    1. Christmas Music
    2. Vee, I enjoyed the happenings in you town. It reminded me of something I learned, at a funeral I attended last summer. The 3 adult sons stood up and reflected on events in their father's life. It was very person and informative. This man, every Christmas season, would wear one red and one green sock. He sang in the choir and of course you could see his socks as he went up into the choir loff. He was buried in these socks. :-) These adult sons remembered, as far back as they could, that every Christmas morning, their father would set a loud speaker on the front porch (they lived in town) and played Christmas carols for everybody to hear that morning. 3. Dear Group, I was sitting here at my computer just now and heard Christmas music slowly coming down Creek Road out here in the country. And it got closer and closer. I kept looking out of my office window toward the road and then I could see the glow of flashing red lights. As they slowly got closer, they got brighter and brighter and then I saw it!! It was our village of Youngstown fire engine covered all over in Christmas lights with a great big Santa Claus on the side!! It was playing Christmas carols and it was manned by members of our volunteer fire company. What a heart warming sight! I knew that it was going all around the streets and roads of the western part of the Town of Porter to treat everybody to a Christmas present from them. Wow, it sure is great to be living in a small community! Keep the holiday spirit,

    3. Glenda Subyak has given me permission to forward these Niagara County newspaper items --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: GSubyak@aol.com Rochester, Monroe, N. Y. Democrat & Chronicle July 9, 1892 NIAGARA S. S. DICKERSON has been appointed clerk of the Lockport excise board, in place of Charles M. SOUTHWORTH. As was expected, death has come to the relief of Fred N. BABCOCK, of Lockport, who suffered a stroke of paralysis Thursday morning. He died at 3:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Although but 21 years of age his death will be mourned by a very large circle of friends from whom he had, during his short life won their highest esteem. A father and mother, together with one sister and brother survive him. The 5-year-old son of Joseph WINKLEMAN of Lockport was run over by a switch engine near Green street at Lockport yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. The little fellow was knocked between the rails and two cars passed over him. Fortunately a low brake was the only thing that harmed him and that broke his arm and also made quite a scalp wound. It was a very narrow escape. No blame is attached to the railroad. Deputy United States Marshall WEAVER has arrested Captain Luron D. WILSON of Lockport on the charge of defrauding the government by helping one James S. LAIRD to obtain a pension unlawfully. It is said that LAIRD has skipped out and cannot be found. It is thought that the evidence against WILSON will not be sufficient to hold him. He had an examination before United States Commissioner POUND yesterday afternoon and was released on his own recognizance. ***************** NIAGARA'S DEAD Lewiston, N. Y., July 8 — The body of an unknown man with a bullet in his head was found in the Niagara river at Youngstown yesterday. 3. Posted on: Niagara Co. NY Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/NY/Niagara/394 Surname: Bates, Tempel ------------------------- Help, I am dead-ended. My gggrandfather, Nathan Bates is on the 1820 Federal Census in the Township of Hartland, Niagara Co., NY. He was born somewhere in Vermont in 1796. His wife, Charity Tempel, was born somewhere in NY in 1801/02. I don't know when they married, but they had their first child, Edward Stubbs Bates, circa 1823 in Tonawanda, NY. At least that is what Edward claims in a newspaper interview around 1900. The family moved to Wayne, Steuben Co., NY before the 1825 NY Census, because they are on that census in Steuben Co. The family grew by at least 6 more children, and then they moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1853. (Actually Edward and another brother went about five years sooner) I cannot find any trace of Nathan or Charity dying and being buried in Michigan. One family story has Nathan returning to NY to care for an ailing mother. Charity was in Michigan until at least December 1864. Could Nathan have died in NY? And was he buried there somewhere? After Charity died, was she moved to NY to be buried with her husband? Are they both resting next to Nathan's mother somewhere? I'm hoping that the answer to these questions will lead me to Nathan's and Charity's parents somewhere. I am also interested in Edward's middle name of Stubbs. Does that ring a bell with anyone? Any help with any of the above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. Les Bates

    3. I have recently found out that I have more family in Niagara Co, that I thought. I knew my Taylor's had moved to Niagara Falls about 1918, I did not know the Freeman's had followed or could have already been here and didn't know the Harvey connection. My Taylor's that I know of that moved to Niagara Falls are: George and Elizabeth Taylor. The Freeman's are John T Freeman m. Elizabeth James Freeman, at this time I do not know who John's parents are, I suspect. I know he died in 1965. I didn't find his obit the last time I went to the library. Mary Harvey died July 28, 1964 I suspect that John T. Freeman and Mary were brother and sister. Mary's husband was Charles and he died in 1923. Any one else researching these families?
