    1. Henry Chellman
    2. LEHAMPTON
    3. Hello Listers--I am seeking information about my maternal grandmother's first husband, Henry Chellman. They were married in Niagara County NY abt. 1908. He worked for the Niagara Power Company on the turbines. He died in a turbine accident just about a year after they married. The pictures that we have show him with a uniform(military) with the number "42" on the collar. They are also shown in many pictures with his family with a large estate--Hewitt Estate is written on one picture-in the background. I have no idea where he is buried and whether there is any family left, although, there are two young women besides my grandmother in some of the pictures so I am guessing that they are his sisters. I have many family pictures and would love to share them with descendants of the rest of the family. Anyone who can help would be appreciated. My grandmother's maiden name was Amalia(Mollie) Ernestine Fehrmann. Linda Hampton

    2. Tim Lowrey
    3. Hi Niagara listers, I have run into a problem obtaining a copy of a death certificate for a cousin of my grandmother's who died in Niagara Falls, NY 1962. I phoned the office of the City Clerk before I sent in my inquiry (and money order), and thought I understood the procedure. However, this week my letter was returned stating that I had to present proof my identity, and proof of my relationship to this individual. My purpose in obtaining this document was not to violate a family's privacy, but to obtain genealogical information only. Can someone explain to me just who is entitled to documents in Niagara County? Also, is there anyway I can obtain an abbreviated version of this document, one that does not violate privacy restrictions. Thanks, Tim

    1. The Report of My Death Was Exagerated
    2. Vee L. Housman
    3. Dear Group, I've been wanting to tell this story ever since it happened but I promised Cora I wouldn't tell a soul. So promise me that you won't let her know that I told it! You may recall back in August when I was still in the hospital recovering from mastectomy surgery, that my niece Deb's grandmother Bea died just a couple of days before I was released to go home. Deb was devastated over Bea's death and she was also very concerned about getting me transported back home. But a friend of mine got me back home nice and easy and I was able to go to Grandma Bea's viewing a couple of days later. Our family was dealing with all of it as well as could be expected. But the day after the funeral something bizarre happened. My dear friend, 97-year-old Cora, was concerned about me and wanted to know how I was recuperating from surgery. She didn't want to bother me at home and so she called Deb's house to ask about me. My young grand niece answered the phone and when Cora told her that she wanted to know how Vee was doing, Amanda recognized the old age tone of her voice, assumed that it was another old lady's phone call about Grandma Bea and automatically replied to her, "she died!' Well, apparently Cora went into shock right then and there! It was more than she could handle. She immediately called her neighbors Dorothy and Jane and told them the shocking news-I HAD DIED!!! They in turn went into shock, got into the car and drove right over to Deb's house along with Dorothy's little poodle. They were both almost hysterical and Jane jumped out of the car and tried to pry some information out of Amanda about what had happened to me. Amanda got a bit confused and went inside and told her mother, Deb, about the two strange hysterical women outside with the yapping poodle who were so upset about Grandma's death. Deb went outside, calmly explained the fine details of Grandma Bea's last hours-Deb was with her at the time in Bea's apartment-and when she described the details of her death, Jane started to put two and two together. She said, "Wait a minute, are we talking about the same person?" Deb then let her know that she was talking about Bea and Jane let her know that she was asking about Vee! At that very moment Jane then shouted back to Dorothy, "Vee's still ALIVE!!" Oh how excited they both were but then within an instant they realized that Cora wasn't aware of the mixup and that Cora was probably on the phone at that very moment letting the whole town know of my sudden unexpected death! Jane dashed back to the car and drove frantically over to Cora's house. She didn't even bother to knock on the door but burst in and found Cora on the phone. Jane asked her who she was talking to and Cora said she was talking with Bernetta. Jane sternly told her to just hang up there and then. Cora did. Now, I knew nothing about this until later when my phone rang. I was calmly sitting in my chair, I answered the phone and when Cora heard my voice, I swear she almost burst into tears! She said, "Is it really YOU?" Well, now, Cora has never been an emotional person and I was really puzzled. But Cora eventually was able to explain to me about her concern about me and how shocked she was when she was informed that I had died. I was really touched. A bit afterwards, Dorothy, Jane and I had a giggly conversation over the whole misunderstanding. It was really hilarious! But in thinking about it now, just as I did then, it sure was nice to know just how shocked the local townspeople would be if I suddenly died and how concerned they would have been. It told me that if I had died, I would have been missed. A body doesn't get such an opportunity as that while they're still alive! vee

In a message dated 12/3/2000 3:01:19 PM Eastern Standard Time, housman@adelphia.net writes: > Regarding the Joseph and Ezra Holden that showed up on the 1850 census of > Vee - Thank you for the clarification above. It would seem that they are not connected to the J.W. (J.M.?) Holden in Hartland in 1820. I wish I could link Augustus to Justinian, Richard or Randall, but as time goes by I'm more inclined to think he was descended from a later migration. Too many Holdens! I thought at one time there was an affinity for naming children after Roman Emperors, but I found two Augustuses in Richard's line (b. 1822 New Salem MA and also 1822 Shirley MA) and none in Justinian's. I think it now more likely that for a short time Augustus was a popular name. Maybe an early novel? Or universal education with classical history? I too have inspected the two-volume Holden book and found nothing, but that was before I found his birth date and birthplace. When I look at it again I'll have a better shot at finding something. By the way, the Justiinian-Joseph-Abner-Ezra line also links to the Holdens of Hartwick, Otsego County, if memory serves me rightly. Another dead end for my search, but maybe helpful for someone else. Thanks again for your helpful reply. At least it eliminated a wrong turn and hours of fruitless searching. Fred

