Has anyone heard about this website: http://www.FamilyDiscovery.com/family I got a letter from them today, but am reluctant to give them 50 bucks without even a free look around or something. The 20 dollar 3-month deal might be worth it. It really does sound like all the others, and it sounds as if they have just linked the others up to make it easier to navigate. There are SO many sites out there that I can't believe they have gathered up ALL of them into one place. I keep finding new ones. In case you didn't hear from them, here is what I got: ______________________________________________________________________________ From: Family Discovery <email@familydiscovery.com> To: <jfhaynes@lookingglass.net> Subject: Fellow Genealogist You're Invited... 3. I've been on this list since last Nov. 17, but don't recall anyone mentioning this wonderful Website: http://olivercowdery.com/census/BurntCen.htm Yes, some nameless angel has posted the index for three censuses (1810-30) for 13 counties. And this particular page gives us a clear, graphic picture of the evolution of the counties of the "Burned-Over District" (i.e., everything west of Seneca Lake): http://olivercowdery.com/census/BurnEvlv.htm Cheers, Ron Kyser

    2. Vee L. Housman
    3. Dear Group, I know that this message is totally inappropriate and selfish on my my part, but if any of you would care to respond to it with a Happy Birthday message to me, I know that it will brighten up my day tomorrow, September 12. Birthdays are so special to everyone and even though I've already received a birthday card from my sister Norma and my Aunt Edna (90 years old) in the mail, I guess I still need some warm hugs. You people mean a lot to me, I want to contribute so much more to our list--and I CAN--but right now all that I know is that tomorrow is my birthday and it won't be an easier day than today was for me (TRUST ME and don't ask me why! :-)) But I have an idea that I'll get through tomorrow much better than I did today if a few of you would just wish me a Happy Birthday tomorrow. A little 68-year-old girl going on 69, vee

    2. D. Sue Kissel
    3. Hi, I just returned from a week in Salt Lake where I attended the FGS/UGA conference. One of the classes I attended was on NY research taught by Gordon L. Remington. He mentioned a set of records that I was not aware of and thought I would pass the information along to the group. Town clerks had registers of men who served in the Civil War. These records include such information as individuals, full name, residence, date and place of birth and parents names. Since Lockport is not on the film I did not find the information I was looking for, however it does give info on the towns of Somerset, Hartland, Pendleton and Newfane. 1. PS to Ellen and Group
    2. Vee L. Housman
    3. Dear Group, Ellen, sorry to hear you're still in pain. With me, well I guess we're in the same boat on that subject. But I've had a bit of a setback lately (today) and it looks like it will be pretty much of a long term process for my incision to heal properly. And in the meantime, I'm not dealing very well with it all mentally. I know that the worst of it is over, but with my having to rely on others to do even simple things for me that recently I was quite capable of doing for myself, it has taken a toll on even my ability to respond decently to emails that I receive or to keep promises that I have made regarding lookups or such. My Inbox is overloaded with unanswered messages and the reason I'm posting this to the list is to let you know that if you have asked me a family research or history question or even just a nice message that I would like to reply to, the reason why you haven't received a response from me is that for most of the day I'm pretty much a mental cripple. It's only on rare moments such as this one that I can focus on what means the most to me--local families and local history. The rest of each day is spent trying to cope with getting throught it all--one moment and one day at a time. vee

    3. Dear Ellen, et al, Wow, you sure know how to write an informative message to the list! :-) I couldn't have dug up that sort of information (re the Schoelkopf Plant) unless someone had written a Master's thesis on the subject at Niagara University or some such. Darn, and just when I thought I either knew it all or had the information at hand in old history books! Don't you just hate it when something like that happens to you?? :-) Re your suggestions as to the places to go for research in this area, I agree with you 100%. I just might add that anyone visiting the Niagara County Historical Society will find themselves in the same building as the Niagara Co. Genealogical Society. One word of caution. Call ahead to check what days/hours they're open. from vee, who's barely hanging in here! :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: A. Robert & Ellen E. They have listed the surname of Kinyon buried in the cemetery? Any help finding out what Kinyon is buried there would be appreciated! Sandra

