What a nice surprise to see the LeVan name picked up on the Niagara County boards. My family is descended from Daniel LeVan of PA, Thomas LeVan (my great-gr-gr-gr-grandfather) moved to Niagara County in the 1820's or early 30's. Always looking to trade info with my "cousins" from any branch of the family tree!

We have an extensive history of the LeVan family through a book dedicated to it published around the turn of the century. It traces some parts back to the middle ages. It includes my great-grandmother. Quite a book.

Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Niagara/377 Surname: GREEN, BATES ------------------------- Luther K. GREEN and his family left Niagra County, New York around 1850-55. He settled in Peoria County Illinois and began to farm here. He is listed in the Illinois census of 1855. His father-in-law, Obadiah BATES came with him. My gggrandfather, son of Luther K. Green, George Green was born in Niagra County. Any help on these two families would be greatly appreciated. Luther K. GREEN died in 1865 and his family continued to live here. I have been able to locate much of the GREEN family in Illinois but have lost Obadiah BATES after 1865 or so. Just wanted to let all of you know that I received the birth, death, and marriage records I had sent for. It only took about three weeks, which surprised me. Beth Ingham at the Somerset Town Clerk's Office did a great job. There was only one surprise. I didn't know the records would be brand new ones, and not copies of the originals. A bit disappointed only because I like to see that old handwriting, but thankful to have what I have. Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Niagara/373 Surname: STODDARD, TWITHEL ------------------------- Susan, Happy to get your response. Perhaps we should switch this conversation from Niagara Co. to Erie Co. I'll copy this and enter it as a query on that siteas well. I think there is a possibility that we do have ancestors in common. I was in Erie Co. for a short while in October and was able to take a look at an extract from the 1855 NY state census. I found my g-grandfather, Ivory Stoddard, in both and I noticed that a Shepard Stoddard was also there in the same town (Newstead). That caught my attention because my grandfather's name is Earl Shepard Stoddard, and I wondered if he had been named for an uncle. Ivory and Shepard are within seven years of each other and are the only ones of the Erie Co. Stoddards to be living in Newstead. I recently replied to a post on the Erie Co. site from a woman who is listing Ivory, one of his sons, and his mother. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Erie/1671 If she is correct, then Ivory's mother's name was Lydia, and he Shepard were probably brothers. According to the 1855 census, Shepard was born in Orleans Co. Byron is actually in Genesee Co. but close to the Orleans/Genesee line. If you don't have this 1855 census, let me know and I'll scan it and e-mail it to you. I don't think I know any of your people (Shepard's) descendants. My grandfather was part of Ivory's second family in Michigan. I'm just recently beginning to find out about his first family in NY. I live in Iowa City, IA, so I don't often have a chance to do research in Erie Co. Do you live in that area? Hope to hear from you. Richard