    2. Vee L. Housman
    3. Dear Fred, Regarding the Joseph and Ezra Holden that showed up on the 1850 census of Town of Porter, Ezra (born 1810) was the brother of Joseph (born 1800.) However, I have a few pages out of The Holden Genealogy, compiled by Eben Putnam for the family of Mr. L. E. Holden, Boston, 1926, which indicates that their ancestors went back to Justinian, to Joseph, to Abner, to Ezra. From the pages that I have there is no mention of an Augustus (1821). (Note: I wonder if "Augustus" could have originally been "Justinian." The reason I mention that is because of our local Clapsaddle family. "Dennis" was originally "Augustinius." Just a thought.) They came from the area of Westminster, MA, and married into several of the early families of Youngstown. According to the book Joseph and his father moved to Chesterfield, NH, stayed there until 1841 and then came to Youngstown by way of Lockport. From the pages that I do have from the Holden book, it doesn't surprise me that a number of the Holden descendants went further west to Michigan, Wisconsin, and other points west. Regarding the Holland Land Company records, although I haven't seen the actual ones on microfilm, I have the feeling that they contain only a precise description of the parcel of land, the name of the purchaser and the amount contracted for. Good luck Fred in you family research. vee ----- Original Message ----- From: <LAPIN12@aol.com> To: <NYNIAGAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 02, 2000 8:29 PM Subject: Holden of Hartland > Niagara Listers: > I have recently found that my Ggrandfather Augustus Holden was born in > Hartland on Sep 3 1821. 1. Holden of Hartland
    2. Niagara Listers: I have recently found that my Ggrandfather Augustus Holden was born in Hartland on Sep 3 1821. He had migrated by 1849 to Genesee County, MI, where he spent the next 40 years. Along the way, he married (9/15/1844) Caroline Matilda Bullock of East Worcester, Otsego County NY. I have tried to link Augustus to some earlier Holdens, so far with little success other than to find, in Hartland in 1820, J.W. Holden (listed in census index as J.M.). J.W.'s household includes a male child under 10, one male 18-26, one to 45, and two adult females 16-26. I presume this to be Augustus' family. There is also a James Holden in 1820 in Clarence. No Holdens appear in the 1830 census in Hartland, but an Alvah lives in Lockport. By 1850, there are Joseph Holden, age 49, Cooper and Ezra Holden, age 34, Farmer, in the town of Porter (who could fit the two younger males of 1820 Hartland). Does someone out there know anything about these various Holdens? Do the Holland-America Land Company records give places of origin of the land purchasers? Thank you for your consideration. 1. The House Down the Road
    2. Vee L. Housman
    3. Dear Group, This evening I glanced out of my side window and I noticed the bright Christmas lights on somebody's house down the road. Well 'tis the season, but when I noticed them the second time, I realized that something was different around here. Over the years that I've lived here, I've noticed that some of my neighbors down Creek Road have always decorated their houses beautifully for the holidays, but not that particular house. That's when I realized it was Emma Shaw's house! Oh my, dear old Emma! You see, I've known Emma for a number of years and I know that she went through an awful time caring for her husband during his long lingering illness until he died a couple of years ago. I knew that she was wrung out with exhaustion. But more recently, I noticed that their lawn has been well maintained, the flower garden cared for and expanded, the long driveway black topped, the house spruced up with paint and that it looked prettier than I've ever seen it before. Well, this evening I just had to call Emma to let her know how heart warming it was to see such bright Christmas lights on her house. It pleased her but she corrected me and told me that they were on her milk shed, not the house. You see, we live in the country and Emma and her husband Fay Shaw farmed their acreage for about 50 years. And in addition to the milk shed there is the smoke house, the barn, the chicken coop and heaven only knows what other outbuildings. Of course it hasn't been farmed in years, but everything is still there and it's obvious that somebody is taking care of it. I questioned Emma about it and she said that her granddaughter is living with her now and it was Wendy who was putting so much time, effort and money into its upkeep. Wendy hopes to eventually buy it some day. She's the only child or grandchild who is interested in the property and it sounds like Wendy is determined to renovate the old house and property. I questioned Emma about the house and she said it was built in 1860. Yes, I can believe that. It had been built or at least owned by John Kelley who came to Town of Porter prior to 1850. John was always called Captain Kelley. Not because of any military service, but because he was the captain of a steamer on the Great Lakes. And do you know what? Captain Kelley's great-granddaughter still lives here in Youngstown. Emma and I had such a nice phone conversation and when I timidly asked her how old she is, she said that she will be 85 on Christmas day if she lives that long! No, Emma isn't ill, it's just that her two great-grandchildren today have been running her up the wall ever since they got off the school bus today. They're 7 and 9 and . . . well, you get the picture! Another thing that Emma told me was that her husband's ashes have been scattered over their land and I have the feeling that there will be a time when Emma's ashes will join his. Isn't it nice that they have a granddaughter who has been taking care of her grandmother and sprucing up the old farm at the same time? From where I sit tonight, those Christmas lights on the old milk shed just get brighter and brighter. vee
