2. Bob Weston
3. Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/NiagaraObits/26 Surname: Weston, Clemisher, Marks, Marx ------------------------- The following two obituaries for Margaret (Clemisher/Marks) Weston were published in the Thursday, April 12, 1883 issue of the Wyoming (Illinois) Post and the April 11, 1883 edition of the Niagara Falls Gazette. From the Wyoming Post: DIED The funeral services of Mrs. Margaret Weston, wife of Mr. Charles Weston Sr., took place at the residence, near the Valley M.P. church on Friday, April 6, 1883, and were conducted by the Rev. W. H. Jordan, by the special request of the lady deceased, and also of the family. Although the morning was wet and stormy, a large number of neighbors and friends were present to show their respect for the dead and their sympathy for the bereaved family. The services were very solemn and impressive: the text, John 14:2 having been selected because of the comfort it afforded Mrs. Weston while living and suffering. Deceased was 66 years old and died from the effects of cancer in her face. She was a patient sufferer through all the weary months that slowly but surely matured the work of death. Mrs. Weston was the mother of Mrs. C.C. Collier of Wyoming. She was happy in Jesus and gave full evidence of her acceptance with God. The remains were taken East for burial. J. From the Niagara Falls Gazette: The body of Mrs. Chas. Weston, late of Wyoming, Ill., was brought here on Sunday morning on the 10:50 train for interment. The body was deposited in E.M. Clark's Morgue and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery on Monday, at two O'clock p.m. She was for many years a resident of this village, moving away about seventeen years ago with her husband, who has had charge of the bridge building on the Western division of the C.R.R. Many remember her as being a pleasant, kind lady.

3. Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/NiagaraObits/25 Surname: Weston ------------------------- The following two newspaper stories detail the accident and death of Charles Weston, who lived in Suspension Bridge (Niagara Falls) in the 1850s and 1860s. He helped build the first permanent bridge over the Niagara River. From the Wyoming (Illinois) Post Herald, July 1891: Just about sundown Monday evening last, Charles Weston, an old and well-known citizen of Penn township, was the victim of an accident from which his death has been hourly expected. He was returning home from Wyoming in a cart to which he was driving a young mare. Bushrod Tapp's boys saw that Mr. Weston was not in the seat while passing their place, and a closer examination revealed the fact that the unfortunate man had fallen backward and was hanging with his head downward. The animal was trotting along toward the home which is about three and a half miles northeast of Wyoming, and fearing they might frighten the animal and make her run, they ran along the inside of the pasture fence, climbed into the road ahead and stopped her. It was found that Mr. Weston had fallen in such a manner that his feet caught in a rope used for tying a basket to the vehicle. His legs were bent across the axle so that the back of his head rested on the hard road. The track in the dust indicated that in this perilous position he was dragged nearly three fourths of a mile. It was evident he was rendered insensible when his head first struck the hard ground, and was therefore unable to regain a sitting posture. Dr. Morse was immediately called, and an examination showed a portion of the scalp larger than a silver dollar to be entirely torn away and the skull was worn almost through. He was taken to the home, half a mile east from where he was picked up. The farm is occupied by his son John Weston, with whom he has made his home since the demise of his wife some years ago. The wound was dressed, but restoratives failed to bring him back to consciousness. His sons William and George of Peoria and Charles who lives in the West, were summoned by telegraph. At the time of going to press we learn that Mr. Weston has not yet regained consciousness, that he is gradually growing weaker, and that all hopes of his recovery have been abandoned. The following obituary was published in the Thursday, July 23, 1891 issue of the Wyoming Post Herald: "DIED CHARLES WESTON, aged 74 years, 7 months and 10 days at his home in Penn Township, Stark County, Illinois. Friday afternoon, July 17, 1891. Charles Weston was born in England. He came to America when 16 years of age. Being a bridge builder and carpenter, he worked several years for the New York Central railway company, residing at Niagara Falls. In 1864 he came to Illinois and with his family located on the farm in Penn township, which has ever since been the homestead. His death is the result of an accident which befel him on Monday evening, the 13th inst., the particulars of which have been given in the previous issue of this paper. Mr Weston, although an active man for one of his age, was becoming infirm, and it is the opinion of his family that he must have suffered a paralytic stroke when he fell backward from his vehicle and received his death injury. He never recovered consciousness after the shock, quietly passing away. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. M. De L. Bowen, were held at the home on Sunday afternoon. A large number of neighbors of the vicinity, including a number from Wyoming and Castleton, attested their esteem and sympathy by their attendance. There were many floral tributes. On Monday the remains were taken to the former home at Niagara, for interment beside the wife, who died of cancer about eight years ago. Four sons and two step daughters survive the parents, William H., who is a locomotive engineer for the C.R.I. & P., lives at Peoria. John lives on the homestead. Charles is a farmer in Phillips County, Kansas, and George is a resident of St. Louis. The sons were present before the death and at the funeral. George accompanied the remains to the last resting place."

