerk's Office in Lockport. My dad died at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY - his death certificate is at the Town Clerk's Office in the Town of Lewiston, NY. If he had died at the Village of Lewiston, the certificate might be at the Village Clerk's Office or the Town Clerk's Office. More often than not, the records are kept at the town rather than the village; but not always. I hope this helps. Ellen Colangelo

    3. Visiting Niagara Falls again to do more family history research, today went to the courthouse to apply for some BMD records, and the person who appeared to be in charge told me that (1) I could only apply for records in my direct blood line, specifically that I could not apply for my father's sister's birth certificate (1898) at all, and (2) the forms she gave me were for making application to Albany. She said that she would not take any requests for records, that they were too busy and too under-staffed to do this "secondary" work. When I told her that it was my understanding that Albany had discontinued all but in-person application for records last August, she told me that she had never heard such a thing. I've tried to "study up" on New York State vital record procurement prior to my trip, and am now totally confused. Going to Lockport tomorrow to do some other research and will see if I can get any further information at the county level, but as I understand it, all vital records are held at the local level. Any advice or suggestions will be gratefully received, and anyone planning a long-distance trip to Niagara Falls in search of vital records, please be warned that you can't count on finding them at the city courthouse. 3. Dear dear friends, I owe a debt of gratitude to Ellen Colangelo was such a sweetheart to keep you up to date on my progress. I finally was released from the hospital this afternoon and arrived home around 4:30. I'm pretty well exhausted. The surgery went well--once it was finally done--very little pain since then but then they kept me pretty much doped up. I slept most of the time since then. But the past couple of days I've been able to get around by way of hanging onto the handles of a wheel chair and pushing it around--I called it my shopping cart! My legs are still a bit wobbly but I'm getting stronger each day. A public health nurse will be visitng me on a daily basis to help change my dressing and othe things of that nature so I'll be in good hands. I can't thank you all enough for all of your prayers and good wishes. I've received nearly 200 of them. Not only did all of your prayers help me, they also spilled over to the family of a patient across the hall from me.who was in dire need of them, also. A number of you mentioned that you would like to send a card to me and I don't mind posting my personal address to the list. After all, I'm listed in the phone book and as far as I know, I'm the only Vee Housman listed anywhere. Vee Housman 3642 Creek Rd. Youngstown, NY 14174 It's is people like you who have been my greatest overall support in this very long three months of agonizing anxiety. I still don't know what's ahead of me but I do know this, with support of the likes of you, I can get through anything. Given a bit more recuperation time, I hope to be back to my old self, telling stories, answering queries and all of that good stuff. luvya all so very much, vee

    3. Hi! I just came on line and found a message from Vee's Debbie from last night. She says that Vee is coming home today, that someone else is picking her up, and doesn't know what time. The letter states that Debbie's grandmother died yesterday. My guess is that is why Debbie cannot be with Vee. My downstairs and upstairs hall were being painted yesterday; and through the mess, I tried to call Vee, at the hospital. There was no answer and I didn't get another chance to try. If the painters don't show up before 8 AM, I'll try again this morning and let you know. Now, I have to ask you to pray hugs around Debbie. Many Many Thanks...Ellen Colangelo

    3. This AM, I spoke with the Niagara County Historian, located at Niagara & Hawley, Lockport, NY 14094, regarding the whereabouts of wills. He told me they would be at the Niagara County Surrogate Court, located at 175 Hawley St., Lockport, NY 14094. I just got off the phone with Judy at the Surrogate's office. She told me that they do NOT do the researching; but do charge $1.00/per copy page. In other words, the researcher does his/her own work; and the office does the copying. She said that she knows of cases where it has cost a person $70.00 to have the search done. Apparently, it depends on what type of records one wants as to whether the "clerk" does the work or not. Since I live in Niagara County but do not have any deep roots here, I did not know this. I should have asked if there is a time in years limit. Oh, well, maybe tomorrow. Keep digging! Ellen Colangelo (I include my last name because there seem to a couple of us whose mothers knew "we were lights in the darkness". That's what our name means.) :)

    3. Good Evening! Vee called me, this morning, while my husband and I were walked by our miniature poodle. Upon returning her call, I found out that she was going home. About 45 mins. later, she called...not happy. The dr. decided that she would not be released for, at least, another day. Our Vee was frustrated and a wee bit angry. Frankly, I thought she sounded very tired. When I made the mistake of suggesting that perhaps it would be better for her to stay a little longer, I thought she was going to hang-up on me. After a while she decided to go back to bed and take a nap. Keep those prayers going up, Vee wants to GO HOME Ellen Colangelo

Often what one gets depends on the clerk. When I went to the Town of Lewiston for my parents marriage certificate (Dad is gone but Mom is still here), I mentioned that Dad had died in 1971 at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital (in the Town of Lewiston). The clerk gave me a copy of both the marriage cert. and Dad's long death cert. A couple of years ago, I stopped at Alexandria Bay seeking the death cert of my grandfather, who died in 1964. No way. I MUST prove my descendancy. When I tried to explain that I needed the cert to do that. She laughed at me. One more thing, I suggest that if you send a fee, use a US PO money order. Many of the clerk offices will not accept personal checks. Besides, then you have the PO working for you, too. Be pleasant, mention that you are working on your family history (many clerks have had BAD experiences with genealogists and do not like them), and itemize your subject, ie; Name DOB POB Paragraphs make extracting the information difficult. These people are doing us a favor by taking time from their work that the taxpayers expect from them. Digging Up Roots! Ellen Colangelo
