    1. Our Munchkin passed away
    2. Vee Housman
    3. Dear Group, In this morning's Niagara Gazette I got a shock when I read the obituary page. I read that Thomas J. Cottonaro, 86 years old, of Ashland Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY, died Wednesday, February 7, in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center after a year long illness. Who was Tommy Cottonaro? He was our very special Munchkin and was known around here as the Mayor of Munchkin Land. Why? Well because he had been a film actor and was one of the Munchkins in the original 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz. Actually he was the Bearded Man of the Munchkins. He was the last surviving Munchkins of the Wizard of Oz. I had seen Tommy around town over the years but I especially remember him when he was the manager and maitre de at Hardings Restaurant here in Youngstown in the 1970s. He was such a charming gentleman and was modest along with it. What I didn't know was that he was born in Castrogiovanni, Italy, had come to Buffalo as an infant and graduated from Buffalo Technical High School and Cornell University Food Service School. And aside from the number of movies he acted in from 1939 to 1955-the Gazette reported that he had actually played the part of Cheetah in a Tarzan movie!-most of his life revolved around the restaurant business. He met his wife of 45 years while filming a TV pilot in California and since then it seems that his remaining life was devoted to the food service business in this area. He was loved around here and in 1991 the Niagara Falls City Council officially declared May 1 as "Tommy Cottonaro Day" in the city. I was especially touched by what his wife Elizabeth (Billingsley) Cottonaro said about him, "I can't say enough about all the things he taught me. It was a wonderful, wonderful life." We'll all miss our Munchkin. (sigh!) vee

    3. Dear Judy AND Carol, Wow, what a list of 1922 graduates! I can only assume that the Harry Abate that graduated that year is the Harry F. Abate that the elementary school in Niagara Falls is named after. And the Willard Belden that also graduated that year is Willard, Sr., the father of my classmate Willard, Jr. (Binx) Belden. They're the Beldens of Belden Real Estate and Binx is also a now-retired attorney. Regarding Hertha Kinghorn of Youngstown, I know that I have old newspaper articles regarding her engagement and marriage. Her father was a blacksmith. Ransom Rice was the father of my classmate Ransom/Randy Rice. BTW, Binxie Belden married Randy's sister!! In looking over all the surnames of those graduates of 1922, I spotted so many family names that still live on in this area. Thanks to both Judy and Carol for putting that list on line--AND thanks for those BEAUTIFUL old pictures of Niagara Falls High School. They're an absolute treasure! The beautiful building still stands but we're afraid it will be torn down in the near future. If it's demolished, it will be an absolute sin. vee ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith Baillargeon" <jabaill@qwest.net> To: <NYNIAGAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2001 4:46 PM Subject: Niagara Falls High School > Hi, > I recently put a list of graduates from Niagara Falls High School > (1922,1923,1924,1925,1926) on my Genealogy Web Page. 3. Seeing Judy's post about Niagara Falls high school I thought I would ask if anyone has any information on the high school(s) in Olcott or in Newfane if there was not one in Olcott in the late 1920s. My father was born in 1908 so would have graduated from high school around 1926 or so. His name was Charles Jackson "Bill" Leonard, his parents were Grover and Irene Leonard of Olcott. Any info would be much appreciated! Chris in CA -- The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is NOW. ~folk saying
