1. [NYNIAGAR] Ukrainian community in Niagara Falls/ Buffalo early 1900s & Canada entrance
    2. Does anyone know of a source addressing the community of Ukrainians who settled in the Niagara Falls - Buffalo area? My grandfather, Gregory (Harry) Sydorowicz died in Niagara Falls in 1917 at age 48. He had married my grandmother, Kataryna Nima, in Allentown, PA in 1913 and then moved the family (they were both widowed with children) to Niagara Falls. Although we have not found the "link", I'm assuming that he had family there and went in search of better work. There are, today, Sydorowiczs in that area as there are many other Ukrainian surnames. Gregory is buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Lewiston, NY where we have recently placed a monument on his previously unmarked grave. His burial certificate was issued through Holy Trinity Church in Niagara Falls, NY, but the family is not listed as members there. We have searched records there and at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church in Buffalo. I've not seen any reference to a Ruthenian church there, but that is the religion listed on the ship manifests.I cannot find Gregory in the Ellis Island files, so perhaps he came through Canada; there are many Sydorowiczs on the Canadian side of the border. Any ideas? Thanks, Phyllis Reimer

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Jamie, In checking again in our Niagara Falls 2006 Telephone Book I counted 25 names. One is a law firm and one lives just down the road from us. I called him and he is not part of the family you are looking for. So that would decrease your letter writing to 23. Contact me off list if I can help you further. 3. I recently found that my ancestors Noah Cooley and wife Jane Sutherland died in "Lockport" (could be the town or the city). Noah died in 1852 and Jane in 1854. They settled on Holland Purchase land near present-day Molyneaux Corners (which would have placed them in Cambria) in 1815. A search for indexed cemeteries in Niagara county comes up pretty empty. Many of the Sutherlands are buried in the Sutherland/Castlemaine plot in Glenwood Cemetery. Does anybody know about the cemeteries in the Lockport-Cambria area. I would like to find the Cooleys. I thought you might be gracious enough to give me some much needed help of locating my husband's grandfather's gravesite even though I'm sure you're very busy with your cataloging. I have managed to trace my husband's roots back to the 18th century in Stalham, Norfolk, England. We have verified from census records that his grandfather, John B. Gaze was born to John E. Gaze and Lillie May Oderkirk about 1889 in Ridgeway, Orleans County. But John B. Gaze no longer appears in the 1920 census, so we are unsure if he died or just moved out of the area. We were able to find all ten of John B.'s siblings as well as both of his parents buried in West Ridgeway Cemetery in Orleans County. But, as yet cannot find a gravestone for John B. Gaze, my husband's grandfather. Under the assumption that he may have lived close to the Barker area (where he was married to my husband's grandmother in 1911), we are thinking that his gravesite might possibly be somewhere in the Barker or Somerset area. Most of my ancestral research is done online since we live in Florida now. We are hoping to make a trip up to western NY this summer, but just don't know where to begin o! ur search for this missing "Gaze" gravestone. Have you come across any Gazes in your cataloging in Niagara County? We are already certain of only four Gaze interments that would be buried in Niagara County. If someone would take the time to do a lookup for John B. Gaze born about 1889, I would be forever grateful.
