Surname: WHYBRA Rochester, Monroe, NY Democrat & Chronicle Tue Sept 8, 1903 INTO NIAGARA MAELSTROM Man Jumps From Lower Steel Arch Bridge One Hundred Feet to River. Niagara Falls, Sept. 12 - Niagara Falls was started by another suicide this afternoon. This latest victim to Niagara's fascination did not elect the water route over the falls, but leaped from the lower or railway steel arch bridge to certain death in the wild waters of the whirlpool rapids. His name was John WHYBRA, a resident of this city, and man of family. He was a coachman in the employ of the Miller & Brundage Company. "He was passed upon the bridge shortly after 4 o'clock. None of the bridge attendants witnessed the suicide, the first news of which was given by a party of people who saw the awful drop while at the foot of the elevator between the two lower bridges. ----<>---- Find all the transcribed Monroe Co., NY Early News articles at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nymonnws/

    3. Thank you for your insight, Steve. I had never considered that before about being disillusioned. If this was indeed the case, my Patriot was further burned by the federal government by being denied a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War (I got the impression that he moved back to the U.S. (census records are unavailable to confirm this due to fires) about the time he applied for the pension, which may explain why he returned (maybe you had to live in the U.S. to claim a pension?). Thanks, again, to you and everyone else who took the time to assist me with this quandary. [email protected] wrote: The easy part of your question is why did they go to Canada. Immediately after the Revolutionary War, many veterans became somewhat disillusioned with the federal and state governments since promises made to them of land were not fulfilled. In some cases, speculators stepped in and virtually stole the land from the vets. One such man was Tobias Maybee of Dutchess County who had served several years during the war, and then in the mid-1790s he left with his young family and moved to Canada where he joined his cousin John Mabee, a Sussex County Loyalist who had moved to Canada in the 1780s. The second part of your question has a similar answer. At various points in time, some Loyalists (and others who had belatedly gone to Canada in search of land grants) who had removed to Canada at Wars end also became disillusioned (this time with the British) when promises of land went unfulfilled. Ultimately, Buffalo was a convenient point on the frontier, with access to the great lakes for migration to points west. Steve In a message dated 3/29/2007 1:57:59 P.M. 3. Thank you for your interesting insight! I thought there may be one clear answer, but you have pointed out many viable possibilities, all worth looking into....thanks! He was caught in the war of 1812, served as a Canadian and recieved land for such service. Later he crossed the river settled in New York and claimed a pension for his Revolutionary war service. It seems that at his capture he was kept by the indians and not handed over as a prisoner as the government did not have him listed as a live prisoner, and assumed he was dead. His war papers and fight for recognition are quite extensive. He became a double dipper. With the boarder being an imaginary line in some places and a river that was oftend cross in other places nationality was not of great concern. Making a lively hood was in first place. Other relatives lost land in what became the United States and fled to Canada because of their religion (Quaker). Some of this land was later returned. Land in lower Quebec was advertised to entice other Americans to come to Canada for land offers. Some of my wife's relatives responded to this. You can see there are a number of possibilities. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message --------------------------------- Food fight? 3. My dad worked there in that time frame and later also, but he is gone now. I think they did have a plant in Buffalo near where Western Electric and Williams Tool were located, as well as in NF. My dad was born 1896 and his pension from Bell after ~ten years of service was $25/mo. After being retired a while that was increased to $45/mo. Of course there were no survivor benefits for my mom. The investigation is being carried on by Sheriff Elton L. WILLE, Supervisor Raymond W. URIEL, chairman of the Health Board of the town of Lockport, with the co-operation of the Lockport police. The stream is adjacent to the farm of Supervisor URIEL who made the discovery and instigated proceedings to fix the responsibility. The bodies were found to be in varying stages of decomposition, leading authorities to believe they had been thrown in the creek different times throughout the winter. The aid of local police was enlisted to determine if any of the animals shot in this city were among those discovered, but it was found none of the animals met death in this way. The authorities believe that they were poisoned and the bodies dumped in the creek. Sheriff WILLE declared vigorous prosecution may follow leads now being investigated. The creek in which the bodies were found is used by several farmers to water their stock and it drains into another brook which has been stocked with trout by the State Conservation Commission. ----<>---- SIXTH INDIAN HELD IN THEFT OF TIRES Lockport, April 20 - Herman RICKARD, 20 years old, a Tuscarora Indian, was arrested to-day at LaSalle on a bench warrant issued by the district attorney's office here, and is in jail awaiting arraignment on an indictment charging burglary, third degree, and grand larceny. RICKARD is one of six Indians indicted by the April Grand Jury for the theft of several tires from the Mason garage, town of Lewiston on August 14th last. The arrest of the six Indians raises the question of the state's jurisdiction, and it has been cited that a Supreme Court decision in another case gave to the Federal courts the jurisdiction in a list of several offenses, among which is larceny.