1. Jane, the Aide
2. Vee L. Housman
3. Dear Group, As most of you know I'm trying my best to recover from my recent radical mastectomy surgery. It hasn't been easy by no means, but I wanted to say something about Jane, the Aide who shows up promptly at 10:30 in the morning three times a week. Now in the first place, I'm not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination and Jane is lucky if I'm even out of bed at that early hour. But we now have an arrangement where she calls me on the phone to wake me up prior to her arrival. And it seems to be working. By the time she arrives I'm at least out of bed and downstairs and I have presence of mind to unlock the kitchen door so that I won't have to do that when she arrives. She's a very chirpy person and, of course, at that early hour, it's all that I can do to give her any sort of civil response. Generally, I just grunt an acknowledgement of her arrival. But she understands. That's the way I am. She's very patient with me as I stumble around with my cup of morning tea and she just waits for me to let her know what I need her to do for me during the time she's there. But at that early hour, I hardly have a clue. But in the meantime, Jane just looks around and goes right ahead to dust or scrub or clean whatever she feels needs to be done. She continues to surprise me. But here's the thing of it. Aide Jane isn't just an ordinary "cleaning woman." She's actually an LPN and when I need assistance taking a bath. she knows just what to do. Lordy, even if I were totally helpless, she would be able to scrub me from head to toe, dry me off tenderly and get me back on my feet in the most caring manner. As a result of Jane's visits over these past few weeks, my house has begun to sparkle more than I would care to admit to over the years due to my own neglect,. Yes, I admit that her "chirpyness" is driving me up the wall so early in the morning, but the bottom line is that in my "senior years," I have someone like Jane to take care of a whole bunch of "stuff" that right now I'm not capable of doing for myself. Now who is taking care of the bill for her services? Well, in my confused mind right now, I can only assume that the Veteran's Administration (US goverment) is paying for it--I'm a veteran, you know.. However, I feel that Medicare or Medicaid (I'm in NY, you know) are also footing the bill. And juss in case you wonder where some of your tax dollars are going to, well, maybe I just told you. Still hanging in here, vee

2. Daniel B. Cooley
3. Dear List Members I'll repeat my request (Thank you, Vee, for looking up one cemetery for me). I should say that I am not asking anybody to look anything up for me. I just want to know if there is, say, a list of cemetery listings for Wilson, Newfane, Cambria and Lockport. Is there a way online that I could find a library listing of cemetery lists for these towns. I want to prepare for an eventual trip to Niagara County. My earlier request - My g3-grandfather, Noah Cooley, settled in Niagara County upon Holland Land Purchase land. I have no further information about him after that but I have assumed he did NOT leave, i.e. Niagara County was his "final resting place". With that in mind, are there published cemetery lists especially for Wilson, Newfane, Cambria and Lockport? -- Dan Cooley San Mateo, California

3. I'm sorry; but I don't remember who requested info on hazardous sites in WNY so I'm sending this to the List. Today's Lockport Union Sun & Journal (Wednesday, September 13, 2000) states, "Study calls Simonds radiation negligible". It goes on to say that Timothy J. Viktus, Project Manager for the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in Oak Ridge, Tenn. said that his company studied the site in December 1999 and found that radiation levels are about the same as background or natural radiation. It goes on. If whoever you are would like a copy of the article, contact me on my e-mail with your snail mail address and I'll send it to you. Ellen Colangelo