Dear Group, This afternoon I mailed off a copy of the book I had written based on Town of Porter history and I emailed the girl in Michigan to let her know that it's on the way. Included in my message to her was a bit of an inside story about how I had eventually identified my ficitious little heroine, Virginia, as me, myself. And that continues to surprise me. I didn't have a clue at the time! I hope you can just appreciate what I was inspired to write about the subject matter this evening. vee Exactly seven years ago today, I drove into Niagara Falls to hand over my finished manuscript to my "publisher," In-and-Out Printing on Main Street. In other words, I had just finished writing a book based on the history of the Town of Porter, had printed each page off on my printer and I was taking it into the Falls to have 100 copies of it run off. After that was accomplished, all that I had to do was to spiral bind each book myself and it would be published for all the world to read! It had taken me three years-off and on-to write the book and I had gotten to know my fictitious little heroine Virginia very well during that time. The two of us had spent many hours together agonizing over just how she would have responded to a particular incident or just how Grandpa McCollum would have reacted under similar circumstances. This evening I dug up the journal I had kept at the time and this is what I had written down about my feelings as I was driving home after dropping off the finished manuscript on November 24, 1993. "When I drove home, it slowly dawned on me what I had just done. I had ultimately checked over, edited, looked over, re-read my book AND had come to the conclusion that it was actually adequate enough to hand over to the printer which would result in the eventual book being published with no further changes or improvements on my part. I wonder if my feelings about my book are similar to a parent's feelings about "handing over" a child at its wedding or "letting" it go out into the world on its own. I know the book has its flaws, but I also know its value. It can stand on its own and I'll defend it to anyone! [In other words], I had made the decision that the writing of it was complete and that once handed over to the printer, there was no turning back. It was FINISHED. "Virginia and I have become very close over the past three years (as well as Madison [McCollum], Melville [McCollum] and the rest of the McCollum family). I hate to give them up-Virginia in particular. "Virginia, keep in touch and let me know how you're doing. There is no doubt that I will be surprised at how you manage to live your own life in spite of the role I had originally cast for you. During the writing of the book you continued to surprise me by your comments and your reactions to the story. Virginia, if you have anything you want me to write about, let me know. "There is one thing that I know, and that is that you have SPUNK. Tell me your story and help me to write it. Let's start another exciting adventure again! "Virginia, I miss you. Please keep in touch with me."
What?? No football during thanksgiving dinner... why that's un-American! Johnny Farmers Branch, Tx Alternate E-mail: searchangel@ureach.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vee L. Housman" <housman@adelphia.net> To: <NYNIAGAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 23, 2000 9:00 PM Subject: YIPPEE! I Didn't Get Stuck With the Turkey Carcass!! Dear Niagara Group, ......place to sit even if meant having to squeeze between two others. By the way, when we sat down at the table the TV football game was turned OFF!
Dear Niagara Group, I just posted the following to the PADUTCH-LIFE list because we have been having an ongoing annual discussion of coping with the leftover turkey carcass. I'm sending it to all of you for what it's worth. If nothing else, it pretty much describes a family Thanksgiving dinner on Lutts Road in Town of Porter this evening. I wish you could have been there with us. vee Dear Group, For the past three years I have posted a message to the group about how I always get stuck with the turkey carcass from Thanksgiving dinner but this year is different! :-) For those of you who would like to read about my earlier encounters with the turkey carcass, the messages can be found in the archives. Go to the interactive search of Rootsweb mailing lists at http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and type in the name of the list PADUTCH-LIFE. From there search/query the word "carcass." for all three years (1998, 1999, 2000). All of my messages were written in the tone of an "old maid aunt" who always grumbles about wasting food, but they were also written by an aunt who was/is well aware how much her family loves her. I hope your Thanksgiving Day was just as special to you. vee YIPPEE! I Didn't Get Stuck With the Turkey Carcass!! This MUST be the millennium! This is the first year in many years that I didn't have to cart home the leftover turkey carcass after my niece Deb's Thanksgiving dinner. But this year I guess dinner at her house was also a bit different. On a sad note Deb's Grandma was no longer with us. But on a bright note, Deb's new granddaughter Madeline was there. And this year more people were invited. They are the future in-laws of Deb's daughter Dawn (my grand-niece). Along with her fiancée Ron, was his mother, his sister with her husband and son, and Ron's brother. At last count, there were 13 of us at a good old sit-down family Thanksgiving dinner. In other words, it was the first time that the two families had gotten together. But let me tell you, it was as if we had been family for a long time. Everyone made themselves at home, Ron's sister Sue helped Deb and Dawn with setting up the two long tables, everyone did what they could to help and when they couldn't help, they kept out of the way. And when it came to sitting down at the groaning table(s), everyone managed to find a place to sit even if meant having to squeeze between two others. By the way, when we sat down at the table the TV football game was turned OFF! After Dawn said a lovely Grace, the serving dishes of food were passed any old which-way-up,down or across the table-and the conversation was lighthearted and lively. As the dinner wound down and everyone was pretty much stuffed, the subject of leftovers for Auntie Vee came up. Well, of course, so was the subject of the turkey carcass. Deb and Dawn told Sue and Sue, Sr. (Ron's mom) about past dinners when they had loaded me down with the carcass. I told Sue, Sr., how I make a scrumptious turkey stock out of the carcass and she said that she makes it the same way-simmer on low for 12 to 24 hours. So (tee hee) guess who got stuck with the turkey carcass this year? Sue, Sr.!! She didn't mind at all and if I play my cards right, I'll make certain that Sue, Sr. is invited to all future Thanksgiving dinners! But Auntie Vee still came home with plastic cartons of lotsa good stuff! As usual, Deb had made one of her famous table centerpieces of raw vegetables arranged in a flower bouquet effect. This year the flowers were anchored into a base of a half of overturned cantaloupe. Last year I think it was a large potato and the year before it was a rutabaga. In addition was her now famous "flying duck" arrangement made out of a yellow summer squash with a carved carrot beak and clove eyes. Well, as usual, Auntie Vee was invited to disassemble the centerpiece and tuck the vegetables into Zip-Lock bags to take home with her. The "dead duck" will give me two servings of summer squash for dinner, I'm gonna splurge and sauté up the (expensive) sweet red and orange peppers for another vegetable serving, the carrots will make another serving, the green onions will end up in a salad and the cantaloupe will be a special treat. So as Thanksgiving Day winds down for me, I can look back over the day and be thankful for the most important blessing in my life-my family. We've always been a unique collection of family members and it looks like we're going to add a few more unique members to it next year at the wedding. Of course, the food was plentiful and we all thanked the Lord for that-especially Auntie Vee.
Vee, Once again you've given us not only a beautiful story but plenty to think about. Not all family get togethers are as pleasant as yours. I, too, was given the carcass to take home, and I don't mind. I love to cook up a good turkey soup, which takes two days to make. Don't eat much meat any more, but I enjoy the turkey soup making. You are a beautiful person, and I'm thankful you stayed on the list treating us to your words. You remain in my prayers.