    3. HI, group, I've been off for a while because I was writing a book for the JOHNSON line of my family. We had a reunion on the 2nd. (Unless you come from Central New York, I can guarantee you that we are not related. In the 1850's, the name was JOHANSEN. When Hans came to this country, he americanized it. He and Lene had 2 chldren; one died and the other was my g-grandfather.) And, I've had a minor but painful health problem. So as you can see by my "subject", I've a few things to add. 1. The Simond Saw Co. was just taken over by the Corps of Engineers, in order to "study" any contamination. 2. The Schoelkopf Power Station collapsed because of the greed and ignorance of man. When one sees some of the very old pictures of that particular side of the City of Niagara Falls, one cannot help but notice the several factories (for want of a better description) at the top of the gorge. Beside each of these buildings are raceways of water. There were many channels dug to connect what is called the upper river with the lower river; and to give power for the industry. (This just means one side of town with the other. The City of Niagara Falls is shaped somewhat like a triangle with each leg along the river.) As the factories went out of business some of the channels were filled as best and cheaply possible. There are still buried channels that are frequently found when the untilities are digging. Anyway, as we all know from physics class :), water will seek the path of least resistance. Sometimes this takes decades. The Schoelkopf was built at the base of the gorge. An elevator shaft was dug down to the plant for accessability. My dad was a mechanic for Otis Elevator Co. and my grandfather was the District Representative for Otis. Unless he was on a call, Dad always was home by 5 for dinner at 5:15 PM. The afternoon of the collapse, Dad came in, said he had to leave right a way, that he heard on the radio there had been an accident at the Schoelkopf. (This scared Mom, my brother and me because 2 years before he, Gramps, and the man referred to as their "Helper" [in the elevator business a Helper was the same as an apprentice] had missed being killed by about 10 mins. when the Prospect Point fell at the Falls. This is another story.) He told us later that he had to park on the shoulder of the road, and jumped the fence to get to the entrance. The elevator worked and most of the men were accounted for but until they took a count they wouldn't know for sure, was what he said. Later, it was reported that one man died. The water seeped down through the rock and shale until it found its path of least resistance. When it gushed out, circuits were blown and the plant basically blew up. The remains can be seen from a viewing point above. 3. 1. Re: Where is Niagara County in 1790 census?
    2. R. Kyser
    3. It's not cheap-- though probably no costlier than the printed atlas-- but the AniMap County Boundary Historical Atlas on CD also traces the outline of every county in the U.S. from the year it was erected. It starts with the original colonial or territorial settlement, too. It's often offered on Ancestry.com. According to this, Niagara (and most of the other counties west of modern-day Syracuse) were Six Nation Indian land until 1782 when it was added to Tryon County, which stretched from the Susquehanna to the St. Lawrence and Lake Erie and was renamed Montgomery in 1784. Massachussets claimed the land until 1786 as well. Ontario County was erected in 1789, from which Genesee was carved in 1802 and in turn Niagara in 1808. Niagara included what's now Erie County until 1821, and ceded some land to Erie in 1824. Cheers, Ron Kyser -----Original Message----- From: Chris Leonard Date: Saturday, September 09, 2000 11:26 PM Subject: Re: Where is Niagara County in 1790 census? If you don't know what land was part of what county and town when, you can spend a lot of time looking in the wrong place. There is an excellent atlas the name of which escapes my menopausal brain at the moment...they have it in all genealogical and most public libraries. It shows the counties of every state for every census. I photocopied all the maps for each state I was going to be doing research in for each census year. The web is fine but there are times you can't get to it or have trouble downloading something (it took me EIGHT tries to get onto the web tonight, i kept getting bumped!) >
