Dear Group, This evening when I was talking on the phone with my niece Deb she let me know that she had the usual Friday night bunch of kids at her house-her daughter Amanda's friends. Speaking of Amanda, Deb then put her on the phone to explain to me why she had to go somewhere in particular next Wednesday (not a "happy place") and after only a few disapproving words from me, Amanda and I exchanged a few laughs. She gave the phone back to her mother Deb and we talked about Amanda and her newest boyfriend Andrew. Note: I had to be brought up to date that Amanda has gone through two other boyfriends since Christmas! But then, hey, she's 15 years old! Well the next thing I knew, Deb told me that she was bringing them all over to my house in a couple of minutes! What? Oh well, I just turned the outside light on, unlocked the side door and in a couple of minutes Deb came in followed by three 15-year-olds that I had never met. Following them were Amanda and a boy that I had never met. Amanda introduced all of them to me--there was Andrew and Holly and Karen and Matt. They were definitely polite but Amanda, the instigator, got them into their usual silly mood and so, me Auntie Vee, gave them tit for tat in response to the outrageous things they were saying to each other. I do declare, they appeared to be a bit shocked! :-) Deb spied the large empty cardboard cartons in my kitchen and knew that they were the boxes my brand new computer came in today. When the kids--especially the boys--heard that I had a new computer they wanted to see it, so all of them took their sneakers off--there's snow on the ground, you know--and traipsed into my computer room. Andrew immediately sat down in my computer chair and started asking questions. I told him it has a speed of 886 MHz and 128 RAM. Both boys were impressed and one of them made the comment, "Hey, she really knows computers." I guess they were surprised that a little old lady knew about such stuff. They spotted the Dell brand name, they spotted a window that was open on the screen that showed I had MusicMatch Jukebox and they spotted my internal CD-Rom DVD/R/RW drive. They were REALLY impressed! Matt picked up the "Getting Started" instruction sheet that I still had on my desk and checked out what ports and connections the CPU could accommodate. I had told them I'm connected to the Web and email by a cable connection but that I didn't think my new computer had the connection port to accommodate it. He pointed out that all I need is an adapter for the telephone jack and that should do it. Now whether he's right or not, I gave him a big hug anyway. Hey, if you want help with your computer, just talk to any 15-year-old kid! When the six of them were piling back out the door, one of them said to another, "You know, she's real cool!" Deb smiled at me when she heard the comment and I just said to her, "They don't even know just how cool I REALLY am, do they?" Deb smiled in agreement! Hey, when ya got it, ya got it! Especially when you're 69 years old and your sister's youngest granddaughter and her friends let you know it! (tee hee!) vee

I was encouraged by Diana's post to see if anyone on the list ever heard of my connections in Niagara Co.! My father, Charles "Bill" Leonard (1908-53), was from an old Olcott family. He had a sister Betty who was a nurse, his father Grover Cleveland Leonard ran a grocery store with his brother Arthur Dewitt Leonard, Leonard Bros. (later called Leonard & Hamminga). Arthur had one daughter, Althea Leonard Halstead (Mrs. Elwood) who taught music. Grover and Arthur also had a sister Mina, who married Fred Miller of Buffalo and had a daughter, I believe her name was Helen; and a brother, Leon, who I believe worked in a garage and had a son William/Bill. Dad's mother's family were the Meyerses, they lived in Buffalo and I believe in Lockport. Irene Meyers was the daughter of Charles Meyers and Emma Jane Ball. The Meyerses were German. I believe Emma Ball had several brothers whom I was told ran a hotel either in Lockport or Olcott. If anyone has any info on these folks, please drop me a line! -- I am sailing to Athens... Hello Listers, I am still searching for information on my PRINDLE line from Lockport, New York. Charles B. PRINDLE was born in 1835 and was my great great grandfather, I do not have any other information about his family in Lockport. He was found later in Kane County, ILLinois and married there in 1858 to a Maryette HAMMOND. Charles was in the Civil War from 1881 to 1883 when he died of typhoid fever. I have reason to believe he and his family were farmers in Lockport, but not sure. Would appreciate any information pertaining to PRINDLE of Lockport. Are there any PRINDLE`s in Lockport or surrounding area now? Appreciate your help with this. Pat ~~ Autumdeer2@aol.com

hello. I have a few quick questions on Lockport. Does anyone have a directory or such of Lockport from around 1860 give or take 5 years that they could look up a Joseph GORVETT, age 58, blacksmith? He was on the 1860 census with 2 children and a "domestic". His 20 yr old and he were both born Canada and daughter born New York. I don't find my Gorvetts in Canada (PEI and ONT) until 1840 or so. Does anyone know what Lockport federal census would be for 1850? I am not having much luck thru LDS and would like to look at it. I have found the state listings which I also hope to order. Thanks so much in advance Betsy Rubel, Chicago beharu@mediaone.net

Dear Group, This evening I couldn't resist reading over other simple stories that I wrote in school and this was one that I wrote when I was about 16 years old (ca 1946). It was that time in my life when I didn't know which I was crazier about--horses or boys! Summer Saturdays Most of my Saturdays in the summer were spent horseback riding on Grand Island. My three girlfriends Marilyn, Ann, Margaret and I met at the Grand Island bridge one Saturday (not any Saturday in particular, but just a day in the summer) and went over to "Way-Bak-Ranch" together. Way-Bak-Ranch is in reality just a farm with a stable of riding horses. Upon arriving, we called to Mr. Walters, who everyone calls Howard, to let him know that we were there. He greeted us with something like "Hiya kids! Glad to see you" and after settling the matter about who should take what horse, we started off on trail. Feeling that we would like something different to do, we decided to go exploring. After going through fields, woods and swamps for a considerable length of time, we started back. We raced the horses a bit then slowed down to a walk for the last ten minutes. When we got back, we unbridled and unsaddled the horses and brushed them good. It was about 12:00 by then so we took our lunches that we had packed, up into the hay loft and sat up there for an hour or so eating, talking and playing around in the hay. It was during this time of the summer that Howard harvested his oats, so the four of us shocked oats while Howard cut and bound the oats. By the time we were finished in the fields, it was about 3:30 so Howard let us have the horses for an hour to repay us for the help. We went out on trail for an hour and came back promptly at 4:30. We played around the barn for a while when we got back and at 5:00 we left. We arrived home around 6:00 and you can well imagine that we had enough exercise for THAT day. [Vee's note here: I have the feeling that 16-year-old kids now adays pay more than $.50 an hour to ride horses. But by the same token, that was less than the hourly wage that we girls were paid to shock oats out in the fields. My skin still itches from thinking about it! Did YOU ever shock oats?] Gee to be 16 again!! vee
