Thanks Mark for suggesting buying the sliced roast beef and making your own beef on weck. It reminded me that our local Tops Supermarket Deli section sells sliced roast beef at $6.99 a pound (I just checked--If you buy 5 lbs the price goes down to 5.99/lb) and they include a container of "au jou" with it. Then just stop by their bakery and pick up some kummelweck rolls to go along with it. Slice the rolls in half and dip the cut side into the au jou before adding the beef. Warm it up in the microwave and then slather it with enough horseradish to bring tears to your eyes! GOLLLLLLLYY! That's good eatins! vee ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rustay" <brustay@rochester.rr.com> To: <NYNIAGAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 13, 2001 8:16 AM Subject: Beef on Weck > For those of you far from home and others that wish to indulge, Weck rolls are easy to replicate. Can't seem to get my subscriptions straight with my email changes so I'll try to post again. I am so jealous, I spent a week and a half back in Niagara Falls in the Fall and forgot to look for a place to have Beef on Weck. I guess my mind was concentrating on cemeteries and records. I live in Tucson, Az and have found one place that has the rolls, but just with regular salt, not the large crystals; its just not the same. I guess this is an appeal to anyone in AZ who knows where to get the real thing. Also, I graduated from LaSalle in 1963 and no longer know a soul in Niagara Falls. Left for AZ in 1965 and never looked back; that is until recently. So while it was interesting going around town, I felt more like a tourist than anything else. I guess I am having a bad nostalgia attack. My favorite thing at Greenwalds were the hamburgers and a milkshake. I can still see that swordfish on the wall. "Everything to make 6 generous beef-on-wecks. Each combo includes: 1 1/2 pound cooked roast beef, gravy, 6 Kümmelwicks and 5 oz. of our own horseradish." Here I am out in Arizona and you are talking about beef-on-weck and I know I can't find any here. Schwabels is the best but Anderson's is comes in second. When our son flies into the Buffalo airport we have to detour to West Seneca for a weck before we can head to Lewiston. All you Western New Yorkers enjoy it. I'll be back in May to partake of that delicious treat. Barbara Moll

Hi, Group! It's 7:35 AM and I'm salivating for beef on weck! For a quick one, I agree that Anderson's makes very good ones. Of course being in Wilson, I think Lockport's is best (even if it is a local chain out of Buffalo). Wagner's in Lockport has been famous for theirs for many years. And isn't too far West of the court house and historical society! They also supply beer, which is almost a must with a weck. I looked up the Troy Pub site and feel that I am obligated to warn all of you out-of-towners that a REAL weck is NOT a kaiser roll without the salt and seeds. The topping is a MUST. Also, diehard fans only use hot horseradish not horseradish sauce (you know the creamy stuff). I'm sorry to warn you that sometimes, even restaurants around here, will try to pass off plain kaiser rolls and that creamy stuff. Please be warned. Once you eat a true Beef-on-Weck, you will understand why so many natives are expected to carry a bag or two of rolls to other parts of the country, when they visit relatives. And just in case you are a Ruben fan, Brennan's in Youngstown makes the best! Good eating when you get here! Ellen Colangelo Wilson, NY PS We don't eat "Buffalo Wings" in this area of the country, only "outsiders" do. We eat "Wings". Most people devour them with bleu cheese; but if you are allergic to the cheese like I am, honey mustard or plain mustard tastes pretty good, too. But nothing beats a tender, salty, seedy Beef-on-Weck.....
Chris and Group, I'm delighted with the response you received about Beef on Weck. I've been "back home" here for over 25 years but I'll tell you, you have to REALLY know where they serve the BEST Beef on Weck. My vote goes to Schwabels(?) down/up in Erie County somewhere. You have to stand in line to order your own special sandwich, but when you approach the HUGE roast of beef that the man is standing behind, you know that you can order it just the way you want the beef--rare, medium rare, medium or well done. He smiles at you and then starts carving away, layer after thin layer until it's piled up high on the kummelweck roll. It's to DIE for! When Carol and Bill and I were doing lunch yesterday, I asked our waitress Jackie if she knew where the best place was around Niagara Falls to go for beef on weck. She had to think about it a bit (note: it WASN'T D.J.s!) :-) but she came up with the name of a place--Anderson's on Niagara Falls Blvd. near 82nd St. But here's the thing of it. Anderson's is more like a roadside icecream place, not a restaurant. In fact their motto is "Building Memories, Cone by Cone." But, hey, if Jackie says they have the best beef on weck, you can betcha that I'm gonna take her word for it. Trust me, I have my eye on Anderson's! vee ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Leonard" <cleonardca@earthlink.net> To: <NYNIAGAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 11, 2001 11:05 PM Subject: Re: Beef on Weck > wow, i have gotten letters from former Niagara County area folks all over > the country who are pining for Beef on Wecks! > > when i make my genealogy trip to Olcott, having one of these sandwiches will > be at the top of my list of things to do! > > i even found a restaurant in Lockport that has a web page and advertises > Beef on Weck...wonder if they could ship one UPS overnight to me in > California in one of those little beer cooler gadgets... > > > ==== NYNIAGAR Mailing List ==== > Were your ancestors in Niagara County by 1860? Vee wrote, > I've been > "back home" here for over 25 years but I'll tell you, you have to REALLY > know where they serve the BEST Beef on Weck. My vote goes to Schwabels(?) > down/up in Erie County somewhere. from the web: he real reason to head to the western New York State area is "the best roast beef sandwich in America" - Beef on Weck, a specialty of Buffalo taverns for years. Slices of juicy, rare roast beef and freshly grated horseradish are piled high on "kummelweck," an unusual hard roll crusted with pretzel salt and caraway. Beef on Weck is serious stuff in Buffalo. To check it out for yourself go to Schwabl's, a 150-year-old family business, or Charlie the Butcher's Kitchen near the Buffalo airport. Schwabl's 789 Center Road West Seneca (Buffalo), NY 716-674-9821
I am from Arkansas My husband grew up in Lockport NY. In visiting relatives in Lockport NY I have had, maybe, 5 Beef on Wecks in my life. Of course with a COLD beer, or two or three...... and the thought of a Beef on Weck makes me quiver with desire!!!!!! Ha Patty