2. R/S Arnold
3. List: I read some mention of this site on NYNiagara. I then opened my next email from another list and found this nicely detailed response, explains it very well. I copied & pasted it below: ---------------------------------------------- From: Mdmgen@aol.com Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 00:11:48 EDT To: ARNOLD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ARNOLD] Familydiscovery Scam To all Subscribers: There has been a lot of postings about the site: www.familydiscovery.com on many of the lists. I feel that I should make you all aware that this site is a subscription site that is charging for access to free sites. As far as anyone can tell this site has no original information of any kind. It uses a process called "shrink wrapping" that causes any page displayed to look as if it is their site. You can see an example of shrink wrapping by visiting http://www.askjeeves.com. No matter what link you choose the askjeeves information is displayed on your screen. The same is true of the familydiscovery site. What this site is doing is not illegal, but in my opinion, it is certainly unethical. Here is the latest word from our TNGenWeb list regarding FamilyDiscovery.com: FamilyDiscovery.Com (http://www.familydiscovery.com) is a commercial genealogical venture which *charges* subscribers to view *free* genealogical and historical data. The data is *not* FamilyDiscovery.Com's, but "ours" (we Internet researchers whose transcriptions have been uploaded to the Internet). FamilyDiscovery.Com has done this by use of "frames." You pay to access their site where you will find links to various databases (births, marriages, deaths, wills, deeds, census, tax lists, obituaries, etc.). When you click the links, you are taken to HTML pages *off* FamilyDiscovery.Com's site, including USGenWeb Project county and state pages and government pages (A couple of days ago, their "What's New" page listed only TSLA sites). The catch is that FamilyDiscovery.Com does not tell you that you are being taken "off-site" to free areas of the Internet, but instead uses "frames" to keep you trapped in what "looks like" their site. Both RootsWeb.Com and USGenNet's SysAdmins are aware of the situation, and the initial *unofficial* response has been that there is little that can be done at *server level* that won't possibly also result in other problems, including busting our own frames (if any) or locking out "legitimate" visitors to our site, and that it would be easy enough for FamilyDiscovery.com's folks to just keep changing IP's, etc. (always a step ahead of us). Various government agencies (right down to local police departments) have been contacted, but in the meantime, we can't even know if our own sites are being hit unless we pay to look at their sites.... Personally, I think that the deception is the worse part of the whole thing. The idea of supplying someone else's work in such a way as to make it appear as your own is false representation. That is my opinion. Just remember, you can get the same and a lot more from Cyndy's List - and she never charges anything for the same thing. http://www.cyndislist.com/ Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet Maryann Dixon Moseby Listkeeper ------------------------------------end of pasted response-----------------

1. Youse guys are great!!!
2. Vee L. Housman
3. Dear Group, Today I realized the magnitude of how wonderful a bunch of people we have here on our list. Last night I turned to the list in dire hopes of receiving at least a couple of Happy Birthday messages today, my very own birthday. I really needed to reach out and hope that someone would brighten up my day today. I knew that what with my mental and physical struggle to recuperate from surgery and knowing that I was faced with an especially unpleasant physical day ahead of me, I really needed a few smiley faces sent my way on my birthday. But WOW, youse guys outdid yourselves! And I'm still overwhelmed by your many, many birthday greetings and by the warm words you included. The greetings continued to flood in during the entire day, they made me feel great, they made me smile and I got through the especially unpleasant physical aspect of the day MUCH better than I could have without such an outpouring. This evening my niece Deb took me out for a birthday dinner, it perked up my lagging appetite and our conversation stimulated my sagging mind. Her kids insisted I return to Deb's house for cake and ice cream afterwards and the cake was decorated with "Happy Birthday, Phat Auntie Vee"! (Note: my again sagging mind has forgotten whether I let you other oldsters in on the meaning of "phat" as used by the kids. It means a sort of "waaayyyy cooler than just cool!" Yeh, ME! Can you believe that? :-)). And of course my grandniece Amanda had to tell me more than I what I really wanted to know about what goes on in high school nowadays (she does that, you know, just to get a rise out of me--and I didn't disappoint her when I gave her disapproving responses. Lands-a-Goshen, what goes on nowadays.with these children! Why, in my day . . . . . !:-)) What has also given me a warm feeling is how our list has become so friendly with each other and so willing to share with each other. Whether it be genealogy, history, memories or just a few giggles. I've been a member of the list for several years and let me tell you, back in the early years I was reminded only on rare occasions that I had even subscribed to it when someone actually posted a message or query to it. See? We've come a long way! But getting back to the giggles that I received today, Sandra Northrup, although you're not a very good singer, I really laughed over your actually "singing" Happy Birthday to me by way of an email message. Thanks so much! But I've gotta tell you all, that Jamie Hunter outdid Sandra. This is the greeting she sent me: hum hum hum hum hum huuuuummmmm hum hum hum hum hum huuuuuummmmmm hum hum huuuumm huuuumm hum VEEEEEEE hum hum hum hum hum huuuuummmmmmm! I don't sing very well at all so I had to hum! jamie - a Tonawanda transplant in California I'm still giggling over all of the above and I'm still overwhelmed how much better all of you have made me feel today, my very own birthday, with all of your wonderful cards and warm words. Gee, I can't remember even as a little kid receiving so many wonderful gifts from so many people. It's been a most memorable happy birthday due to all of you. And in case I didn't mention it before, youse guys are the GREATEST! And for those of you have just recently subscribed to our list, just sit back, relax, send us your queries, your questions about the history of Niagara County, your memories of when you or your parents used to live here and just know that the rest of us will respond with whatever each of has that will help you in your family research and knowledge of our history here. We've become quite a close family here, you know, but we're always looking forward to adding more family members to it. Isn't that what genealogy is all about in the first place? luvya, vee