wow, i have gotten letters from former Niagara County area folks all over the country who are pining for Beef on Wecks! when i make my genealogy trip to Olcott, having one of these sandwiches will be at the top of my list of things to do! i even found a restaurant in Lockport that has a web page and advertises Beef on Weck...wonder if they could ship one UPS overnight to me in California in one of those little beer cooler gadgets...

Chris, and all, You haven't lived until you have had Beef on Weck... A favorite in Western New York! Lusious hot roast beef, sliced thin and piled high on a kummelweck roll. "weck" roll, that being a a hard roll, that has pretzel salt and caraway seeds on top. A different taste to be sure. Vee will surely know the origin of the sandwich. It is not yet 9 am here in Western New York and now my mouth waters for a good beef on weck. Dear Group, I had a very special lunch today with Carol (Greenwald) and Bill Scouler from Niagara Falls who now live in Massachusetts. They're members of our list and over the past year or so Carol and I have exchanged memories of Mr. Atkinson's Dancing Class and other such old memories of Niagara Falls, and I have done a bit of local research on her Greenwald family from LaSalle (you know, Greenwald's Hotdog stand! The best hotdogs ever!!) Well, today was the day that we finally got to meet each other. We agreed to meet at D.J.'s Restaurant on Main Street in Youngstown at precisely 12:30 p.m. I made certain I got there a few minutes early and I waited in my car in front of the restaurant for them to show up. Shortly thereafter, a car with a man and women in it parked nearby and I just knew it must be them. I got out of my car and waved to them. They waved back and got out of the car. However, comma, another car pulled up just then and parked and I noticed that it had Massachusetts license plates on it-AND it had a man and woman in it! Whoops, I had waved at the wrong couple! Carol and Bill got out of their Massachusetts car and I got a chance to finally hug both of them. We headed for D.J.'s and so did the other couple. I apologized to the other couple and let them know that I really didn't know them-it had been my mistake. However, the woman corrected me! Hey, Vee, it 's me Doreen Roth from High School! Oh MY GAWD, DOREEN!! And there I stood with my Niagara Falls High School Class of 1949 yearbook in hand to show Carol and Bill-and there was Doreen whose picture was in it!! The four of us entered D.J.'s, I introduced Doreen to Carol and Bill, and then Doreen and I babbled a bit about how exciting our 50th class reunion had been. She asked me if I had seen the pictures that had been taken of me when I was the "Ginger Rogers" of the dance floor that evening and when I told her that I hadn't seen a one, she promised she would mail them to me. Oh my, what an evening that was! Carol, Bill and I then sat down in the coziest section of the little restaurant-the smoking section. It had a lovely view of the Niagara River and even though there weren't any sailboats moored out in the river, it was the best scenery that I could scrape up at this time of year for them. All three of us promptly ordered Beef on 'Weck and then Bill dove into my yearbook. He had graduated in 1951 but he knew that he would know some of the kids in it. Oh boy, did he ever! Not only that but Carol had dated some of the guys in the yearbook and between the three of us, we had a great old time talking about mutual acquaintances and teachers-especially our Physics teacher, Mark R. Bedford! In addition, there was a couple "our age" sitting at the table next to us who was thoroughly enjoying our conversation and a lot of laughs were exchanged between our two tables. They were total strangers but by the time they left, we all exchanged warm goodbyes. Carol and Bill and I sat at the table long after we had finished our lunch. All three of us talked about Jack Viele who all of us had known-both Carol and I had responded to the query about him that showed up on the list-and, well we just talked and talked as if we had known each other forever. And so there you have it. Just a Saturday lunch at D.J.'s in Youngstown overlooking the Niagara River with two people I had never met. Now why do I get the feeling that it was something beyond just an "ordinary" lunch?? :-) vee
